Contraceptive implant

The contraceptive implant is a small flexible tube that's inserted under the skin of your upper arm. It releases the hormone progestogen to prevent pregnancy. Find out how it works and how it might affect periods and fertility.

A woman can get pregnant if a man’s sperm reaches one of her eggs (ova). Contraception tries to stop this happening by keeping the egg and sperm apart or by stopping egg production. One method of contraception is the implant.

The implant is about 40mm long and contains progestogen.

Who can insert the implant?

The implant is inserted under the skin of your upper arm by a trained professional, such as a doctor. It lasts for three years.

You can have the implant removed at any time, and your natural fertility will return very quickly. This means that once the implant is removed, you could get pregnant as easily as if you'd never had the implant.

In the UK, implants inserted after October 2010 are called Nexplanon. Implants inserted before this are called Implanon. They work in the same way, but Nexplanon is designed to reduce the risk of insertion errors, and it's visible on an X-ray or CT scan. There's no need for existing Implanon users to have their implant removed and replaced by Nexplanon ahead of its usual replacement time.

How does the implant work?

The implant stops the release of an egg from the ovary by slowly releasing progestogen into your body. It thickens the cervical mucus and thins the womb lining. This makes it harder for sperm to move through your cervix, and less likely for your womb to accept a fertilised egg.

How effective is it?

If implanted correctly, it's more than 99% effective. Fewer than one woman in 1,000 will get pregnant in one year.

Added benefits?

  • It's very useful for women who know they don't want to get pregnant for a while. Once the implant is in place, you don't have to think about contraception for three years.
  • It can be useful for women who can't use contraception that contains oestrogen.
  • It's very useful for women who find it difficult to take a pill at the same time every day.
  • It is not affected by antibiotics.
  • If you have side effects, the implant can be taken out.

What else should I know about the implant?

  • When it's first put in, you may feel some bruising, tenderness or swelling around the implant.
  • In the first year after the implant is fitted, your periods may become irregular, lighter, heavier or longer. This usually settles down after the first year. Find out more about heavy periods and irregular periods.
  • A common side effect of the implant is that your periods stop (amenorrhoea). It's not harmful, but you may want to consider this before deciding to have an implant.
  • Some medicines, such as medication for HIV or epilepsy, or homeopathic remedies, such as St John's Wort, may reduce the implant's effectiveness. Ask your doctor for more details, or contact the FPA helpline on 0845 122 8690.
  • If you have any problems or questions, or you want the implant removed, see your doctor or nurse.

By using condoms as well as the implant, you'll help to protect yourself against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

I had the Implanon implant inserted in May 2010 and felt fine at first. I had irregular periods but they weren't heavy and didn't really last very long either so I wasn't complaining.

Then about 6 months after having it inserted I started to gain a lot of weight (up to nearly 2 stone!) and felt a bit depressed too. The depression got worse and worse and I was also having crazy mood swings that were affecting everyone around me.My periods are now very heavy and I suffer from really bad period pain (which I haven't suffered from since I was about 16).

It has taken nearly 2 years for me to realise that the implant might be the cause of my depression and within that time I have hit rock bottom emotionally and psychologically. I am going to a family planning clinic in a couple of weeks to have the implant removed and hopefully I'll start feeling better. I can't remember anyone telling me about these side effects before I had the implant inserted and I wish they had as I have never really been the most stable person.

Just wanted people to know that if they are feeling low and depressed then it's a good chance that it's because of the implant.

Link to NHS/MHRA website when in 2010 Nexplanon was supposed to replace Implanon: http://www.nelm.nhs.uk/en/NeLM-Area/News/2010---October/12/MHRA-Nexplanon-to-replace-the-Implanon-contraceptive-implant/

Think I'll be chaning to Nexplanon or the pill ASAP as I cant take the side effects of Implanon any more.

I had the implant (Dec 2010) - I had been on Microgynon for several years & thought it was disagreeing with me, I had suffered severe depression & OCD & thought changing contraception would be better & help me - it seems things have got worse, severely.
I inititally had no bleeding or at the most spotting for a few months which suited me fine but I noticed everything got worse & I developed anxiety & pain in my bones (arthritis rules out by GP) as well as severe heightened symptoms of PMT when I was due my period - which I couldnt predict when it was due. (I have had approx 5 horrendous periods which are ruining my life & I am going straight to the GP tomorrow as I am worried about also falling pregnant too. It also turns out Implanon isnt safe, if you look online you can see for yourself.
As one poster had said before & I am experiencing the same:
*Disrupted sleep
*Severe iron deficiancy (due to constant bleeding)
*Severe mood swings
*Moderate to severe OCD symptoms (I had mild OCD but the implant seems to have made it worse but I can't prove this as it could be a progression of the condition rather than the implant, but I feel it may have hand in it)
*paranoia
*Confusion/jumbled/odd thoughts
*Crying for no reason)
So please do not feel alone or assume you are being overly pre-menstrual, it is normal to feel bad-tempered or have mood swings as the NHS site & GP's will say but not to the extent of the above which I can see so many, including myself are experiencing with Implanon. Please see your GP or Family Planning Clinic for another source of contraception if this is causing you problems. I am going to stay off contraception for 1-2 months after having this removed to let my body get back to normal & try the other implant Nexplanon or go back on the pill.
I hope this helps, I am extremely disappointed in my Family Planning Clinic/GP for advising me with this when it was said to be not safe.

I had my implant inserted on the 22/6/2010 and since it has been inserted i havent had a single period, i didnt get moody or have any changes either within the first year and a bit.
Around 6 months ago i noticed that i was getting a little more hairy just pale hairs at first so it didnt bother me so much, the hairs grew darker so i opted for them waxing off. Then suddenly the hair grew on my face around my neck and chin, it also grew on my breasts and down my abdomen.
I knew then that it must have something to do with the implant, so i did abit of research and found out that you can develop excess hair.
I went to the doctors and we ruled out PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) as i had normal periods before i went on the implant.
I am due to have it out tomorrow whcih will be a shame as i havent had it in even 2 year and it has generally has been a good source of contraception.
I will give my body time to rest before i go on any other hormone contraception, i think its my bodys way of telling me that it needs to perform its natural functions!!

I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice.. I had my implant put in two years ago in april 2010.. After two whole blissful years of having no period, no spotting, no bleeding whatsoever i had a period yesterday. Is this normal? I know your periods can be irregular but as I've had absolutely nothing for two years it's very odd! Has anyone else experienced this? I'm more concerned that I'm still protected against pregnancy more so than having the period itself. Any advice would be welcomed.

hi i need some advice, my sons girlfriend had the implant over a year ago, but has gotten pregnant, we don;t know how far gone she is until she has a scan next week, however i'm worried if the implant could possibly harm the baby in anyway, the doctor never mentioned having it removed, but as the implant has failed to stop her getting pregnant surely its not working and should be removed, can anyone shed any light on this as i'm really worried.

I had my implant put in two years ago.
Before i have my implant, i had no pain nor stress during period. After implant, my period last at least a month, and making me feel really weak and VERY STRESSED (like i can cry for whole day for no reason.)
I can't cope with this any more as i am in uni and i cant get anything done with my emotions swinging all the time.
I made an appointment next, next monday with my doctor to take my implant out.
But implant is really really effective and i am not sure if pill will be as good? i cant afford to have a baby now. so i am kind of stuck in the middle? can anyone give me any suggestion?

Hey,
I had the Implanon bar inserted in January in Australia. I had continual light bleeding for two months and was going to have it taken out before it stopped altogether. When i was in Laos I had a fall down a mud bank and noticed that the bar now has a sharp bend in the middle. The day after I noticed I had a very dark, nearly black discharge, and this lasted a few days, the same a month later. I didn't worry about it too much as I figured that I hadn't had my period in months so this could explain it. When I got back to Aus in Sept I went to the doctor and had an ultrasound on my arm and was told that it was still very straight and there were no breaks (which would mean it was ineffective). Despite that I can easily feel a definite bend I accepted this and continued unprotected sex with my bf. Now I am in the UK, haven't had my period or any strange discharge since. I noticed a few weeks ago that my stomach has grown, it is not squishy but quite hard, I am normally very thin and struggle to put on weight, so now I am concerned, and am basically asking is it possible that i could be pregnant?

