Needle and syringe exchange services

This service is designed to address the needs of substance misusers who regularly require fresh, sterile hypodermic syringes and needles to sustain their addiction. It has been implemented to protect the wider community from infectious diseases such as hepatitis which can be spread from contaminated injecting equipment. Once used, the syringes and needles are returned to the pharmacy in exchange for new ones. The clients who need this service are usually referred on from Drug Agencies who work with them on treatment and containment regimes.

Pharmacy chlamydia screening and treatment service

Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea Screening (You Test)
Chlamydia can be a symptom free disease which is caught through sexual activity with another infected person. As there are no obvious signs of infection, sexually active partners can be misled into thinking that they are “clear” of any transmitted disease. Government surveys show that an increasing proportion of men and women have been infected with Chlamydia without realising their condition. Chlamydia can harm and compromise fertility and if you are thinking of becoming pregnant, it might be a wise precaution to be tested. If you are under 25 years of age, we can do the screening free of charge on the NHS. However, the simple way to find out is to ask a member of staff about the service and whether or not you qualify for free NHS testing and where to obtain treatment.

Pharmacy NHS service: medicine use review (MUR) service

You can make an appointment with our pharmacist to discuss how you are getting on with your regular medicines. It will allow you to learn more about your medicines and ask any questions you may have, and if you are having any difficulties taking your medicines your pharmacist will be able to help.

A Medicines Use Review is a face-to-face discussion between you and your pharmacist, with a carer, relative or partner present if you wish. It allows you to ask questions about the medicines you use, both those prescribed and any bought over the counter. It is designed to help you to better understand how, when and why you should take your medicines.

Our pharmacist can explain, in detail, the condition for which each medicine is prescribed and discuss how you can get the most benefit from your medication. Your pharmacist may need to ask you questions about your health to provide you with the best possible advice and how to get the most from each medicine you take.

Broadly speaking this is any person with a long term condition such as asthma, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or anyone over the age of 65. These groups of patients usually qualify for a free flu jab at their GP surgery. If you do not fall into these categories then you almost certainly have to seek out a private arrangement such as ours.

Prescribing services

Repeat Dispensing (Forms)
Your GP may consider certain patients suitable for a repeat dispensing form. This means that your GP can issue special types of prescriptions to last up to 12 months treatment in one batch. If you are a suitable candidate for this, you will be given up to 12 prescription forms at once to take to your pharmacy. The pharmacy will then hold these in a special file and issue the medicines at agreed intervals (normally every 28 days) so that you only need to visit the pharmacy regularly and not the GP. Examples of patients that can be considered appropriate for the Repeat Dispensing service are those on Levothyroxine. Naturally, you can book an appointment with the GP if you have other issues you wish to discuss or feel unwell.
