Hospital praised for dementia care

Staff at Scunthorpe General Hospital have been praised for their efforts to improve the care given to dementia patients and their families.

The hospital has been awarded a working to become dementia friendly’ recognition award from the Dementia Action Alliance.

Recent improvements implemented to improve the care given to dementia patients and their families include:

  • Dementia friendly bays created on wards designed to put dementia patients at ease
  • Working towards having dementia champions across all wards and departments
  • Additional training for staff including a new leadership course called Bee Inspired
  • Regular drop-in sessions on site with the Alzheimer’s Society for the public
  • The use of the ‘My Life’ person-centred planning tool to help staff to see the person with dementia as an individual.

Rachel Greenbeck, quality matron with a special focus on dementia care, received the dementia friendly recognition award on behalf of the hospital. She says its important healthcare providers adapt to the needs of the local community. She said: “People with dementia over the age of 65 currently occupy up to a quarter of hospital beds at one time and there is an unacceptable variation in the provision of dementia care across the country which has led to a call to focus on the quality of dementia care.

“Hospital environments are particularly challenging for people with memory and communication problems, with cluttered ward layouts, poor signage and other hazards. It is vital we ensure our staff are fully trained in how to give appropriate care to people with dementia and that the hospital environment is suitable.”
