1. What does Change4Life actually want parents to do?

We want parents and children to eat better and move more so that they have healthier futures. We need to influence them to make changes to their behaviours around food and physical activity.

We recognise that the behaviours we are asking people to change - how they shop, how they cook, how they eat, how they travel, how they play - are not easy. Families will need incentives to change and sustained support as they try to embed those changes in their lives. And that’s what Change4Life has been launched to do.

2. What are the key messages of Change4Life?

There are 8 healthy behaviours that we want to help families adopt. They are:

  1. Swapping food and drink with added sugar for options that are lower in sugar or sugar-free. We’re calling this ‘sugar swaps’.
  2. Making sure kids eat at least five portions of a variety of fruit and veg every day. We’re using the name that parents are already familiar with: 5 A DAY.
  3. Making time for regular meals to help avoid unhealthy eating habits. We’re calling this ‘meal time’.
  4. Setting a limit on the number of snacks and treats kids have each day. We’re calling this ‘snack check’.
  5. Making sure kids eat the right sized portions for their age and size. We’re calling this ‘me size meals’.
  6. Taking simple steps to eat less fat by comparing food labels, swapping certain foods for others and changing the way food is cooked and prepared. We’re calling this ‘cut back fat’.
  7. Making sure kids do at least 60 minutes of physical activity - like playing outside, walking or swimming - every day. We’re calling this ‘60 active minutes’.
  8. Limiting ‘sitting down’ activities, like watching TV or playing computer games, and encouraging kids to do something more active. We’re calling this ‘up and about’.

3. I’d like to be a part of Change4Life - how can I get involved?

We’re looking for trusted partners and supporters to promote Change4Life. These partners could be national commercial organisations, national non-government organisations (both classed as national partners) or individuals or local organisations (what we’re calling the ‘local supporters’). Change4Life branding, assets and tools have been developed for our partners to use to promote the campaign. To register as a national partner or local supporter go to the registration page.

4. I’m a national commercial organisation or national non-government organisation (national partner) - what do you want me to do?

We would like national partners to do two things:

  1. Align and extend their existing activities that relate to diet and fitness with Change4Life
  2. Create and add campaigns to support the key behaviours

In order to become a national partner and use the Change4Life brand assets and/or tools you must agree in writing to the campaign terms for national partners. For commerical partners, please complete the form below. For national non-government organisations please email the partnerships team at c4lpartnerships@dh.gsi.gov.uk

5. I’m a local individual or organisation (local supporter) - what do you want me to do?

For ideas and advice on how to talk about Change4Life please read the guide for local supporters . How you choose to get involved with Change4Life will be up to you - it will depend on things like how and where you work with families, and what sort of activities are particularly suited to your role.

By registering as a local supporter, or by using the Change4Life brand assets and/or tools, you automatically agree to be bound by the campaign terms:

Terms for local supporters

If you do not agree to be bound by all of the campaign terms please do not use the brand assets or tools.

6. What are the Change4Life campaign terms?

The campaign terms govern how our partners promote Change4Life. There are two types:

  • Terms of engagement for national commercial organisations and national non-government organisations
  • Campaign terms for local supporters for individuals and local community and voluntary, public and commercial organisations

Terms of engagement for national commercial partners

To receive a copy of the campaign terms for local supporter please email c4lpartnerships@dh.gsi.gov.uk

If you are part of the Department of Health or another Government Department, you only need to agree to the Change4Life brand guidelines

7. Does it cost me anything to get involved?

No - providing you have agreed to the campaign terms, you will be able to use the Change4Life branding assets and tools free of charge.

8. Is any funding available?

There is no funding available. However, a whole range of resources are available for national partners and local supporters to use free of charge, subject to campaign terms. Please see the next question for more details.

9. Is there anything that can help me communicate Change4Life?

Yes! The Change4Life brand assets and tools are provided by the Department of Health to enable partners to create their own Change4Life marketing materials and/or run their own activity.

