How to apply for and renew an EHIC

Check that your EHIC is still valid before you travel. Applying for the card is free. You can renew an EHIC up to six months before the expiry date. However, any time left on the card will not be added to your new card. An EHIC is valid for five years.

Renew or apply for your free EHIC and go abroad knowing you are more prepared.

Remember to check the expiry date on your EHIC before you travel. Residents of the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are not eligible for an EHIC.

How to apply

There are several ways to apply for an EHIC. The quickest way is to apply online at www.ehic.org.uk. It's free to apply for the card. However, other unofficial websites may charge you if you apply through them.

You can also apply by phoning the automated service on 0845 606 2030.

Alternatively, you can download an application form (PDF, 122Kb) and return it to the NHS Business Services Authority (see below for the address), who process all applications. You cannot use this application form if you live outside the UK.

Your card will normally arrive within seven days if you apply using the official process.

You can apply for yourself or on behalf of your partner and any dependant children in full-time education under the age of 19. If you are under 16, a parent or guardian will need to apply for you. Boarding school teaching staff can apply on behalf of any children in their care.

Each person you apply for will need to give their:

  • full name
  • date of birth
  • National Insurance or NHS number (CHI number in Scotland or Health and Care Number in Northern Ireland)

Temporary National Insurance numbers are not valid. A temporary National Insurance number uses the prefix 'TN', the date of birth and M or F to denote gender (for example TN131160M). These are no longer accepted and cannot be used to apply for an EHIC.

If you need to update your personal details or add a dependant, speak to the EHIC enquiries team on 0845 606 2030.

When you cannot apply online

If you are ordinarily resident in the UK but you are not a national of the UK, EEA or Switzerland, you cannot apply online. The only way to apply for a UK-issued EHIC card is by post. You must provide evidence that you are ordinarily resident in the UK. Proof of entitlement could be your visa, a letter from the Home Office, a letter from your employer or an approved A1, S1, E101, E106 or E109 form.

Complete the EHIC application form (PDF, 122Kb) and post it to:

NHS Business Services Authority
European Health Insurance Card
EHIC Applications
Sandyford House
Archbold Terrace
Newcastle upon Tyne
NE2 1BF

You will also need to apply by post if:

  • You receive a state pension or other long-term benefit from the UK and live in another EU member state (see EU regulations).
  • You are dependent on a citizen working in the UK and live in another EU member state (see EU regulations).
  • You are already working abroad but remain UK employed or self-employed.
  • You are studying abroad.

The EHIC application form is different for people living abroad. If you live abroad, contact the Overseas Healthcare Team on +44 191 218 1999 and ask for the correct form to be sent to you.

Complete the form and post it to the NHS Business Services Authority at the address above.

Replacing an EHIC

If you need to replace a lost EHIC, call 0845 606 2030.

If your EHIC is lost or stolen while you are abroad, you or someone on your behalf should apply for a Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC). This will give you the same cover as an EHIC until you return home. To apply, call the Overseas Healthcare Team on +44 191 218 1999 (Monday to Friday, 8am–5pm). It's a good idea to save this number in your phone.

To get a PRC, you will need to provide your name, address, date of birth and National Insurance or NHS number (CHI number in Scotland or Health and Care Number in Northern Ireland).

Just to clarify i read your article and found it very interesting the website on your link does closely resemble the one on this very webiste yes, i agree but ithe one the OFT mentioned on their site was

Portcreek Ltd (www.ehic.org)

whereas the one advertised on this NHS site is

www.ehic.org.uk.

if you type into google E111 you will probably get directed to the sponsered sites first, which again on their terms and conditions state, we are not affiliated with the NHS,

to be fair this information could be more clear, but like i said the purpose of this was just to clarify

I fell prey to the same scam & the worst thing is, they are linked to the NHS! This very page directs you to the shonky site that will charge you £15 to do all the work that should be free of charge. There is no option to pay by paypal, so you can't get a refund or stop the payment and you can not speak to any one in person. Very suspicious.

I don't back down when I'm being ripped off and neither should you. I will be contacting the ombudsman, my mp, trading standards, newspapers, magazines & Watchdog to create the biggest fuss possible. Stories about the public being conned are always big news now.

