What this data shows:

This measure shows the percentage of A&E attendances which are admitted, transferred or discharged within 4 hours of arrival.

How the data is gathered:

The operational standard is that 95% of patients should be admitted, transferred or discharged within 4 hours of their arrival at an A&E departmentData represents the NHS Trust (so can be based on more than one hospital provider)

Note: Fourteen hospitals have been chosen to pilot a new way to measure A&E performance. As a result of this, these providers have not been required to report their number of attendances over 4hrs since May 2019. The fourteen providers are:

  • Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust
  • Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
  • Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust
  • North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust
  • Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust
  • University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust
  • Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust
  • The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust
  • West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust

This information is gathered from providers within NHS Trusts, NHS Foundation Trusts and Independent Sector Organisations. NHS England is responsible for publishing these statistics.

The data includes: - total number of attendances in the week for all A & E types, including Minor Injury Units and Walk-in Centres, and of these, the number discharged, admitted or transferred within four hours of arrival- number of admissions via A&E, and any waits over four hours and over 12 hours for admission following a decision to admit.