I'm 40 years old and I'm currently on my 3rd implant. Last 2 were Implanon and my current one Nexplanon was inserted in June 2011. I have just booked an appointment to have it removed. The first 2 implants were great, very light or no period and apart from a small weight gain, everything was fine. Then I got the Nexplanon. I changed almost overnight. Painfull, heavy periods that last for weeks, light bleeding for the rest of the time with maybe 1 or 2 clear days a month, cramps that feel like contractions and breast pain like you wouldn't believe. Terrible headaches every day, mood swings, argumentative, cry at the drop of a hat and huge huge weight gain. Roll on 12th March when I get my implant out and my husband and kids get me back again. I had Implanon inserted in June 2011. At first all was well, thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. I had no periods or side effects. Well so I thought. Since then the side effects I have experienced are:

* Acne (face, breast, back)
* Breast pain (had breasts examine twice/pain lasts weeks)
* Irregular periods
* Thrush
* Very emotional (feel like crying)
* Dizziness (every time I stand I feel whoozy)
* Nervousness (anything can set me off)
* Nausea (This comes and goes)
* Pain (breasts/legs/pubic bone/back)
* Tiredness (I could sleep all day)
* Back pain (severe lower back pain lasting weeks)
* Diarrhoea (on and off/could be worry?)
* Feeling anxious (thoughts of bad health)
* Hair overgrowth (Top lip)
* Muscle, joint and bonepain

And if the aboves not bad enough

* Paraesthesiae - pins and needles in face, left and right limbs (very frightening - admitted to a&e only to be told to see GP about getting implant removed.

I know not everyone will suffer these side effects but please note that if you do it can take a while for your gp to agree to remove it. I have had the implant for 8 months and for the past month and a half have been asking for it to be removed. They now say it might possibly be April. How do they expect me to look after my 2 kids and go to work when some days I cant walk.

Hi ladies, I just thought I'd post again, as its a year since my last post - and 1yr, 4mths since I had the implant inserted at the Roehampton Clinic in SW London, Oct'10.
As I said before the doc did a really good job with the insertion, a very quick, stress free procedure that left me with the smallest of marks.
I'm still incredibly happy with Implanon, last month I had a period that lasted a week - and I can't even recall the last time I had a real period like that! I had to go out and buy some tampons, because it had been that long! No periods is a side effect of the implant that I really, really like. It was fine, no cramps and no PMS, just feeling a bit 'needy' for a few days - as I used to when I was on the pill.
Since the insertion of Implanon, I've moved house and changed jobs, and it has been a stressful time, although I've felt down and strung out by the process, I believe its because of the move, not because of any mood swings brought about by the hormones. I've had blue times in my life before, so I was aware that I might struggle if the implant affected my moods, but I don't think it has.
I'm still struggling with my weight though. The 10lbs I put on after insertion have stayed, and after a full year of thinking that I could sort it with healthy eating (and failed), I'm back at Weight Watchers, and I'm interested to see if I will be able to return to my goal weight on the plan, or if Implanon will make losing the weight slower or harder. After all, WW has worked for me before, so we'll see. Saying that though, I've certainly not suffered the major weight gain others have described (2-3 stone).
So nearly 18 months in, I'm still 100% happy with my decision to try Implanon, and I would recommend to others. However, please, do a trial as I did- and try a 3 month 'bedding in' period on the pill with the same hormones as the implant first, then, if that feels good for you, give Implanon a try. You may find, like me, that its your dream contraceptive!

I had the implant inserted just over 2 years ago, as I was suffering from extremely bad period pains and overly heavy (yet short) periods, so much so I was fainting and could not stand up straight with pain. After looking at different forms of contraception that would help with this, I deided on the implant and I can honestly say I am so glad I chose it. I've had one, very light period since I had it, with next to no pain, and I dont suffer any pain before I am technically due on like I used to. The cons other people have mentioned havent happened with me as such, I have put a slight amount of weight on, but nothing upping my exercise and diet wont fix. I guess people have different reactions to things, but I wouldn't switch to another form of contraception as this does what I want it to do.

I'm just getting to the end of my 3 years with an Implanon implant. It's done it's job, ie I haven't fallen pregant, but I will be changing to another type of contraception now.

The worst thing has been my complete lack of routine with periods, sometimes there has been nothing for a couple of months, and sometimes it's been almost a constant light period for a couple of months. It's been so frustrating and sometimes distressing. It's also really unnerving to lose control of timings and I've been worried I wouldn't know if I was pregnant or not.

There have also been a couple of times that I was convinced I was pregnant, but this seems to be a common feeling (this was scary)

I also COMPLETLEY lost my sex drive- almost overnight I went from having a really healthy sex drive to feeling completely not fussed about it at all.

One good thing is that I didn't put on any weight (in fact I lost 3 stone, but due to healthy eating and exercise)

I had the Nexplanon implant about 4 months ago and I must admit it is great and there's no need to worry about forgetting to take your pill.

However, saying that I have recently started to have pain going from my armpit and under my boob on the side that the implant is in. It's not so painful that I feel I should go to the doctors yet but was wondering if anyone has had similar pains?

I'd never go back on the pill but would warn other women that it takes a while to get used to being able to feel it under your skin.

I've just had the implant replaced after already having had it for three years. It's definitely the best form of contraception I've used, plus in that time I've only had 3 or 4 periods which were really light and only lasted a day or two. I've still felt hormonal and moody at times but nothing much.

When I first had it put in it (first time round), my arm was sore and bruised for a few days but the scar was tiny and now is barely noticeable. I can only see it when I look hard for it. The removal was a little uncomfortable but not at all painful. It is feeling sore now but I was advised to take Ibuprofen which I am doing and it is reducing the ache. Will see how it feels when the bandage is taken off and see what the bruising is like.

I can't recommend the implant enough, I know a lot of people experience heavy bleeding but I was told that if the mini-pill (progesteron only) pill works for you, then the implant should too as it's similar hormone.

Hello
I have just had my implant replaced this week and I have to say I had Implanon for 3 years and think it is brilliant. I had 2 weeks period when I first had it inserted but no periods since with none of the side effects either. The replacement implant is Nexplanon which i believe is exactly the same but this can be detected on x-ray. I have to say I had a lot of bruising this time round and the removal was a bit painful as the nurse didnt let the anaesthetic take effect properly, but apart from that and the unsightly bruising which is starting to settle it is really good. The effects are different for every one but for me i have all the benefits.

hi, i got the implant put in in february 2011, this is what happened to me:
1) the first month i had no bleeding at all (which made sense seeing as i got the implant put in the day after my prior period had ended) and then had a period as normal
2) this period was normal but a few days after i began another very light 'period', this continued for a while, i had very little time when i was not bleeding although often it only appeared as it does towards the end of a period, it could sometimes be heavier although was never particularly 'heavy'
3) in july i went on holiday so got some hormal pills from the doc to stop the bleeding, this worked a dream and i didn't bleed for 2 weeks
4) after i came off these pills i had a very heavy bleed which then settled down to the light 'spotting' as before
5) towards september-time i got some very heavy bleeding until october
6) one day in october my periods just stopped altogether and i haven't had one since

all in all, i would say it was worth getting, the spotting was annoying but light enough so that most of the time it did not interfere with my sex life. i also had no other side effects and the procedure was simple and relatively painless.

my friend has a light 2 week period every 6-8 weeks on hers.

gweeny22 After reading your comment I thought i'd reply back because I felt the same way as you only I never craved twix :)
I got my contraceptive implant in 2010 in february I was 17 years old and I moved in with my partner in april and between then my periods were very irregular and would often vary not just from week to week but from day by day and as much as they say its normal and to be expected I was quite shocked and scared to see how much my body was changing.
I gained a lot of weight which I was warned about beforehand and I have struggled to get any off because my attitude towards food had then changed.

What I wanted to reassure you on was your lack of sex drive because after moving in with my partner I thought it would be fantastic to have a new start and looking forward to no pregnancy worries and just living together happily but I was very wrong. When it came to the bedroom I was just never interested which me and my partner found awkward because we've always had a healthy sex life and it soon started to concern us as its concerning you now but I assure you it should pass x I have nearly had my implant 2 years and our sex life was much better than when I first had the implant.
There are a few self concious issues I have which often hold me back some days but it helps when you communicate them wih your partner.
Try not to worry too much because its not forever and talk to your partner about the way you feel so he can understand that it frustrates you aswell. It helps to not think negative and always talk about how you feel.