At the very least, the more people we inform & warn, the less business these dirtbags will get

Hi, I just had been on the same scam site like everybody else. My daughter is going to a school trip very soon, she needs EHIC card No. She googled and filled half of the application form in herself and ask me to finish it at last. I just trusted her and finished the remaining information and paid £14.99 quickly. I thought it was an offical site as the colour, language... misleading me plus I trusted my 13 years old! I realised that I have been cheated immdiately after I came back to their home page and read through the 'Contact us' session. I called my credit company and have been told the money already been taken. It worried me sick to give all my family's details to a scam so easily and so stuipdly. I asked the credit card company to block my card immediately and I am going to cancel it if they can not protect me and get my money back! However, the offical site showed my application was in progress.

Anyway, I felt NHS and Google both have to responsible for it. I believe we should work together to fight with this scam and get our money back from the scam? NHS or even Google? It is huge amount cash when you think how many of us have been cheated?

Do you agree with me? We should try to bring NHS and Google to court if they do nothing about it, otherwise more people will be robbed.

I'm so mad at myself for being fooled into parting with £14.99 on a website that does not make it obvious that it is in no way related to the NHS. In my panic to get our EHIC sorted out (amongst everything else) prior to our holiday, I'm afraid to say I did not read the small print. What is more annoying though, is why these websites are allowed to exist or are at least not monitored to ensure they are not getting money for old rope! Following my application I tried on the official NHS website to apply and was told that an application in in progress so I feel a little comforted by that but there is a nagging doubt that someone in Belgium has mine and my partners personal details. More warnings on your website please NHS!!

I contacted my credit card immediately having discovered this via the NHS site only about 15 minutes after the paymant.
The card providers were very helpful and took note of the payment details.I was informed that should any further payments be attempted they would block them additionall should any false claims be made I should notify them and they woiuld deal with it.
I agree with everyone who wants the offending sites closed down.
So why I wonder are they still out there??

I went through a website that I thought was the NHS one to apply for a EHIC and ending up paying for this through Paypal. I never received the card and contacted the company and asked them to refund the money to my account. I then applied through the correct website and received the card in less than 2 weeks. I have still not got the money back from the other company who told me they had refunded this and really annoyed that people can get away with ripping people off and making money this way. Can't anything be done to prosecute these people.

Well, maybe I was lucky! It will be the first time. Everything was absolutely simple and uncomplicated once I got over the major frustration of discovering how to access the renewal page. The link is not obvious. It is in the second last paragraph, "Renewing your EHIC". It is not highlighted in blue but simply underlined;however it is a link. "Apply for your free EHIC" After that it really was dead simple and I am a technically incompetent 66 year old.

Tip for the Web Page Designers.," Make the link more obvious and get rid of the pop ups that direct you to a paying site.

i actually gave my house number as "1" and on my third try i even spelt it.
not to worry,in these austere times,i can take comfort in the fact that another government department has ripped me off in an elongated non fruitful phone call.

Please, please please, do something and sort out that link so we can renew or apply for our EHICs! I've been trying for more than an hour now, and all I get is "failed to open page", "server not responding", and such nonsense. On the other hand, scammers who charge for reviewing one's data have no problem getting through.

I need to get my EHIC renewed, and my time is running short. I can ill afford £15 for a scammy renewal. EHIC is supposed to be free, as you keep saying on the website. I have a disability, so I do not want to risk going abroad without EHIC. This is driving me crazy and it's preventing me from getting anything done.

That this department does still use 0845 numbers puts them in the absolute sewer of humanity.

I was also robbed

Astonishingly, the scam appears to be legal, according to the small print
at the bottom of the page, and has *nothing to do with the NHS*!:
"Universal Check Services are a third party data processor and check and
send service registered with the UK Data Protection Public Register (Number
Z2497964) to collect and retain EHIC card applications. This website is not
connected to or affiliated with the National Health Service, The Department
of Health or any other official Government body."

The Contact Us page gives an address in Belgium, but the ICO website reveals
a London address.

