Your NHS guide to having a baby

What you will need for the baby

Preparing for the arrival of a new baby can be exciting, but it’s also easy to get confused about all the equipment you may need once your child arrives. While the choices you make will obviously depend on your budget and personal circumstances, there are some essentials that every new parent needs. You can read more about looking after your child in the Birth to five guide.

Newborn essentials

Nappies

This takes you to the Birth to five guide, which sets out what you'll need for changing a nappy and how to do it. You'll also find facts about washable nappies and dealing with nappy rash.

Washing and bathing

In the Birth to five guide, find out how to wash your baby, how to give him or her a bath, and the things you'll need, such as cotton wool.

Bedding, mattresses and cots

Find out how to help your baby sleep as safely and comfortably as possible, and the safety standards you need to look for in a cot.

Buggies, prams, carriers and car seats

Find out what you'll need to take your baby out and about, from prams to safe car seats.

Clothes for your baby

Find out the basic items of clothing you'll need for your newborn.

Breastfeeding

Get all the information you need to help you breastfeed, plus tips on overcoming common problems, in the Breastfeeding guide.

Bottle feeding

Find out in the Birth to five guide what you need to bottle feed your baby, whether with breast milk or formula, and common problems you might come across.

Getting advice

Remember, you can always ask your midwife or health visitor for advice on what to buy, and you may be given a list of essentials at your antenatal classes.

You may be able to borrow some items, and then pass them on later to another mum-to-be or keep them for your next child. You can also buy a lot of baby equipment second-hand. The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) holds regular sales of second-hand baby clothes, toys and equipment. Find out about the NCT near you. If you buy second-hand equipment, make sure it is safe. Some items, such as baby car seats, should always be bought new.