I know the implant varies from person to person so your sex drive may return much quicker or could return a lot longer than others but it wont go away completely. Hang in there because you havent been alone in that subject and for a lot of us it went away as time went on xxx

I thought that the implant would be the easiest, most stress-free form of contraception for me. I never suited the pill - mainly because I forgot to take it a lot of the time, but also because it made me extremely moody and gave me abdominal pains.

However, I have been on the implant for a year now and the effects have not settled down yet. I have about four days a month where I'm NOT on my period. And my periods aren't exactly light either, which can't be healthy, and it gives me excruciating pains.
I have extreme mood swings, which have effectively caused me to become depressed again, which I spent years fighting. I sometimes think I'm becoming bipolar, it's that extreme.
Not to mention the fact that I have absolutely no sex drive what-so-ever. In fact, the very mention of sex seems to offend me now. It kind of defeats the object for having contraception really...

I had my implant put in 3 months ago and i bleed non stop for about a month and then the bleeding stopped and then about a week later i started bleeding again which i guessed was my period.
It was the most wired period i have ever had as i bleed so lightly that some times it was a waste of time even using a tampon and that lasted for around 2 weeks when i thought my period had stopped i would have light bleeding the next day.
But the bleeding stopped completely stopped about 3 weeks ago and ive been feeling like im pregnant apart from having morning sickness which is what i get really bad when i am pregnant. I cant stop craving chocolate well only twix its weird, and ive gained 8lbs.
Some that REALLY bothers me is that have 0% sex drive which is starting to become a problem with me and my partner as i dont even want him to touch me....has any one else had this problem? I'm not bother by wait gain and odd periods but my lack of sex drive worries me. :(

My implant sometimes aches for no apparent reason, my body does sometimes think its pregnant but that doesn't make any difference to me. I am a size 10 like I always have been, I am not pregnant so it's a winner to me. Like everyone says it all depends on your individual body but don't knock it til you've given it a chance.

Hi.
I got my implant 4 and half months ago now and haven't stopped bleeding since - sometimes lighter than other days but constant. I find i cry for almost no reason and feel depressed more frequently before and at littler things that wouldn't of bothered me in the past - i don't know if this is coincidence or not. I constantly feel slugish and unattractive. I also feel tired, like this process has gone on for too long. After recently splitting up with my boyfriend i'm starting to consider removing it as it is such a pain! but don't know if the bleeding will end soon or not. also quiet scared of possible impacts in the future?!
The inserting of the implant didn't hurt as much as expected and was quickly over just with some occasional aches for the rest of the day.

hope my experience helps anyone!

Hi there i had the implant in 2 months ago after having my first baby. In the short time i have had it in i have put on weight and have had to be extremely careful with what i eat and i run 3 miles plus, 4 times a week and still cnt loose all the weight i have gained. I am moody most of the time and seem to snap at almost anything which really is not like me at all. I have been to both my doctors and the family planning clinic and both refused to remove it and gave reasons that it cost money to put it in and that they want it in at least 6 months before considering taking it out. I am appalled with the way i have been treated. I pay my contributions to the nhs and it should be my decision to have it removed. instead i will have to wait and possibly out on more weight which puts my health at risk and in the long run will cost the nhs more money. i will have it out when they say i can but i really do not see what difference it will make if i have it out now or in a few months. What about my human rights!!!

I am on my 2nd implant (implanon), got my first when i was 18 and it has been brilliant, from the day i had it i have not had a period since! Can't even imagine having one now.
Many people here have talked of weight gain but that was not a problem with me, I was slightly underweight when i got it and continued to lose weight. have since put weight on but that's just due to me eating properly now! i'm also anaemic so is good not to be losing extra iron through a period. i can only say good things about the implant and plan to be on it until i want a family, and hopefully can go back on after! sorry to hear that's not the case for everyone, i guess it effects people in different ways and you wont know until you've tried it, but it is worth trying.

I was wondering if anyone can give me a bit of advice. I have recently made an appointment with my doctor to get the implant put in, and the appointment is made for around the time my period is due, to ensure I am not pregnant. However, i was just wondering, does the doctor actually check if you are on your period or does he take your word for it and get started? Im quite nervous (actually very nervous) about the whole process, I just want to get it over and done with. im naturally very shy and even going to the doctor about it in the first place freaked me out!!! any information about the whole process that anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated!!!

Iv had the implant since march after I got pregnant last year when using the pill. After having a termination I decided I wouldn't take the risk with the pill anymore. I started getting really bad acne so now I have to take a pill everyday for that. Iv put on weight, I get awful headaches but the most horrible thing the last few months is having the feeling I'm pregnant! I feel sick, faint, have painful boobs, even had the cramping without bleeding I had when I got pregnant.... its making me feel quite low and guilty because I'm getting so broody, I'm feeling quite emotional at the slightest thing aswell. However after all this moaning about the implant I couldn't go back to remembering a pill everyday! I just wish the pregnant feeling would go away as its making me extremely paranoid!

I have been on the implant for just over a year and for the first few months i thought it was great. Previous to getting the implant i was on the depo injection. I now think that the first few months were ok because of the injection still being in my system.

I have put on nearly 2 stone in a year, and find it very difficult to budge the weight. My sex drive has depleted. I find my mood to be very erratic, i can go from being happy as pie to feeling i could punch through a wall in an instant. I get really bad headaches almost everyday, and to top it all off I have been on my period non stop for the past 2 months, and prior to that i would come on whenever my body felt like it (everytime i did even a little bit of light exercise or got stressed), so i never knew when to expect to be on. i have also found that i get lots of spots on my cheeks, and a few on my back, when I used to have very clear skin.

I am getting the implant removed tomorrow, and I think i am going straight back onto the injection, but now thinking about it I can't remember what I was like when I was on the injection, so I might just give my body a rest for a few months!

I wouldn't recommend the implant, it is just too unpredictable.

Hello!

I had my first implant when I was 17. I have always been chubby and I have always been a bit depressive.

With the first implant over the space of about 3 months I went mental. Looking back I feel a bit sorry for my then boyfriend who had to put up with it. But on the other hand he probably had something to do with my unhappiness. I found that everything was heightened if I was happy I was beaming if I was sad I was depressed.

This I now think is quite natural your body is just coping with the higher hormone level. I would say to all of you who are dealing with the first few months to stick it out.

As for the weight I think if my yo-yo-ing is down to the implant I'll be happy to be shot of it. but truly I don't think it is to blame. I've been my thinnest and my fattest on this little stick thing. I think it is probably more to do with the initial mood swings that can occur in the first year.

In total I have had 6 years on the implant and I have loved it. I'm considering having a 3rd when my current one comes out in Dec. However I don't know if it affects my fertility long term. My current partner is worried about when happens when we DO want kids and I don't want to find out that I can't conceive.

I had nexplanon fitted in march straight from using the pill. The pill wasnt for me as after coming back from Sri Lanka I got ill and ended up pregnant. I didnt want a baby then neither did my patner so I had to do one of the hardest things ever!. I didnt want the coil or the injection so opted for the implant. At first was great periods were pretty much regular, lost half a stone, really happy. Then I startedc getting acne really badly, the doctor give me some antibiotics, which cleared it up well but I now have to remember to take it everyday longterm other wise my skin would be awful. I have also put on a stone which really gets me down. Im not fat size 12 but constantly feel fat. Another thing which really gets me down is the feeling that im pregnant. 3 different times iv done tests all negative but iv got the same feelings i did when i was pregnant even the bloated rounded stomach. I feel really broody now and get quite emotional over nothing but that never went away from being pregnant!. I dont want to have it removed as i dont have to do anything to prevent pregnancy but I hate constantly feeling like I do, I already feel guilty about what I did the last time. This just brings it all back and makes me constantly think what if!

I posted when I first had the implant inserted and said how wonderful it had been. I may have spoken too soon.

Since my last post I have had;
*Disrupted sleep
*Severe iron deficiancy (due to constant bleeding)
*Severe mood swings
*Moderate to severe OCD symptoms (I had mild OCD but the implant seems to have made it worse but I can't prove this as it could be a progression of the condition rather than the implant, but I feel it may have hand in it)
*paranoia
*Confusion/jumbled/odd thoughts
*Crying for no reason.

I am not sure how many of these are down to the implant, but I am not risking it. I had three fabulous months but from then on it has been a steady decline into what feels like me losing my mind. I asked my boyfriend if he could pinpoint when my behaviour became more irratic and he said about 7months in, but I had been trying to fight the symptoms from about 4/5months in. I am seeing the Family Planning Clinic tomorrow to discuss having it removed as I simply can't go on like this. Like I have said, it may not be the implant, but if it is, I want to get rid of it.