Next thing, some spivvy website like this will offer to get people GP and
dentist appointments for "only £14.99"!

I have reported the scumbags to my MP and my local trading standards authority. I suggest otheres do likewise.

When he received his card with a letter I used the web address on the letter www.nhs.uk/healthcareabroad to renew the cards for the remaining 3 members of our family. This service was free!! How extremely confusing? The letter which came with the card he had paid for was now directing us to a free site!

One is left wondering if the government staff concerned read the comments included on this page, and if so, what if any action do they propose to take to protect others from making the same mistake?

If you can wait the 7 to 10 days stated for delivery, this is the easiest and, in my opinion, the best way. It uses a brilliant automated speech recognition system and apart from giving some of your address details, all the info you need is on your EHIC card. You can also renew family members by giving only their first name.
It takes very little time and its all free of charge.

at 65+ years for a human, a computer can be daunting, they did not really exist until we were over 40.
still having risen to the challenge and substantially conquered it eventually, thanks mainly to a succession of my darling applemacs, i now encounter another almost insurmountable hurdle.
The best of trying to renew EHIC without cost!
History- back in the days of E111 one filled out a form, got it stamped then disappeared 'forever' to Europe with it, in 'gay' abandon when even that word was hardly emotive.
Now to renew a 5 year credit card sized bit of plastic without being conned into parting with cash unnecessarily, takes guile and tenacity let alone a bloody minded approach to bureaucracy.
i have not succeeded yet but needed to state, whilst hot on the trail, my disapproval of this type of exploitation.
It is an absolute disgrace for UK government institutions to expose vulnerable citizens. Like throwing christians to the lions. Another similar group is the DVLA, who can create a non productive, parasitic job out of fresh air !
All on the back of administration.
Now just to add insult to injury it says somewhere on this sheet that my immaculate prose will not be reviewed until end of December 2012, Next year, 21 months away. Perhaps they could create another 10 jobs to pull it ahead a month ?
Rant over, now to continue the quest for that elusive free renewal of my EHIC. ta dj

I have also been mislead by the website charging £9.99 per card. Encouraged by comments here, I sent a polite e mail, suggesting that they make it more clear that one can obtain renewals from the nhs site without a fee. (I thought I was on the nhs website as they use the logo on their homepage!. I asked for a refund, but all I have received are a couple of increasingly rude e mails. I was wondering how JRR managed to get a refund? At the end of the day, it is only £20, but I am annoyed that this site can exist, and wonder why they can get away with it?

I have emailed the company and demanded a refund. Do you think I will get one?. I think its a misleading site so can I claim the fee back under my statutory rights?

EHIC line is easy for card renewal only.
impossible for change of details or obtaining Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC).
Cannot get through to a human being.

Most phone numbers redirect to automated line, which simply cuts off calls instead redirecting to humans.
Another number simply puts you on hold for ten minutes.
I've tried every phone number on the ehic website.

Save your time and don't bother with the phone service.

I didnt have any problems using this site but only found it after I had used a website which charged £9.95 for renewal. I was able to reclaim my fee under statutory rights and re-submit my renewal on this NHS site. Not sure if I will now get 2 new cards but better than paying unnecessarily! I thought it was free last time.

I have just completed the process of renewing my EHIC over the phone, outside of office hours, talking to an automated service. This is the best such system that I have used. Quick, simple and best of all "proactive". It prompted me to renew my wife's card. Excellent.

I also found the website difficult to use so rang. The automated phone service could not recognise/spell my surname [ which is English ] so I waited for an operator. They were very efficient and the whole job was done very quickly. I also found that they are charging £9.99 for this free service so beware!

To renew use the phone system. It is an automatic one and only asks for information on your EHIC. The web renewal is the same form as for application and is too stupid to let you fill it in without finding your NHS number.

If you are applying for a family's card all you need to do is say the 'christian' name of all the subsequent people. Very slick.

The telephone renewal is easy. I used the number on the back of my card 0191 218 1999 and all I needed was

the pin number (the one beginning UK on my card)
my date of birth
my surname
my postcode
the first line of my address
and I confirmed it would be OK to telephone me on the number I rang from.

