RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, lets you choose to receive content from a number of websites and read it in one place.
RSS feeds alert you when new material is posted on the websites that offer them. This saves you time as you do not have to then check sites individually. Many websites, including NHS Choices, offer RSS feeds.
How do I read an RSS feed?
You need a tool known as an RSS feed reader, or news reader. There are several versions – some need to be downloaded to your computer, others are web-based.
Downloadable or web-based feed readers include:
FeedReader, NewsGator, My Yahoo!, and Google Reader.
The RSS symbol – shown on the left of this page – lets you know that a feed is available. Once you have selected your feed reader you need to ‘subscribe’ to RSS feeds. Just look for the RSS symbol and click on the link. Ignore any code that may be displayed – the important bit you need is the page address from your browser’s address bar. Just copy that into your RSS feed reader, and away you go.
Using NHS Choices RSS feeds on your site
If you run your own website or blog, you can use RSS feeds to display the latest headlines from NHS Choices on your site.
We encourage the use of NHS Choices RSS feeds in this way; however, we do require that the proper format and attribution is used when NHS Choices content appears. The attribution text should read ‘NHS Choices’ or ‘From NHS Choices’, as appropriate, and be linked back to http://www.nhs.uk.
