Fasting blood test at Breeze Hill: 29 October 2013

Having read some of the reviews of this service, I turned up at 8.35 this morning expecting a lengthy wait. In fact, l left the building at 8.50, test completed.

What stops me awarding 5 stars are the following;

(a) the inability to book a fasting test before 11.30;

(b )the fact one has to traipse to Breeze Hill to take a test - it should be available in one's GP Surgery.

Kensington Health Centre, Phlebotomy

Great service, especially being open from 7am - 7pm. It's just a shame I had to go here instead of the walk in centre in liverpool city centre however which was far more conveniant. It took me 2/3 months to find the time to get to Kensington (not being a car driver), whereas I could just walk to to the walk-in on my way into work.

New Childwall Centre

I have attended here twicce for blood test. The first time I waited about half an hour, the second time for follow ups about 10 minutes

Excellent Service, nice environment and both the nurses were very friendly and putting even a nervous patient like me at ease

Full waiting room - very, very slow progress

I arrived at about 8.40 to a pretty full waiting room. After an hour I had moved 5 places up the ticket list with another 11 numbers before me. On that reckoning it was going to be another two hours before I gave a small blood sample! An appointment system or more staff would be beneficial.
In the end, like two other folk, I gave up and left....
I then went to the York Centre and found the same situation.....
I have decided that my Cholesterol levels are better managed by my 'guesswork' than the stress of losing working time in NHS waiting rooms.
Why can't my doctor's practice nurse do these checks whilst I'm talking to her?

I am sorry to hear of your experience with regards to the waiting time in the phlebotomy clinic on the day you attended. As it is a walk in service, it is difficult to predict what the demand will be on a particular day. Occasionally, the phlebotomist may be delayed with a patient who requires longer to have their blood taken and this can then cause a delay in the system. Or, sometimes, the demand is far greater than we would normally expect it to be, with a larger number of patients attending at the same time. This can also slow down the process.

We do have a number of bookable appointments available between 11.30am and 1.00pm at Breeze Hill Medical Centre and Kensington Health Centre for anyone who wishes to have a specific time for their blood test. Patients find this to be beneficial especially if they have other commitments.

There are also three sites, Kensington Health Centre, Breeze Hill Medical Centre and South Liverpool NHS Treatment Centre with extended opening hours until 7.00pm and this gives patients a great range of times for them to attend and you may wish to consider using one of these clinics and attending later in the day.

Childwall Health Centre

Got to Childwall at 10.20. It took me a while to find out where to go for phlebotomy services because there are several receptions and staff were not very helpful. Took a ticket with a number on it. (like the deli counter in a supermarket). After 40 minutes only 5 patients had been seen. The phlebotomist came out to say that there were more people with numbers than they would be able to see before 12.30 and suggested that those who had the higher numbers should go and come back another day. This is a new building, supposedly offering state-of-the art services. There is no point in spending millions on a new building if it is under-staffed and can't cater for its patients. I'm used to this kind of thing at the Royal but I expected something better from a new facility.

Thank you for your comments regarding your experience at Childwall Phlebotomy Services.

You have advised that in view of there being several reception areas it took you a while to find out where phlebotomy is. Although there are two Perspex signs on the GP reception areas on the ground floors advising of where the blood tests are done I will liaise with the building practice manager to see if we can increase the signage to make this clearer. I can only apologise that you felt the reception staff were not very helpful and this will be addressed.

We do use a ticket system for patients waiting to be seen as this has proved effective for walk in services. Regarding the wait of 40 minutes and only 5 patients being seen and the phlebotomist advising patients with higher numbers to return another day we have clear contingencies in place to deal with delays or higher volumes of patients that would appear were not adhered to on this particular day. I apologise that this was the case. I will ensure that all staff follow the correct procedure for dealing with any delays and I am sorry that you encountered some problems during your visit.

I will address the issues raised and hope that should you need to visit Childwall or any future sites for phlebotomy that your experience is a positive one.

