Ophthalmology

The ophthalmic department is part of the head and neck directorate service which includes ophthalmology and the maxillofacial department, and consists of Spencer ward, eye out patients and ophthalmic theatres.

Our aim is provide patients with excellent standards of care in a warm and friendly environment.  The treatments we offer are delivered by a team of professional, dedicated and approachable staff with a view to reduce fears, anxieties or apprehensions you may have regarding your condition.

Individual care is given by all members of the multidisciplinary team to achieve the best possible outcomes for everyone in the department.

Our nursing staff work a variety of shift patterns within these times to reflect the needs of the service.  The clinics held in this department are general ophthalmic clinics, specialist clinics and an appointment only eye casualty clinic. We also run outreach clinics at Corby Diagnostics, Nene Park in Irthlingborough, and Isebrook Hospital in Wellingborough.

Wards

Spencer Ward is a day surgery ward providing a relaxed yet professional atmosphere.  It may be necessary on occasion for a patient to stay overnight in which case they would be transferred to AM Lee Ward.  Two single and one double side room is available for those needing a general anaesthetic.  Meals are provided for patients having their operation on Spencer Ward and beverages are available throughout the day.

Eye casualty

Based in the ophthalmic out-patients department, our eye casualty clinic allows us to see patients who have been referred to us from their GP in a swift and timely manner.  If your condition is urgent, we advise you to come to us straight away. If we are closed, please attend A&E.

We are open 9am til 5pm Monday – Thursday and 9am til 12:30am Friday. Contact 01536 492105 for an urgent appointment.

Things you should know

The ophthalmic outpatients department is open Monday to Thursday 8.30am till 12.30pm and again from 1pm till 6pm. Each Friday we are open from 8.30am till 1pm.

Staff

We have six consultant ophthalmologists, two associate specialists and a team of three junior doctors. The rest of the team is made up of orthoptists, nurses, health care assistants, medical secretaries, reception staff, a photographer, a low visual aid practitioner and contact lens specialist.
