Dr Badrinathan Chandrasekaran

Dr Chandrasekaran was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at GWH in February 2011.  He graduated from Guy’s & St Thomas’s Medical School in 1998 and did his SHO training at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge and then developed an interest in Cardiology while working at Papworth. 

Dr Chandrasekaran obtained a national training number from the Wessex deanery in 2002 and was a SpR at Great Western Hospital in 2003. He spent a period of research at the Royal Brompton Hospital, working at the NHLI and Imperial College before finishing his training at the Wessex Cardiothoracic Unit in Southampton.  His areas of specialty are Heart failure, Devices and Echocardiography.

Dr Paul Foley

Consultant Cardiologist

Dr Paul Foley is a Consultant Cardiologist who treats emergency inpatients and outpatients. He is a certified specialist in Cardiology and involved in all aspects of general Cardiology including heart attacks and angina. Dr Foley has a specialist interest in heart failure, pacemakers and complex pacing (cardiac resynchronisation and implantable defibrillators). He also undertakes cardiac catheterisation (coronary angiograms) and sees patients with valve problems. He has a special interest in heart rhythm disorders, is accredited by Heart Rhythm UK and, in addition, has passed the written examination of European Heart Rhythm Association.

Dr Foley trained at the University of Bristol, qualifying in 1997. He then worked at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, Plymouth, Brighton and then St Thomas’ in London. Dr Foley undertook specialist Cardiology training in the Wessex region prior to undertaking specialist research as a research fellow at the University of Birmingham. He then undertook an approved advanced training fellowship at the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust in advanced heart failure, device therapy and cardiovascular magnetic resonance.

Dr Foley joined Great Western Hospital in 2009. He has authored a number of book chapters, published over 30 peer reviewed papers and contributed to the Royal College of Physicians of London Medical Masterclass training manual. Dr Foley has a Higher Doctorate (M.D.) awarded for research into cardiac resynchronisation pacing in patients with heart failure using magnetic resonance imaging.

Dr Steve Ramcharitar

Consultant Cardiologist

Dr Steve Ramcharitar is a Consultant Cardiologist at the Great Western Hospital. He is a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease. His medical schooling was in Oxford where he was the Pre-Clinical Advisor's Scholar in 1993. He gained membership of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 2002. As a Junior Doctor he was trained on the Professorial NDM team at the John Radcliffe Hospital and undertook specialist Cardiology training at the Glenfield Hospital.

In 2006-2008 he was awarded an Interventional Fellowship to the Thoraxcenter in Rotterdam where he developed his academic interests in the understanding of the aetiology of coronary disease and evaluating the various imaging and stent technologies used in treating this condition.

He holds a doctorate from the University of Oxford in Chemistry/Biochemistry and did a second doctorate whilst an Interventional Fellow with Professor Patrick Serruys in Interventional Cardiology at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam. He has done post doctoral research at the Scripps Research Institute the USA, and as a JSPS Fellow in Japan. He is a Fellow of the Foulkes Foundation and a member of the European Bifurcation Club. He is also a Fellow of European Society of Cardiology and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.  He is actively trying to develop cardiovascular research locally and has been instrumental in establishing telemedicine capability for teaching and for improving patient care in the catheter laboratories.