The brand assets comprise the brand guidelines, the ‘Change4Life’ and sub-brand logos, and the campaign typefaces, primary and secondary colours, and visual characters. The tools comprise downloadable guidance and activities, as well as materials which can be ordered from the Department of Health. Acceptance of the campaign terms gives you access to the brand assets and tools.

10. What are the Change4Life sub-brands?

The desired behaviours may be unpalatable for some people, so we need to make them as simple and enjoyable as possible. A key way of doing this is to help partners run activities to promote specific behaviours. The sub-brands (Play4Life, Let’s Dance with Change4Life, Walk4Life, Swim4Life, Bike4Life and Breakfast4Life) have been created to facilitate this.

11. Can I use a Change4Life or sub-brand logo?

Yes, provided you have agreed to the Change4Life campaign terms and brand guidelines. Please refer to the section above entitled ‘What are the Change4Life campaign terms?’

12. Can I create a new sub-brand?

Priority should be given to using the Change4Life branding or the existing sub-brands. However, partners can apply to create a new sub-brand - applications will need to be submitted to the Department of Health for approval. There are clear ‘dos and don’ts’ on developing a new sub-brand available in the brand guidelines.

If you are part of the Department of Health or another Government Department, the application form for submitting a new sub-brand can be found at

Change4Life assets, and principles and guidelines for Government and NHS

If you are a national partner or local supporter then you can email c4lpartnerships@dh.gsi.gov.uk for an application form.

13. We already run healthy living activities to combat obesity - what do we need to do to connect to Change4Life?

Where possible we would like you to align your activity to Change4Life. The movement will help to make behaviours around diet and physical activity more high profile and will provide accessible, friendly and encouraging support to implement changes. In some instances, your alignment to the movement may involve simply adding the Change4Life logo to your existing materials so that they are co-branded; in others, it may involve developing new initiatives where Change4Life is more prominent.

The amount you can do will depend on the size of your organisation and whether you are a national partner or a local supporter so please refer to the sections on local and national partners above entitled I’m a national partner - what do you want me to do? and I’m a local supporter - what do you want me to do?

14. Which other partners are involved?

You can find out more about the diverse partners already supporting Change4Life in the Partners section.

15. Why are commercial organisations involved with Change4Life?

Commercial organisations can reach our target audience in ways that we cannot. By working in partnership with them, we can tap into the power of brand loyalties and make changes in food manufacturing and shopping habits, supporting new activity schemes and spreading the word in the media.

Before any commercial company can work with us on the Change4Life movement, they must sign up to our Terms of Engagement

Terms of engagement for national commercial partners

These require companies to commit to working with us on both healthy diet and physical activity initiatives.

It is also worth remembering that although the Department of Health has £75million to spend on the Change4Life movement over three years, the commercial sector spends £335million every year promoting confectionery, snacks, fast food and sugary drinks. We need to work with these companies if we are to influence their corporate responsibility agendas.

16. Can I brand my publication to show it is endorsed by Change4Life?

The Department of Health cannot endorse publications. The Change4Life terms of engagement have more information

To receive a copy of the campaign terms for local supporters please email c4lpartnerships@dh.gsi.gov.uk

17. Is there any research available on the target consumers?

The Department of Health has published an insight summary into families’ attitudes and behaviours relating to diet and activity. The summary is available in the Partner Tools section of the Change4Life website.

18. What will be available to the NHS?

Those who work as part of the NHS will receive information on Change4Life through various e-bulletins or via their management teams. Updated information can be found at

http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Publichealth/Change4Life/index.htm

19. I’m a journalist - where can I find more information?

If you are an accredited journalist then please speak to Amanda Waller or Helen Cook at the Department of Health Media Centre on 020 7210 5221 from 8am to 7pm Monday to Friday.

If you are not an accredited journalist then please call Department of Health Public Enquiries on 020 7210 4850. Lines are open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.