I was told it will be with me in 7 to 10 days.
For me, knowing I had phoned an official number and was not subject to "Phishing" as might occur on certain websites, was important.

Be very careful when renewing your EHIC card online, one method is free and the other charges £9.99 in admin charges, this is what I did without knowing that the renewal can be totally free. This site should clearly state up front that there is an alternative free service on the NHS site. I feel that I have been cheated out of £10 !!

Needed to renew.
Had a look on line. Use the wrong site and it'll cast you nearly a tenner a card ' admin charges'!
Decided to pick up the phone.
Approx 4 mins later - all done.
The whole thing is computerised but have your old card ready and respond loudly and clearly and you should have no bother. Brilliant!

I am going abroad in january and realised just before Christmas that my card would expire whilst I was away. I went online to find out what to do but decided to use the the telephone system to renew the card. I found it extremely quick and easy - and, I later found, very efficient. My replacement card was delivered on time and this was over the Christmas Holiday period and when the postal service and deliveries were having difficulties following the bad weather. Thank you.

To all the people who have (some rather too smugly for my liking !!) commented on ther ease with which they applied/renewed, consider yourselves very fortunate - you used the site at the odd time that it works ! For the rest of us, this site is embarrassingly unreliable. I have been trying (about half a dozen separate occasions) over the past week to renew, either online or by the automated phone option. Neither have been working, whether during work times or any other time.

Strangely, the only thing I have been able to do quite easily is register and post this message......bizarre.

Also very obvious that this message board is purely to low people to let off steam - no note of any positive action as a result of the various comments.

Oh well, I'm off to have another try at the incredibly complex, high-tech and very hard to design renewal process !

I am a non-EU national residing in the UK. I have scoured this website and others for information on how to apply. This website says that I must apply by post and provide proof that I am a legal resident of the UK, but it doesn't say what kind of documents they will accept as proof. I called the EHIC enqueries line, and the man I spoke to said I should send in as proof:
1) Photocopies of my passport - the information page and my visa
2) "Any other documents that I can think of that would prove my address: Letters addressed to me, etc".

The second requirement is a little too vague for my comfort, but I guess I will send in a few additional documents and hope they are acceptable.

As a suggestion to those in charge for the content of this website, it would make things a lot easier/clearer for non-EU nationals if you could provide a list of the specific documents required for non-EU nationals to apply for the EHIC card on this website. This would save us from having to call the EHIC help line to find out this information.

Postal may take longer, but with luck it will work. Get some web-page designers.

Given that to travel outside the UK we need a passport, why do we need the bureaucracy and cost of administering these EHIC cards and the hassle of having to remember to check another document that expires at a different time from the passport.
What is the problem with just using the passport for the purposes of European Health Insurance.

I am going to France tomorrow - only for a day trip, luckily. But it's only because I am going that I looked at my EHIC - and it runs out on 21/11/10. Surely a computerised system should be able to send out reminders?... And I agree with an earlier comment - if I have my card in front of me and only want to renew it with no change of details, then that should take one click after inputting the personal identification number...

From finding the website to completion took 6 minutes and some of that was because I'd mistyped so checked all my details carefully. Job done very easily. Considering its taking me another 6 mins to get to leave a comment, you can see that you've got to be pretty motivated to say something, so human nature being what it is, its likely to be a moan.

I managed to get through to the automated service, spent 10 minutes on the phone, only to be told , my replacement card would take 5 - 7 days to arrive. I then listened to the extra information given, and was given the Works and Pension number, that I can use whilst abroad. Great! I thought, problem solved -, that is, until I tried the telephone given (same number as the Newcastle helpline) - its not valid. Just hope I don't need any medical help whilst I'm abroad.

I see that my comment that the EHIC website is down again has been removed.
Presumably that means that the long-running failure of one part of the NHS to provide a service isn't of any significant interest or concern to the NHS Choices part of the NHS?
What's the point of seeking feedback if you ignore or don't share it?
I suggest your customers would prefer a positive approach which gives them realistic advice on what's actually available and shows that you are acting on feedback (even when the problem hasn't arisen at your end).
