How do we resolve differences and find common ground as parents?   Margaret: “As parents you may have different ideas of how to bring up your children. For example, how you discipline or reward them. One of you may want to follow what your parents did, while the other may choose to follow what their friends did or follow a parenting guide.   The most important thing is to work it out together. Children need consistency, so work out your solutions and put them into action. Parents who work together are more likely to offer a secure and nurturing environment for their children.   When you're parents, it's quite common to disagree. It's how you react when you disagree that's important. If you feel yourself becoming angry and if you raise your voices, that will affect your baby. It's important to try and find common ground. Listen to your partner's point of view calmly and then try to express your own point of view calmly. However, if you can't agree, do not argue in front of your child, but wait until you're alone to discuss the things that you disagree about.   It's really important to keep in mind what really matters and that is a happy and healthy child. Try to find compromise and agree on how you're going to parent your child. But if you find you can't agree and it's affecting your relationship, please come and seek advice from your GP who can help you find a relationship adviser.”
