Peter Swift, Derby LINk

Peter Swift, Derby LINk member

Peter Swift, 81, is vice-chairman of Derby LINk. At first, Peter wasn’t sure how much he would be able to contribute to the LINk, but his management experience has proved invaluable.

“I am 81 this year but I’m not slowing down – being a part of my LINk means that my brain is as active as ever.

“I wasn’t sure that I would have much to contribute to the LINk at first, since I have little medical knowledge, but in actual fact I didn’t know how useful I could be.

“I have been able to apply my years of management experience to the way our group works.

“I think that my age has actually helped our LINk with our most recent consultation into residential care homes in Derby. I appreciate the needs of an older person and so have been able to contribute greatly to this work.

“I have had an interest in public engagement for a long time now, and we achieve it within our LINk. So far, I have assisted with consultations into dentistry, GP-led health centres and care for the elderly.

“My confidence has increased as I received training on how to work effectively with commissioners – I feel like I can now talk to anyone! I recently received the Star award from my colleagues for my hard work and dedication.

“It is so important that people join their LINk, since it gives you a say in how your services are run.

“If you want to help out your community but are not sure how, LINks are a great place to start.”
