Unprofessionl attitude of consultant

I attended an outpatient appointment today with my 76 year old mother. She is confined to a wheelchair and has various chronic medical conditions. This was a follow up appointment after an ultra-sound scan.

On entering the clinic, the nursing staff were very friendly and helpful. We were asked to wait outside the Consultant's office for a moment. After a short wait, a nurse apologised explaining that the computer systems were running very slowly. I informed them that this was fine, as I work in a busy office and quite understand the difficulties encountered when this happens.

After about a 15 minute wait we were asked to enter the Consultants Office, who made no introduction, just staring at their computer and chuntering, you could clearly sense they were very frustrated. To try and put the consultant at ease, I explained I worked in an office and it was hard work when computers "rang slowly" - to this they snapped at me and informed me that "with the utmost respect I didn't have 15 patients to see". This immediately made my mother and myself very uneasy. The consultant tapped a couple of screens, but was still unable to access sites they needed to see. At the end of the consultation, my mother was told to give a water sample to the nurse and go home and wait for the results.

I was appauled at this so called professional. They just didn't seem to care about the well being of my mother or her dignity.

My mother is a little deaf, again the consultant was frustrated as I had to relay questions to her. I dread to think what their attitude would have been if my mother had been unaccompanied.

We both felt very intimidated by this off hand attitude. Do these people not realise that sometimes it is very difficult for disabled people like my mother even to get to hospital in the first place. My sister, and I care for my Mother, whilst both holding down full and part-time employment. I needed to be at my Mother's house at 5 am this morning, to ensure that Mum was ready for her ambulance transport, we need to be ready two hours before the appointment (as we live 16 miles away from the hospital) which means waiting from 0700hrs ready to go when the ambulance arrives for her appointment at 0950hrs.

The consultation last exactly 10 minutes, then we needed to wait for a further 2 hours for a ambulance to become available to transport us home. We don't mind the wait at all, as without this service my Mother would find it almost impossible to attend out-patient appointments.

I cannot emphasise enough how upset I am at this consultant's behaviour. We left their office, not knowing if my mother had to come back for a follow up appointment or she was discharged from the clinic, they just didn't seem to care at all. I would advise that this person take people skill courses. I left their office feeling totally humiliated and despondent.

Urology Department

Yesterday I attended the Urology Department for a number of test. From first entering the Department to my final examination I was very impressed with the service and attention I received.

From the volunteer who led me through the various examination rooms, to the nurses who tried to make me feel at ease (a difficult job) and the doctor who finally examined me, I was treated in a very professional and caring way. Each introduced themselves by name and explained the procedures I would be going through. A difficult morning for me that was made easier by the attention given by all those involved with me.

Treatment time scale

I was diagnosed with kidney cancer in Dec 2012 and I've had to fight for 3 mnths now to try and find suitable treatment only because I do not want risky surgery!
Its an absolute joke, I know there are other treatment options available in many other forms...I've not had pet scans etc to see if my cancer has spread or a biopsy!

Ive been told to sit back and watch it basically and if it wasnt for me asking for a refferal for a 2nd opinion I would not have got that either!

3 Months and still no treatment plan is a pure joke when it comes to cancer!

Darlington hospital has to be the worst place I've ever had treatment and hopefully I will never have to go back there again!

Fighting cancer is bad enough....Fighting the people who are supposed to help you is twice as bad!

Disgrace!

As above, the NHS at it's very best- excellent!

What I liked

My husband underwent surgery today with the urology team. From the minute we arrived to the time he was admitted to the ward, we have found each staff member we encountered to be very pleasant, considerate and professional. We are both very pleased and impressed with the standard of care and the attitude of each member of staff at whatever level they work. I was treated for breast cancer in this hospital 6 years and found each aspect of my treatment to be outstanding. The NHS at it's very best, although I feel a lot less bureaucracy would benefit patients and staff.

Mr R. Pearson recommended Urology at Darlington Memorial Hospital

Performance of ward14 was no where near the excellent service on ward33.

What I liked

I spent about 5 days, quite ill, on ward 33.
The medical staff, qualified nurses, health care assistants and domestic staff were in general very good, both in technical aspects and in patient care. There were two or three exceptions. They were not "very good", they were excellent! (I would love to be able to name them)
Overall, I was very impresed with the way in which I and other patients (and visitors) were treated, despite a very full ward which was placing big demands on staff at the time.
Even the food was surprisingly good, especially the green salads.

What could have been improved

I was originally admitted to ward 14 as an emergency with a high fever following a prostate biopsy caried out at a different hospital. I was admitted about 3am and given inravenous paracetemol to reduce the fever. I did not see a doctor until after 6am. I was at some stage,I beleive, written up for antibiotic injections, but this was later deleted from the notes and I never received any. By late morning, the fever had subsided and I was discharged with a supply of antibiotics, the same as I had been given following the biopsy. Blood samples were taken about 6am. By mid afternoon, my wife had to call our GP out and the result was another trip in an ambulance, this time to ward 33 where I was found to have a serious infection and was retaining urine. I do feel that staaff on ward 14 did nor pay sufficient attention to evaluating my symptoms, especially as I have since found out that this type of infection is a well known after effect of prostate biopsy, and had they bothered to liaise with the urology dept they would have known this and I might not have been discharged. This premature discharge not only caused me and my family considerable extra distress, it delayed my getting the proper treatment and involved the NHS in the extra expense of calling out my GP and providing an emergency ambulance.

Co-ordinated and professional treatment

What I liked

I am writing to express my heart felt thanks for the care and treatment I received in your hospital between 26th and 30th December 2010. I arrived very late on the 26th December having not been able to pass urine for 18 hours. Particular thanks go to :-

• Doctor and nurses in A&E on the night of 26/27 December who solved the
immediate problem.

• The team in Ward 33 where I was held overnight.

• The Consultant and his surgical team who managed to fit me in for a more
permanent solution.

• The staff in the Day Surgery Unit.