I will post again in a couple of weeks or months after it has been removed and let you know the results. Hopefully this may help people decide if it's for them. I think it was worth a try but not sure the massive dose of hormones worked for me.

Hi. My daughter had her implant removed last night due to massive weight gain - 3 stone over 7 months. She is prone to putting weight on but had been a steady weight for 2 years. Looking at other comments I think she's had the mood swings and hair loss due to the implant as well. I know some people have found it ok, but I would definitely be wary, especially if you're prone to weight gain. She is now left with stretch marks and low confidence and her BMI jumped from 27 to 38 in 7 months - that's a worry now. She has been given the mini-pill, as the nurse said that due to the weight gain it would be safer than the combined pill. I feel so sorry for her. If it can change your body so drastically in such a short space of time from the outside, god knows what's been going on inside. Fingers crossed the mini-pill will help. I read a comment about possible water retention. She has been needing the toilet all day today and has had stomache ache. I'm just hoping that's a good thing.

Hi all,

I wanted to comment again as per my previous comment on the 15th of September I am in my 3rd year, I have joined weight watchers and already lost 1 stone in a month even with my implant in, I have had a blood test and be giving the all clear, I think I was blaming the implant for alot of things and the doctor telling me it was preventing me from losing weight seems to be untrue and I have now proved him wrong.

I went to hospital today and I am having mine removed on the 5th of Dec, but having it replace with a new one, Im 27 and dont plan to have children with my boyfriend yet, we wouldnt be able to afford a child at the moment. but more than anything apart from the weight gain which Iam now losing the implant has been pretty good in my 3 years with it so far.

The doctor did say today if when I have the new implant I have bleeding for more than a week I should go back and also have a tablet to help stop the bleeding, in my 3 years with the implant I have only had abit of spotting which is good going as I use to have very heavy periods.

Good luck to those having it, im now looking forward to my next one (im rubbish taking pills so im happy with the implant) :D x

I had the implant inserted 3 months ago and so far it has been great. insertation was fine for me, the only stingy bit is the general anaesthetic for a second or two. I've had no weight gain or bad skin, or mood swings. i've had 1 or 2 periods and they have been at a normal amount and time, and my sex drive has increased! My friend also has it and it seems to be treating her well too.
i know i'm lucky, but just to show you it's not bad for everyone!

Thank you all for your comments - they have greatly reassured me that I am not alone! I had the implant fitted 4 months ago, and have been on a constant period since then (heavy) and am extremely lethargic, unmotivated and tired. I have been unhappy in my job for a while, and planned to job hunt/apply elsewhere, but since having the implant, I just cannot muster the strengh or motivation to do it. I know it seems easy blaming the implant, but I think it has made me depressed, as part of the reason I will not seek alternative employment is because I no longer believe in myself or my abilities, and often feel worthless. I am horrible to my boyfriend/argumentative and can never 'let things go.' Constant period has destroyed sex life. I really want it taken out, and to go back on the pill, but I fell pregnant several months back whilst on cilest, which resulted in a termination, which is why I opted for this form of contraception, as it is more effective. I am worried about going back on the pill, as I could not go through a termination again, but neither am I ready for motherhood. All in all, I feel the implant has changed me as a person, into someone I do not recognise or like. I want to feel like me again.

Hello all :)

I looked at this page before getting the implant myself, and it worried me out of my mind. At my age I just couldn't become pregnant, I'm not old enough and do not want a child so I had to find a method with a high chance of preventing that happening, this was the best option due to how long it lasts etc. However this page scared me due to all the bad reviews, but honestly, most people who have a good time with this implant don't bother to review, most people only review when bad things happen you see, so to anyone thinking of getting it:

I had my implant done 3 months ago, according to the doctor who inserted my implant the first 3 months are the worst however I've been fine. I hoped I was one of the lucky ones who didn't get a period, sadly not :( but I've had no bad experiences so far, I bleed for about 3/4 days twice a month but it's not heavy a all. No pains. The only side affect I had was an extremely mild case of dizziness for about 10 minutes each day for the first week or two, but since then I've forgotten about it more than I can remember! I don't even know it's there. My friend came to the clinic on the same day as I did and she decided to get the implant also, I've heard nothing but good reviews from her too. Honestly, anyone who's thinking of getting it, the bad reviews on here are only a handful of people who've had the implant, most people have good experiences with it. I'd recommend it any day of the week.

I hope I've helped :)

hi, i commented on here back in April about my implant this is just an update.

the first months i was quite optimistic about it,i had no problems really except slight bleeding on and off which wasn't to bad and the odd mood swing. anyway. about 3 months after having it fitted i began to become quite anxious, i suffer from anxiety anyway but the implant seemed to have increased it.

then came the bleeding non-stop. i knew before i had the implant fitted that it could either make me bleed or not at all, so i was kind of prepared but i wasn't prepared for the lack of energy and tiredness.

at the moment i bleed everyday sometimes heavy red blood and sometimes just lightly but the blood is a brownish colour like old blood. I often feel bloated and wouldn't be surprised if i have put on weight.

im still deciding weather or not to have it removed, though i would prefer to keep it as i am still in a stable relationship. I've tried to get an appointment at my sexual health clinic but at the moment its proving difficult because the place is being refurbished and is only open Monday mornings which i find appalling refurbishment or not.

from what I've read of the other comments people have gone through similar things and some have had no problems at all so it really just is how your body copes with the adjustment.

im hoping to get an appointment soon if not i shall have to go to my GP and see what they say.

i will update then.

I've had the Implant since June and had suspected there was a link between it and my recent health problems but until I read the comments on here I wasn't sure.
Thank God I'm not destined to be a sad, obese, psychotic spinster after all! The moods, the headaches, the loss of libido and definitely the weight gain all make sense now, I hate this thing and am having it removed ASAP but can anyone tell me if you lose the weight again? I stopped smoking a year ago but didn't put that much on till I had the implant, now Im a balloon. Is there light at the end of the tunnel?

I'm 28 years old and had mine inserted last September. After reading and watching several horror stories on Implanon, I opted to get it anyway. I had just gotten a new job after a period of umemployment and my free plan with planned parenthood was almost up so I figured I'd give it a shot. In spite of a bit of pain in the arm once the local anesthesia wore off, this has been great!

It's been a year and I've had my period only twice! Not only is my period very infrequent, but it's also very very light and lasts about 3 days. I've also lost weight due to the low dose of hormones. I've never been chubby, but in order to stay thin while on the pill, I had to curb my calorie intake and I don't have to do that with the implant. After 10 years on the pill, my metabolism has totally gone back to normal. Also there's the convenience factor of not having to take a pill every day and not having to use an alternate method when you realize you haven't taken it for a couple days.

The only thing that I don't like is that when I was on the pill, I never got pimples. I know this was due to the hormone dosage, so you can't have it all. As long as I drink my barley grass every day, I don't break out.

Overall, I've had an excellent experience with the implant. I know every body is different, but mine definitely agress with Implanon. After my 3 years is up, I'll likely be inserting a new one into my opposing arm : )

Hi all,
I am 27 and I have had the implant for 3 years now and had lots of ups and downs, at first it was great, cause I went from extremely heavy periods for 3-5days to nothing so for that alone it was a great idea at the time. But over the last year or so I have been getting more depressed due to the weight gain. At first I thought it was other factors in my life eg:stress, losing my job etc etc, but now I have a new job life is great with my boyfriend it made me start to think more deeply.
As im coming to the end of my 3 years it really makes you think if you want to go through it again or not.
I have become very depressed and moody due to gaining around 2.5 stone in the nearly 3 years, I go to the gym, walk the dog and im pretty active playing netball etc as well. But over the last few years I have lost the energy to do anything really and it has really affected my life.
Due to gaining the weight I am now on the verge of becoming diabetic even though I have been healthy over the years, I went to my doctor and he advised from all my side effects (blurry vision, headaches, needing to go to the toilet all the time etc) these are early signs of Diabetes. He advised that the implant is stopping me from losing the weight, I was all for the implant due to me hating to take pills and I didnt like the idea of the coil, but now I just want the weight to go back down, and the implant out, I want my energy back and my life back on track, its amazing how gaining weight can affect your whole life and daily routine.
The implant is good for some people but I feel the weight gain is a huge factor that they dont advise you enough on, my doctor said on average you can gain 10lbs per year (nealy a stone). I have to go to hospital to have it removed and they going to advise me on an alternative like the combi pill, which I hope helps.
Good luck to everyone x :) <3

I have been reading peoples comments on here, and to be honest I am so relieved.

