March 2013 - See Us In The Middleton Guardian! "Surgery's Pioneering Software Helping To Diagnose Dementia"

We were extremely proud to be featured in the 28th February 2013 edition of the Middleton Guardian concerning our recent trial of an iPad application to help spot early signs of dementia.

The test, which has been developed by researchers at the University of Cambridge, assesses patients' short-term memory with a number of challenges where they are asked to remember shapes and symbols.

The practice received a support grant to use the application to try and increase screening in the borough.  It can be argued that earlier detection of dementia can help to ease the suffering of patients and save costs associated with the the treatment in the future.  It can also help to prevent unnecessary referrals to secondary care which can cause worry and inconvenience for patients.

We view this as a valuable service and a step in the right direction for IT integration into primary care and one which provides the practice with a niche for our patients.

If you would like to have a try of the app then please ask at reception.

January 2013 - A Big New Year Welcome To Our New Apprentice Receptionist Lorelle Young!

In an attempt to ensure that our excellent service to our patients is maintained despite our growth in patient numbers we have recently taken on a new full time apprentice receptionist.  Lorelle Young started with us on Monday 7th January and will be offering admin and reception support to our patients Monday to Friday.

Lorelle has successfully enrolled on a 12 month apprenticeship scheme which has been set up to try and encourage young people to obtain skills whilst working in an office environment.  Lorelle will be attending a day release course on a Tuesday afternoon to learn about her new role.  I am sure you will make her feel welcome!

December - Help Us To Help You Get An Appointment When You Need One! Always Cancel Your Appointments So That Patients On Our Cancellation List Can Have Them!

The practice is facing an ever increasing amount of missed appointments on a daily basis.  This is affecting our ability to offer patients an appointment at a day and time convenient to themselves and we would therefore ask that should you not require or cannot make your appointment, that you cancel it.

The practice has a number of reserved appointments for urgent on the day cases and once these have been used we have a cancellation list which is unlike other practices as we will ring you if a cancellation occurs rather than you ringing us.  However, we can only ring you if other patients cancel their appointments so please help us to make this service as efficient as possible.

Missed appointments are currently costing your practice around £1000 per month.  If we saved this money we could increase our GP appointment capacity by 70 appointments per month, again making it easier to obtain an appointment when you require.

Just a reminder that you can text us to cancel your appointment by sending the word 'cancel' with your name and date of birth to  07780793149.

November 2012 - Whooping Cough & Pregnancy, Are You Over 28 Weeks Pregnant?

As you may have heard on the news there has been a recent rise in reported cases of whooping cough in the UK.

Following the deaths of 9 babies in England and as all the babies were below the age of their first set of immunisations, the Department Of Health has decided that women in the later stages of pregnancy should be offered the whooping cough vaccination.

The aim of this vaccination is to protect the baby in the first few weeks of life.  If you are between 28 and 38 weeks pregnant then please contact the surgery and make an appointment with the nurse to have a whooping cough booster or for further information please contact the surgery.

May 2013 - A New Clinical System To Improve Services Further For Our Patients

In an attempt to improve efficiency of maintaining your records, the practice will be moving to a new system called EMIS Web this month.  This system will improve efficiency and hopefully give us more time to develop and improve our services further.  This is a huge change for all of our staff, some of which have been using our old system for well over 10 years.

The practice holds a secure and encrypted database which houses around 32,000 patient records, with 3600 of them for our current registered patients.  This is a huge database and as with any GP practice we are heavily reliant on it.

As with any system change there may be some disruption to our service and we ask that you bear with us whilst we find our feet!
