Cargill create sensory garden and vegetable patch

Staff and service users at the sensory garden launch

Spring 2014 will mark the third anniversary of our sensory garden, donated to us by our corporate supporter Cargill who also gave their time to help create and maintain the garden.

The sensory garden features tactile, brightly coloured and scented plants and was designed especially for people with disabilities. It was officially launched by Martin Douglas, the General Manager of Cargill Manchester in March 2011.

Since then, the garden has gone from strength to strength and everyone who lives here has got involved with it. We have also since created a new vegetable patch, as Yew Tree Lane's Registered Manage, Kerry Ryan explains:

“We knew everyone who lives here would enjoy their time working in the garden with Cargill volunteers. What we didn’t expect was how excited everybody would get about the progress of the plants – it’s become a favourite topic of conversation in the house!”

“Growing their own fresh produce has also given everyone a new enthusiasm for cooking. People living here love using the vegetables they have looked after to make tasty and healthy meals. Working to help people live as independently as possible is at the heart of everything Henshaws does, so to have the residents so enthused about cooking, wanting to learn new recipes and helping to prepare them is a real achievement for us.”

“It’s wonderful that something which sounds so simple has brought such joy to the people living at Yew Tree Lane. Once again Cargill and their staff have worked hard to create something that has brought a smile to the faces of people living here and staff. We are hugely grateful to Cargill for their on-going support and help.”