I was on the pill (Cilest) for two years, but it didnt work for me, i was always concerned I would miss one. At the time a friend recommended the Implant. I went to the Doctors to talk about having it fitted. I have now had it for 10 months, and I cant believe how it has changed me.

Firstly - Weight Gain. I have gone from a petite size 10 to, a large 12, and at 5'2, it shows!! i know its easy to blame weight gain on things like this, but my diet and routines have not changed at all. I am relitivly healthy other then the odd boozy night, every now and then. But I went from 8st 10lb, to 10st 7lb and its devastating. Nothing fits any more and I dont even see the same person in the mirror. My skin is hurrendous, I get break outs all the time, when I never had any problems with my skin before.

Secondly - Mood Swings. I am more argumentative with my boyfriend. I NEVER used to argue or want to argue. I suffer more with anxiety, paranoia, low moods, more tearful then ever before, more snappy over things that would never have bothered me before.

Thirdly - Tiredness. I cant belive the lack of energy I have since having the implant fitted. Sometimes I can barely be bothered to walk up the 2 flights of stairs in my house. I used to be full of energy.

These have not gone un-noticed by my boyfriend. He often makes comments about my lack of energy, being more argumentative.

I had no idea the Implant was causing/could be causing all these things, and I was only informed of the positives by the doctor.

I feel alot more relieved that other girls are going through the same side effects. It has promted me to go and get the implant removed. I just want to get back to my old happy self again, and I feel like the implant dramatically changed me. Its great for preventing pregnancy as a contraceptive but the side effects for me are just not worth it :( x

Ever since getting the implant on 24/11/2010 it has been a nightmare! I mean it's great as of the fact you don't have the worry of forgetting to take the pill or having to meet a needle regularly but it has definitely not been suited for myself! I've put on two stone in weight (lost one stone now thanks to the gym! Lol.) But seriously I want to eat and still eat everything in sight it's like I can't control myself and if I do eat healthily all day I then come home and eat absolutely everything I can get my hands on! I've also not been able to deal with stress as well as I usually could I would then come home and eat everything! I've also been getting at people a LOT and I have no sex drive at all and for someone who is turning 21 soon this is upsetting and is causing problems for me and my partner which makes me so upset as I still love him so much and I am very much attracted to him, I would rather go to sleep or pig out than have sex! Before this I always wanted to have sex and after nearly a year of the implant I have decided to get it taken out in 3 days time, I also at first had really really bad cramps as if I was going to explode I was that bad I was coming home on the bus one day and had to curl up in a ball on the way home and hold in the tears and the bleeding was really heavy! I had to change a tampon every hour, I haven't had a period for three months now but this isn't the best contraceptive for me.

Hi all, I'm 23 and had my implant in on 13th December 2010 an since then I've had constant period give or take about 3 weeks at random intervals,I've been very tired, emotional an argumentative at times. But overall I'm not pregnant which Is why me and my partner thought this was the best one, I'm rubbish at remembering the pill an after having my daughter in Dec 2009 we wanted somethin long term, we don't use any other forms of contraception and this seems to be doin the job, like previous comments it varies with different people but it also takes time to settle in which will also vary, I would recommend the implant an will be having a second if were not ready for another baby, for all the younger females, you don't need consent from parents, it is private but talkin to your mums/dads would probably be a good idea, they would probably be glad your thinking first.

I've had the Implanon implant for about 2 years now. For the first year, maybe just over, I did not bleed at all. Then I had a light period for about 7 days; more spotting than an actaul period. Then for another year I was fine. However, about 3 weeks ago I got a period - still light but a period rather than spotting. This lasted about 7 days. Then at the weekend, I had a dark red/brown discharge and cramps. This eased up to spotting over the past few days but I am getting cramps again and still spotting.

Is this normal? I don't want to go to the doctor's just yet in case it's normal and I'll look silly and be wasting their time and my own.

I have also had a stomach bug and been rather run down over the past two weeks; is this connected or just unfortunate timing? I have had very tender breasts for about 2 months as well.

I googled abnormal bleeding and Chlamydia came up but I have been tested for that recently and it was negative. I have only had the one partner since that test (same partner as before the test) but am not currently having sex. Any ideas?

To all those who have switched from the combined pill to the implant!!

Im currently on the pill and it's not working for me because I keep missing it and I want something more long term. I've been on the pill for a year and tomorrow, i'm going to the family planning clinic to get the implant inserted.

It just so happens that yesterday was the last day of my pill pack so I can either take a break or carry on with the pill til tomorrow..
I dont know what to do, do I take a break or keep going so that when I get the implant i'm not on withdrawal? Please help?

I got the implant when I was fourteen because I didn't want an unplanned pregnancy. I've only ever been with one sexual partner and the implant seemed like my ideal form of contraception. I read up about the implant before having it fitted in and I was aware of the many side effects it could cause. It really does differ from person to person how it affects you. My mum had the implant and it affected her completely differently from me. I think I've had every single side effect it could possibly give you. I got it fitted in June 2010 and for the first month and a bit I was fine. I wasn't eating much and I seemed to have more of a sex drive, but I think that was down to the fact that I knew I was safe. But after that I started getting really severe mood swings and my depression really started to play up again. I was tired almost all of the time and had no motivation to doing anything, I had increased appetite, I was getting a new craving every month and I was spotting all of the time. I knew that the implant could make you feel like you were pregnant but I didn't think the side effects could be so strong. I wouldn't recommend you get the implant if you are already a grouchy or moody person, or if you have had problems with depression. I knew I was a moody person before I got it, but since then my moods have just got fifty times worst. It has caused me a lot of problems. I got really severe migraines which caused me dizzyness and nausea. There was one effect of the implant I did appreciate though; it made my boobs go up two sizes! I haven't put on weight anywhere else other than my boobs so that's a plus for me.

I had my implant fitted in september 2010 as i was started to have problems with my pill and did not want the risk of getting pregnant. I have to say i have good and things to say about the implant. 1 week after i had the implant fitted i had a period for 7 days but this was very light. Since then i have not had bleeding and its been nearly a year now which has been heaven. Also it stopped the painful period pains and stomach cramps

I have noted some side affects though. I tend to get grumpy over the most silly things and at shout my other half for no reason. also sometimes i will just burst into tears (very very rarely) for no reason. I dont have as much sex drive as i use to which can sometimes be a pain.

I some times get headaches and feel tired but nothing to really get my down.

This may sound bad to some people but i used to have such painful and heavy periods that i couldnt move or do anything.

Im very lucky to have such a brilliant partner who is very understandable with how i can be sometimes as he looked up the symptons with me when i looked into getting the implant.

Please dont let the above put you off as this affects everyone is a different ways.

Hope this helps for anyone who is considering the implant

I've had my implant for a month and so far its all positive. My GP had a lot of experience in putting in implants so there was no pain and very little bruising when it was inserted.

I had some pain in my lower right abdomen for a few days after (a bit like mid cycle pain) but it wasn't painful enough to go back to my GP.

Since then no problems. I normally have very short heavy periods which can interupt my regular life and leave me feeling run down but this month I've just had some light spotting (although for longer than my normal period). I'd be quite happy if all my periods were like this, or stopped altogether.

There are always more negative than postive comments on websites like these but my advice is to make an appointment with your GP and talk about the different contraceptives available so you can make an informed decision. My GP went through all options and made recommendations but left the final decision to me.

As time goes by I hope to add more comments so other people who are thinking about getting an implant can get as much information as possible about it and any side effects.

My experience of the implant has been really positive. I'm a student so I'm registered at an on-campus surgery where they're obviously very experienced at inserting implants and I actually felt nothing when it was inserted (only the local anaesthetic) I only had a bruise afterwards with absolutely no tenderness at all. I've had it for 18 months and had no periods at all, no bad period pains, no weight gain.. According to my flatmates, I was moody for a few days within the first month but apart from that I've been fine. I have found myself crying for no reason once or twice which I've read is a common side effect. I know that the implant can be very different for everyone but I would absolutely recommend it to anyone as it is a great long term contraceptive where you can live your life not worrying if you've taken your pill. One thing I would recommend is making sure your GP is experienced at inserting the implant as I have heard horror stories where a GP has never done one before and messed the whole thing up!

Hey there, am quite glad I have found this too, it is nice to get some reassurance!

