Overview

Royal Liverpool University Hospital

The Royal Liverpool University Hospital is the biggest and busiest hospital in Merseyside. It is part of the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.

It currently has over 40 wards, more than 750 beds (excluding day case and dialysis beds) and has the main accident and emergency department for the city of Liverpool, the largest of its kind in the country, capable of dealing with major trauma and life threatening illness.

The major acute services such as cardiology, respiratory care and general surgery are based within the hospital, together with regional and national specialist services in nephrology, renal transplant, renal dialysis, tropical and infectious diseases, ophthalmology, haematology, bone marrow transplant and vascular surgery. It is a leading cancer centre, treating over 20 types of cancer, is the regional centre for 11 types of cancer and a national centre for eye cancer. We have one of the best stroke services in the country.

The hospital works closely with both Liverpool University and John Moores University to provide placements for student doctors, nurses, dentists and allied health professionals. Our aim is to provide quality undergraduate and postgraduate education and development in all disciplines and to continue to be recognised as a centre of excellence in biomedical, clinical and health service research.

Our research and development portfolio is one of the largest portfolios of clinical research in the North West with over 500 clinical research projects covering many disease areas including cancer, gastroenterology, oral health, stroke, ophthalmology, infection and pharmacology. We have the only NIHR biomedical research unit in the UK dedicated to the pancreas.

A new Royal Liverpool University Hospital is due to open in 2017. It will have all en-suite single bedrooms, a welcoming environment and will be easier to find your way around.
