Help and support

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is illegal in the UK. It is also illegal to arrange for a child to be taken abroad for FGM.

If you are worried that you or someone you know might be taken abroad for FGM, please call the police or local children’s services immediately. You can also ask a trusted adult such as a teacher or school nurse for advice first.

You can also obtain support from your Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) - there's one covering every local authority area.

Non-urgent advice for British nationals abroad can be obtained from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office helpline, on 020 7008 1500.

Right to choose: spotting the signs of forced marriage

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has launched a campaign to raise awareness about forced marriage and the help available to young people. The campaign includes three videos that should remind young people to speak up if they think they or someone they know are in danger.

FGM helpline  0800 028 3550

The NSPCC's FGM helpline is a free 24-hour service. Please ring if you are concerned that a child’s welfare is at risk because of FGM and are seeking advice, information or support. Though callers’ details can remain anonymous, any information that could protect a child from abuse will be passed to the police or social services.

A statement opposing FGM

The Statement Opposing FGM makes it clear that FGM is a serious criminal offence in the UK, with a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison for anyone found guilty of the offence. You should take this statement with you when you go abroad. You can show it to your family. Keep this statement in your passport, purse or wallet, which you should carry with you all the time.