I got the implant in April 2010. For the first 4 months I experienced a mix of quite bad mood swings, irregular periods and random moments of crying about nothing! I was expecting that though and things calmed down after the initial few months.

I really recommend that people talk to a doctor or someone at a sex clinic beforehand - I did, and although it is a bit unnerving I am so glad I did. It prepared me for the initial reactions and it was a real comfort to chat to someone who could answer all my questions and more. Don't always judge things by what you read online!

I am a little concerned about one thing though, and I'd appreciate it if anyone has an answer to this! Once the first few months were past, my periods became regular and much lighter which was great as I usually get quite bad period pains. However, in the last month or two, my periods (while still being light) are lasting much longer than usual...is this normal? Could it be stress related as at that time I was going through a lot of exams at uni?

I'd appreciate any reassurance from anyone who may have gone through the same thing!

To those who are considering getting the implant, I would recommend talking to a professional and just being prepared for a few rocky months initially - it does get better and it is a real relief to not have to worry about taking pills etc.

I’m glad I have found this forum too to know I’m not alone!
I got the implant november last year. I was on the pill (cilest) for about 6/7 years before that. Have always suffered really bad period pain so thought I would look into alternative contraception.

At first I was taking the pill with the implant to try and control my periods because I was just constantly bleeding. My periods then regulated about jan time so I stopped taking the pill jan/feb time. At first I thought the implant was great – my periods had seemed to stop altogether and I didn’t have as bad period pain anymore!

It’s not until the break up between me and my boyfriend that I’ve realised what it’s been doing to me.
I was arguing with him for no reason or for ridiculous things that shouldn’t have bothered me. I would just feel so wound up and like my blood was boiling that I couldn’t control what I did or said. I would also get upset and cry about nothing or the simplest of things! It’s led to us breaking up and I’m heartbroken :(

Thinking back I can see a lot of side effects here which I didn’t realise could be related to the implant. I have IBS which has been pretty bad recently I get bad stomach pains, cramps and bloating which could actually be related to the implant. (was taking medicine for ibs but didn’t seem to be working)

Have also been quite a panicky and stressed person recently (I just blamed stress at work) had no idea that could be linked to the implant as well. Other things that may be linked are headaches, feeling pretty down and crying a lot for no reason, dizziness, & anxiety.
The one thing I have found is that I haven’t put on weight on the implant and after jan/feb time I didn’t get anymore bleeding. Have any others been like this?

Also what I don’t get is how they know what dose of hormones are going into your body from the implant? Mean we are not all the same size and what might be ok for one person could be a huge overdose to the next person.

I recently got the implant but was too anxious on the day to ask the Dr anything and they wouldn't let my boyfriend in as it was a small room to ask anything and he's been very worried as he's alway been a bit of a hypochrondiac. Is there anything that would affect the implant other than epilepsy medication or St. Johns wart? Is there anything I should be careful about? We are planning on using condoms as well. Thank you.

I just wanted to add my experience with the implant. So many people have said negative things about it. It's different for all people, but I want to make sure that those unsure about it don't get completely put off by all the horror stories!

I have had the implant in for a year and a half. My boyfriend and I have been together for 5 years (I'm 23) and so we have tried out condoms, the pill and the implant. We used condoms to start with, and an "extra safe" one split. One morning-after-pill later, I went on the combined pill, but sometimes found it hard to deal with, and remember to bring everywhere with me, especially on holiday. I went to my local sexual health clinic and asked about the implant, and got it put in that day.

My experience: I hate needles, so didn't look, and it hurts slightly (nothing like giving blood! less than a blood test certainly). I had no bruise, and got rid of all the bad things from before: I have had no period since, no weight gain, no mood swings, no period or ovulation pain, no spots, no problems! The only change is my boobs have gone up a cup size so far. And are still growing. My bf and I are very happy about this side effect.

I would recommend the implant to anyone. It makes sex much more spontaneous and fun, and I dont have to worry about getting pregnant for 3 years. If after 6 months any side effects haven't disappeared, then get it taken out - and don't take no for an answer - its your choice and they have to abide by that. And if, like me, your periods stop and you stay on it because you find it good, take a pregnancy test every couple of months. I don't want to find out I'm pregnant 9 months in, and since I don't have periods tha'ts when I'd find out!

Good luck with whatever type of contraception you try. I would heavily recommend the implant. When mine is out I'm having another put in immediately - I love it!

To 1990rach1990,

Don't worry about the pain of getting it taken out. It's really not bad at all - less than the pain of having it put in. Just book an appointment with your GP and tell them you are booking to have an implant removed (as only certain people will be trained to do this). When you go in they will give you a local anaesthetic injection (this will hurt a little bit - just like a normal injection) and then you shouldn't be able to feel anything. They will make a tiny cut (about half a cm) next to your implant and then will pull it out. Obviously it might be more painful for some people than others but it's never been painful for me. Your arm will be a bit sore for a few days after but it just feels a bit like you've got a bruise - a bit sore but not really painful.

I have been on the implant for nine years now and had it replaced yesterday - taken out of one arm and a new one put in the other arm (they do this if you've had more than one in one arm to reduce the build up of scar tissue). I was in and out of the doctors in 20 mins and didn't feel any pain at all apart from the two anaesthetic injections. Now, the next morning, both arms are a bit sore (as the anaesthetic has worn off) but the one where I had it taken out just feels like I've got a little bruise there, and the one where I had it put in is a bit more painful but still not really bad at all.

I hope this helps put your mind at rest.

However, I did experience similar problems to you when I first started on the implant - no periods and then long heavy periods, but for me this settled down after the first year or so (and didn't get worse when I got it replaced each time).

I've now been using this for nine years and am now on my 4th implant. My periods now are normal - regular and quite light and I don't get period pains like I used to before I had the implant. Different things effect different people in different ways, but for me this is the ideal method of contraception.

Hi everyone!

I have had the implant, i got it out in on the 6-4-10 so for 1 year 3 months.

At first it was the best thing since sliced bread, now id rather had a baby than have this. Its horrible and the worst thing that i have ever done.

Although everyone is effected in different ways, i must be one of those unlucky ones.

I have been experiencing some, well most of the things that other have been going through.

In the last 7 months i have had 7 days off my period! I have 1 day off every month. I have the most worst mood swings ever causing me to be very very violent and before i would never hurt a fly. Also the pain is unbearable, its like being in labor or actually having a baby.

When i consulted my doctor about my pains i actually had the pain happen as i went to get up and my doctor then realized the pain i was having a fully grown male adult would not be able to stand the pain.

I want to get it taken out but i've been told it is so so so painfull and im actually really scared does any one know what the pain is like getting it taken out? please answer xx\

Thanks Guys xxx

I had the implant fitted in September last year (9 months ago) because the pill made me put on weight and I was told by my GP the implant was the best way to avoid the weight gain.

I have since then put on 2 stone in weight and its much harder to persuade someone to take it out than put it in.

Has anyone else experienced the weight problem?

This has been the best thing ever! I cant take the combined pill due to my migraines and the mini pill i bled on and off and hated it, so I thought id give it a try. I've had it in for 4 months now and no bleeding at all, my migraines have not got worse or better, but not getting worse was great. I'm on slimming world after having a baby and have lost 9lb so far so I dont think you put on weight and there has been no evidence to show that this does cause weight gain, and my moods are exactly the same. I love that it stops ovulation as I had really bad ovulation pain but this has gone. I did hurt a little when I had it put in, more the needle to numb it and I had a great big bruise that went away after a week, but it's great, I love it, It'll last until after my wedding in 2013 and I can have it taken out in time for my next baby. I know that different people have different reactions to contraceptive, but I say give it a chance xxx

I had my implant put in on the 9th May 2011 and it was the best thing I have ever done! Before deciding I wanted it done, I came on websites researching about it and some of the comments really do put you off - don't listen to them! The implant re-acts differently to different people.

Booking the appointment is very easy. You can go to your GP who will give you an appointment to have it done by a nurse or you can go to your local sexual health clinic (I went to my GP) It was not embarrasing in the slightest and they made me feel very at ease. Even when I went for the procedure, I was worrying about it - But once they start its completely painless, I didn't feel a thing!

I haven't experienced any side effects whatsoever. The only thing I did get, about 2 weeks afterwards was a water infection (whether this was due to the implant, i'm not sure!)

Having the implant makes sex so much easier aswell. I was previously on the pill and I was crap at taking it! Me and my boyfriend do still use condoms but it's nice knowing that the implant protects you in the case of not using one.

