Cancer patient experience

What this data shows:

To encourage progress towards the ambition set by the Independent Cancer Taskforce in July 2015 of continuous improvement in patient experience.

How the data is gathered:

Improving cancer patient experience (and quality of life) is one of the three key ambitions in the report, Achieving world-class cancer outcomes: a strategy for England 2015-2020, published by the Independent Cancer Taskforce in July 2015. The Taskforce has set an ambition for continuous improvement in patient experience and to give it equal priority as clinical outcomes.

Calculation is based on the following data items: The numerator is the sum of all individual valid responses to the question ""Overall, how would you rate your care?, on a scale from 0 (very poor) to 10 (very good)."" The denominator is the count of all valid responses. The indicator value is not a simple ratio numerator / denominator. Although it is an average score on a 0 to 10 scale, it is the outcome of a case-mix adjustment regression model, where results are adjusted by age, gender, ethnicity, cancer type and deprivation.

Published scores in each year are calculated for the CCG boundaries existing from 1 April of the year of the survey to 31 March of the following year. Where CCG IAF scores are published for different CCG boundaries (e.g. as some CCGs will have merged after the end of that financial year), for CCGs which did not exist in 1 April of the year of the survey , scores for those CCGs are the outcome of a statistical model generating case-mix adjusted scores, with the different CCG boundaries. Scores for CCGs who existed in the year of the survey are the same as in the CPES publication.

Note that indicator values changed from a rate of positive responses (up to 2014) to an average score (from 2015)."

More information about the data source:

The sample for the survey included all adults (aged 16 and over) NHS patients, with a confirmed primary diagnosis of cancer, discharged from a NHS trust after an inpatient episode case attendance for cancer related treatment in the months of April, May, and June of the year of the survey.
