Swine Flu Vaccination Programme

We have now commenced our swine flu vaccination programme for all those patients in the Government’s priority groups, i.e. adults and children over 6 months of age who have a long term health condition, including:

·         Chronic lung disease

·         Chronic heart disease

·         Chronic kidney disease

·         Chronic neurological diseases

·         Diabetes mellitus

·         Immunosuppression caused by a disease or treatment for a disease, e.g. this may include people who do not have a spleen, people who are on immunosuppressant treatment or are taking high doses of systemic steroids.

All of these patients should by now have received their invitation to attend one of our Saturday morning swine flu clinics.  As the vaccine is held in vials of 10 doses, we are unable to carry these out on an ad-hoc basis and patients must attended one of the designated clinics.

Patients who are pregnant and those who live in the same house as someone whose immune system is compromised by disease or treatment is also eligible to receive the swine flu vaccine and, if you have not received an invitation to attend a clinic but are in one of these groups, please contact the Surgery.

As you may also be aware from recent news reports, the Government is also rolling out the programme to ALL children aged 6 months to 5 years, even those with no underlying long term health condition.   However, this will be in the second phase of the programme, along with carers and will be offered only once we have completed the vaccination of priority groups.

Patients with egg allergies:  If you have been invited for a swine flu vaccination but are allergic to eggs, please let us know as you will need to be given a different type of vaccine.  This vaccine will not be held in the Surgery but at the Boscombe & Springbourne Centre in Shelley Road, Boscombe.  They will be holding swine flu vaccination clinics during December – details to be available shortly.