Just remember, don't let the bad experiences on these comments put you off - The implant is different in each case.

I hope this helps + hope more people go on the implant!

I had heavy bleeding for longer periods to begin with then at the start of may and mid may I had bleeding (spotting) for about four days and was very nausous. The bleeding wasn't heavy enough for a tampon etc. Now Im just exhausted alot of the time, nausous and have horrible mood swings - does anyone know is this because of the implant?! So many different comments here, Im not sure whether I should get it removed if thats what causing me to feel rubbish all the time!

I've had the implant for 7 months. Biggest mistake ever! I got it put it after a termination because at the time it seemed like the easiest option. Wrong!

The first three months were full of irregular bleeding so I went to the local sexual health clinic and told them I wanted it removed due to this reason and various mood swings. The doctor said it was too early but put me on the contraceptive pill and told me to take it for three months straight The bleeding between periods stopped straight away and when I got to the end of the final pack I had a period. Now its a week later and as the packs are all gone the irregular bleeding has started again! This means I'm going to have to go back again and do the same thing.

I wouldn't recommend this contraception to anyone. It has made me paranoid and into a nasty person with my boyfriend without meaning to be. I want the implant out but I know they will pressure me into keeping it in by saying it won't be cost effective if removed. Helpp! :(

I decided to get the implant to make my "first time" special, I thought it would be more romantic that way...

For the first month it worked well for me, I had a bit of period pain but nothing compared to what I would usually get, and no blood. Everything was fine until exactly 4 weeks after I had the implant fitted, that day I started a really heavy period which lasted a whole week and it's been on/off ever since (about 3 or 4 weeks now)

Sure, I still have time to get used to it properly but it's the emotional effects that are getting to me more; my boyfriend has told me how much more argumentative I've been and I get upset about things easier than before but that's nothing compared to the huge sexual need I've been experiencing, it was large before but I can't think of anytime recently when I haven't been "in the mood". It's awful, I'm always on my period but never wanna just curl up in bed like I used to... It really distracts me because it's always on my mind.

I haven't read anywhere else that this is the case, so I don't think it makes anyone else get like this... So apart from the emotional stuff, it's been bearable, I'd still recommend people try it if it fits their lifestyle the best, I don't think anything else would suit me... But I might have to consider options if things don't change for me.

Good luck to anyone thinking of getting the implant, I hope you get on with it (:

Over the last couple of weeks I have also started to feel sick at least once a day and I feel really emotional all the time.

I had my implant put in September 2010, and I looked at this page for patient reviews before having it done, which to be honest was no help. If you are thinking of having the implant, you won't know how you are going to react to it before having it done.

I found my periods became more frequent, but extremely light and not hurt. My sister reacted completely differently to it, having no periods at all! But you can also have longer, heavier ones..

It depends on each individual how you will react to it. I also found it didn't hurt at all, but if you don't like needles this probably isn't the contraceptive for you, as my friend was petrified when she had hers and found it hurt a lot more.

If considering the implant, you must look at all the side effects known, and think if you would be ok if any of these happened to you, as you won't really know until you've had it done.

It's been great for me as I now don't have to worry about other contraceptive, knowing this is going to protect against pregnancy - a relief for myself, my boyfriend and my mum!

Also - apparently it hurts having it taken out. As this is my first one I don't know how I will react to that. But surely the thought of being protected from pregnancy for three years is enough to counterract this - and any side effects that happen!

I am currently on the implant and i think its great, if you keep forgetting your pill don't continue to push your luck and get on something more safe. There is no correlation between getting the implant and wiegh gain, thats poeple just gaining wieght normally and just blaming it on their implant rather than their eating or lack of exercise. Also if your worriesd about your periods afterwards just ask your doctor for the pill and that will control your peroids for the first few months.

Hello!

After reading so many negative comments about the implant I feel stunned! I've had my implant for half a year while I've been working away. I decided it would be the right choice for now on a total whim before I left - so much so I didn't even have a trial on the chemical beforehand (which everyone should have and will give you a 3 week insight into how it might affect you).

Anyway, you've all read numerous identical accounts of the procedure, mine was the same. Caused a long period (about a month v. light) initially but has been completely amazing since! Haven't had a single period since.

I haven't had any of the symptoms above and if I had read the comments on here before I got the implant I would have probably changed my mind - but it suits me perfectly and I don't have a bad word to say on it.

I recommend to people considering the implant that it is likely people posting on here are unhappy with their implant and have been on this site to try and help them clarify if the problem is caused by the implant. So I'm trying to add a balanced perspective.

I say go for it! Without a doubt it's been the best decision regarding contraception I've ever made and remember, if it doesn't suit you just get it removed. No doctor has the right to refuse you that, although they may recommend perusing it in case your issues settle. I will probably continue getting the implant replaced as long as possible.

(P.S. Just don't go as crazy as me and have so much sex due to no periods with your long term boyfriend who you haven't seen for 6 months you give yourself honeymoon cystitis instead) ...

Date inserted: September 2009 (18 at the time).

Procedure: Took about 10/15 minutes because I was terrified. Anesthetic hurt as did the insertion of the implant. Only had minor bruising afterwards, nothing major.

Pros:
- Don't have to worry about any other forms of contraception. (Having never been on anything before the implant was my first choice).

- Lasts 3 years but you can have it taken out at any time if you wish to get pregnant.

- I've lost just over half a stone since having it in.

Cons:
- My periods are longer and heavier. Previously they lasted around 3 days and only came once a month.
Now they are every 2 weeks. Extremely heavy. Unbelievably painful.

- Major mood swings. I find the slightest thing irritates me and I get in a mood for no reason. I also find I want to cry yet theres no reason for me to do so.

- Sex drive varies. Some days I can be as keen as a beaver and others I never want it again.

Overall: Its different for everyone, however I wouldn't recommend it. This is simply because of how it affects your periods. I definitely won't be having another one inserted when this is taken out.

hi im on my 2nd implant which i had renewed feb just gone,my 2nd actually was very painful wen it was fitted,i found everytime i moved my arm in a certain way or lent on it one of the ends of the implant would stick through my skin and the pain would last awhile ...bit like a shock feeling.i ended up making my arm stiff from not dare moving it..in the end i went bak to my doctor who then explained that due to new inserting procedures that the implant had too be nearer to the skins surface,he said i wasnt the only person to complain about it but i should try and see how it is in acouple of weeks, well i still have the implant in it doesnt hurt anymore but i still have the side afeects which i have always had since my 1st implant.
i have gained so much weight .which is horrible seeing i had lost an awful lot before i decided to have an implant,i have mood swings, feel tired alot and i have noticed my hair has thinned too ,my periods have stopped as they did the first time round but wen they do come back they are very heavy..its everyones choice to have an implant and not everyones going to feel the same about side affects but if i wasnt so worried that i would fall pregnant again then id try something else as contraception but due to my age my doctor wont give me the pill again and im too young to be put forward to be sterlised.i hope my moans and groans about the implant havnt put anyone off but if theres one thing i can really say is that if you dont want to bang on the weight then be weiry of that side affect of the implant. oh and my sex drive has gone right down

I got the implant at the start of February this year, I had been taking microgynon for 4 months previous to this but hated having to remember to take a pill the same time every day. My GP told me the implant was a better option so I decided to give it a go.

I really, really, really wish I hadn't. I finished my pack of pills in an attempt to keep some normality to my period but since then I have had non stop bleeding, sometimes heavy sometimes light, but there has not been one single day I have been blood free.

My sex life has suffered greatly, I think I went a full month withholding sex from my boyfriend because I felt awful all the time.

I am always tired, in a bad mood, have bad skin now and have gained a lot of weight. I no longer feel good about myself and am so sick of all the bleeding.

