Overview

It's 250 years since the RVI first opened its door

Welcome to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI)

We’ve been providing healthcare to the communities of Newcastle and the North East for over 250 years, but there’s nothing old-fashioned about our services which are among the safest and most advanced in the UK.

From broken bones in our brand new Emergency Department, to tropical fevers in the infectious diseases unit; from all types of neurolocial conditions to children's immune system deficiencies, we provide a full range of modern healthcare services.

They range from emergency care, like our Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic, to our pioneering burns unit and our innovative dermatology unit, the region’s sole provider of the leading edge Mohs micrographic surgery for skin cancer.

Many of our services are officially designated regional centres of expertise enjoying international reputations, like our Neurosciences Centre, which treats people with illnesses affecting the nervous system, including the brain and the spinal cord.

The Great North Children’s Hospital offers a wide range of specialist services for children including our Paediatric Intensive Care Unit for the seriously ill, and our state-of-the-art “bubble unit” for children with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Syndrome (SCIDS) – one of only two in the country.

Our Maternity Department is one of the UK’s largest, helping to bring nearly 7,000 babies into the world every year. And with our consultant-led service, you know you’re in the safest hands possible however your pregnancy develops.

We also understand the often very different needs of our elderly patients. Our Falls and Syncope Service, the largest of its kind in Europe, helps to relieve the stress and discomfort of balance, black-out and dizziness, so our patients enjoy mobile and independent lives. The Eye Department has one of the UK’s largest cataract centres, and offers advanced treatments for age-related eye problems such as ARMD (Age Related Macular Degeneration), the major cause of blindness in the UK.