Regards
Diagnostics Team Leader

hospital search for local blood tests

I have spent an hour looking for local hospital for blood tests which I have to go for tomorrow in order to take warfarin for a blood clot. I put my postcode in of l25 and was shown hospitals in Warrington, Tarporley, ormskirk, chester etc when I wanted and kept asking for Garson in Liverpool 19. Then I had to try to find the times of the clinic or drop in for this. I have always found this site terrible to negotiate and find what you are looking for.It gives you information about things you have not asked for and is useless in many ways. I admire the NHS and most people working in it but this web site is another thing entirely

Can't use cross border services anymore

I have MG and am on Methotrexate so have to have my bloods taken every 4-6 weeks. Although I live in Liverpool I used to be able to go to a Knowsley clinic to get them done with no issue. Unfortunately Liverpool have decided not to pay for any of their patients to go across the border and so I'm now forced to go and sit at the York centre for an absolute age, whilst either taking time off work to do this or taking a 3 year old with me! Once again we see the CCG's choosing their budget over patient care. Please listen to patients who need to get bloods done on a regular basis and stop making things a logistical nightmare. Bring back the reciprocal agreement across CCG's!!

Thank you for your comments and we apologise for the delay in responding to you.

I am sorry that the service is not meeting your current needs and would like to reassure you that Commissioners across Liverpool and Knowsley are in discussions regarding this and hope to reach a resolution shortly to enable patients to have their bloods taken at the most convenient venue for them irrespective of where they live.

Thank you once again for your feedback.

Overall a good experience

I arrived at 9am and waited 25 minutes which was OK. The staff were pleasant and professional - which is the most important thing in my view. The centre appeared clean.

The waiting area was quite crowded hence smelly but not a major problem - it's not the NHS's fault if you have to sit by other people waiting who haven't bothered to wash themselves in the past week!

can't believe coverage in town is so bad

Relatively recently I was diagnosed as diabetic, and time after time I am stunned trying to use NHS services how little regard there is for the fact people work..... Until now I have never needed to use much other than my local GP when I was sick or had a problem, but I am stunned how NHS services uses the assumption that only unemployed get fat, or diabetes, or need blood tests. (or if you do work, you have a car.....)

Thank you for your comments and we apologise for the delay in responding to you.

We are extremely sorry to hear of your experience with the new service.

The aim of the phlebotomy service is to provide safe, timely and accessible phlebotomy provision to the population resident in Liverpool or registered with a Liverpool General Practitioner.

Previous service provision varied across the city and was not accessible to all. In order to ensure access, the service is being delivered from the sites listed on the leaflet ( http://www.liverpoolcommunityhealth.nhs.uk/Downloads/SERVICES/ADULTS/Blood%20Sampling/PhlebLeafletFinal.pdf ) which cover Liverpool’s 19 neighbourhoods. The time periods are 8.30 – 12.30 across all sites to create a fixed structure of service provision acceptable to the population and that enable the effective analysis of the blood sample. Please also see our website for more information: http://www.liverpoolcommunityhealth.nhs.uk/health-services/phlebotomy.htm

In relation to your concerns with access in the city centre I can confirm that Ropewalks Health Centre on Park Street provide an open access service from 8.30 – 12.30 Wednesday to Friday. Other clinics that may be easier for you to access are as follows:

• Everton Road Health Centre
• Kensington Health Centre
• Riverside Centre for Health
• Vauxhall Health Centre

There are also 3 sites that offer extended opening hours from 7.30am to 7pm, Kensington Health Centre being the closest to the City Centre.

The leaflet details the full list of clinics which cover all of Liverpool’s identified neighbourhoods (1 per neighbourhood). These were chosen as they could offer the service within the fixed time periods for their particular neighbourhood.

This is a new service and providers and commissioners are working together to resolve developmental issues. Your particular comments have been logged and will be discussed at the next phlebotomy service meeting. Liverpool CCG are committed to providing a high quality service across the city and will be reviewing access and service provision with an aim to re-commissioning the service in areas where gaps have been identified.

We really value your comments and appreciate your time in bringing these issues to our attention. If you have any further concerns or enquiries about this matter, I would encourage you to contact Liverpool CCG directly at the following address:
