Same-sex accommodation

Local information

The recently revised operating framework for the NHS in England, 2010/11, published June 21 2010, states that "mixed-sex accommodation needs to be eliminated, except where it is clearly in the overall best interests of the patient", and that "guidance on capital schemes will be amended to improve the provision of single rooms and achieve better dignity and privacy for patients".

The Department of Health is working alongside its partner organisations, including strategic health authorities (SHAs) and primary care trusts (PCTs), to ensure that local services meet these requirements.

In the meantime, SHAs have recorded details of regional activity that took place in the last financial year. This is largely centred on local schemes which stem from use of the ‘Privacy and Dignity’ fund.