Apparently the side affects should settle down a bit at the 6 month mark? I will be going back to the pill when I have this one remove, I would much rather take a pill everyday and be happy than have to deal with the misery of this thing.

i had my implant inplanted 28th may 2010 as i was advised by my consultant to stop using the injection. before the injection i was on the pill from the age of 15 to 19 which is when i went on the injection after finding out i suffer from endometriosis. I tried to stop the injection before and went on the pill but non of them seem to work for my body. i was then told about the implant and have had a terrile experience from day 1. Inserting the implant was not as straight forward as i was told. my arm was numb and the doctor tried to insert the implant which we thought hadnt worked so had to get another from the chemist. Tried it the second time on the same day but again thought that didnt work and then tried the 3rd time and thought that didnt work so my doctor advised to have the injection for the time being so i was still protected. over the weekend i was very ill and my doctor called me everyday to check my progress. I received a call from the head of family planning/gynae to see him urgently to only find out that not only i had the injection but i had all three implants in my arm. i had to have 2 removed and one was left under my instruction. i was still ill for months after as i still had the injection in my system (overload). The whole idea for the implant was to stop me from bleeding but i keep bleeding. Ive been taking the pill on top of my implant to stop the bleeding but this has not worked and i have been seeing the gp and the hospital for months. Ive gained weight with this as i was a size 8 and have jumped to a size 12. my sex drive is 0 because the way this makes me feel. if anyone else has gone through this and has advice please let me know or any other doctor because i feel like im talking to a brick wall. I cant go back on the injection as that was causing to many other health issues due to taking it for so long. i need the bleeding to stop as it is causing me endometriosis problems.

hi well I've had my implant in for 2 years now and have been with my bf for nearly a year and half, and we don't use any precautions apart from that, and i haven't got pregnant so far so all good. so i'm sure you will be fine it's 99% percent effective but everyone's body's different, But i am having the implant took out on the14th of this month. because my bleeding is irregular and always very heavy. it also gives me bad Mood swings and a bit of Depression. I shall be going to take the pill instead and shall keep you posted in a through months to let you all know if everything has gone back to normal like before i got the implant inserted.

I'm back with another update on how I'm finding the implant!

Well, everything is still going well 8 weeks after I had it fitted. I had no sign of a period for the first 5 or 6 weeks, but for the past fortnight I've had some light bleeding and spotting - nothing at all heavy, with no cramps or anything. It's stopped now, so if that's gonna be my periods I'm fine with that!

My mood has been absolutely fine - no anxiety, depression or weight gain like I had on the pill. I still love having the implant!

I'm a 15 year old girl and I'm in a stable relationship. Me and my boyfriend have been together for almost 2 years now and earlier this year we decided to take things further. I did a lot of research and went to go see a contraceptive expert before deciding that the implant was the best choice for me.

I've had the implant in for nearly a month now and I haven't suffered from a single side effect yet... I may have stopped having periods but that's not for certain right now.

I just want to reassure anyone reading these comments who is thinking of getting the implaint in; not everyone gets side effects. Infact, people who are posting messages about side effects on here are part of a small proportion of women with the implant. If it works well for you, you're not really going to post a comment about it on the nhs website are you? The comments on here were the only thing putting me off the implant but I'm glad I didn't get put off completely.

For me, the implant was painful putting in but that may be because I have a phobia of needles and they have to numb your arm first. But after I had it put in the bruising disappeared within 2 weeks and everything is fine unless you hit my arm hard.

So good luck to anyone getting the implant and I hope it goes aswell for you as it has done so far for me :)

Hi, I'm 18 and have had the contraceptive bar for 6 months now. Since I got it my boyfriend and I have also been using a condom, I know that the bar is very safe and so after much talking we'd like to try without a condom, But before we do I just wnt to ask someone who has the bar but uses no other form of contraception how thy are getting on by doing so? and also ask a very silly question, is it ok for him to stay in while coming? any reply would be much appreciated :)

I've had the implant now for 3 years and am just about to have a new one fitted.

I was useless on the pill and hated the thought of having injections every 3 months. Its been great to be able to forget about it

There is a tiny scare on my arm from when it was fitted but its hardly noticable.

The only other issue I've had is with my periods. They are still very irregular, sometimes I can go months without them and then have a heavy one buts its nothing major.

I reccomend this to the forgetful needle phobes :)

hi,
im 18 and i have had the implant now for about a month.
i had never really liked the thought of having a piece of plastic under my skin but after the 2 incidents i felt there was no better solution.

about 2 years ago the condom i was using split and i had to take the emergency pill. after that i was put on the pill and i hated it. it made me really sick so i stopped using it me and my boyfriend broke up so i didn't need it anyway. we got back together a few months later and continued to use a condom with no problems until a month ago, the condom we were using got stuck inside me and i tried and tried but couldn't get it out obviously i was no longer protected. so i went to my family planning clinic to have it removed after that the nurse went through some options with me and told me about the implant i decided it sounded OK and a week later i had it fitted.
its not a long procedure. you arm is numbed with an anesthetic and the implant is fitted.
a bandage is worn for 24hours. my arm felt bruised and swollen but nothing major. i spotted and still continue to as i have only had it a month obviously my body is still adjusting.

so far so good!!! it really is useful if your in a relationship as you dont have to worry though using condoms is still recommended to protect yourself against STIs. also you dont have to worry about taking pills everyday.

it can be unfitted anytime if you decide its not for you. your menstrual cycle will return to the way it was before you had it fitted.

i hope this was helpful!!! thanks for reading. :)

Hey,
I'm 18 and have had the implant for about 3 months now. I feel pregnant around january but wanted an abortion, after my first visit to the hospital I had a bad miscarriage. It was such a horrible experience that I vowed not to put myself through that so that's when I got the implant.

The procedure was a doddle. So quick but I felt uncomfortable as a few nurses wanted to watch the procedure. Like others have mentioned, it was bruised and a little bit swollen for about a month but now all that's left is a tiny scar.

Considering I've only had it a few months I think the implant is great. I haven't been on the pill so I can't really compare. I chose the implant because my relationship with my boyfriend started to get more serious, it was something we disuissed and agreed on.

I have found that I have light bleeding nearly everyday so far, some days it can get heavier and other days there is nothing. I guess its my body still adjusting to it but I'm still unsure. Any suggestions on this?

I've started loosing weight which is great but I'm sure whether to blame the gym or the implant. Since having it, I've felt a bit moody but it doesn't last long and I have cravings for chocolate frequently but deny myself it because I'm noticing the effects of loosing weight :) !

At the beginning , before the miscarriage, friends were all recommending the pill but I knew I would forget to take them. I'm glad I chose the implant as it gives you peace of mind for 3 years and spontaneous sex is always a plus point. I would highly recommend it but then again, its your personal choice and everyone might react to it differently :)

I'm 26 with no children and I'm in a long-term, stable relationship. I had my impant inserted 5 weeks ago and although it's early days, everything had been fantastic.

I am absolutely terrified of needles and pain, so the worst part of the whole thing was the insertion. The local anaesthetic did hurt, but after that I couldn't feel a thing. I didn't look because I would've fainted, but the whole thing took less than 10 minutes. I had a small bruise before I even left the clinic, but I bruise extremely easily. The bruise developed into quite a large and vivid mark but it faded after a couple of weeks.

I had the implant inserted during the final days of my period and I haven't had one since! Major plus point! I just hope that this continues.

My mood has been absolutely fine - I had problems with bad anxiety, depression and migraines on the pill and everything had been brilliant so far.

The best thing, apart from the lack of periods, has been the effect on my sex life. It has made everything so much more spontaneous, as we were using condoms before. As a result we're having more sex. Always a good thing :)

So far I love having an implant. I also love the fact that my fertility will return to normal as soon as it is removed; I hope to have children in the future so this is great.

I'll report back in a few weeks with another update :) x

hi i had my implant put in on the 5th of march 2009.
i had no problems when i first got it in for the first year then after a year when i got into a relationship i started feeling emotional and kept having mood swings but not to bad. in the end my and my partener at the time split up and i had a couple of other boyfriends after that but nothing serious, i had sex with someone and i started bleeding really bad during sex. i went to the clinic and the told me to do a test incase i had a STI but it came back clear. after that i got with my new partner and the second time we had sex i started bleeding again only for about 5 mins though. we have been together just over 6 months now and moved in together but i seem to be having really bad mood swings lately for nothing and getting all emotional, i have had it in just over 2 years and since 24th december i have been bleeding every couple of weeks and keep getting water infections, i went to my clinic to see if i could get it took out but they kept refusing to take it out dont know why it's my choice but then i went back and asked again and wasnt as nice to them like i was the past couple of times and they said they would take it out but i had to get swob tests took and stuff before they could take it out because of the bleeding they think i have a STI but i am really scared to go and i have put it off for a couple of months, i really want to know why i have started bleeding all of a sudden and how long will it take to fall pregnant after i get it took out, after reading most of these comments i have been getting pains shooting through my arm :/ does anyone know if the bleeding is normal or do i have an STI?

I had the implant fitted in February. I was not on the pill at the time, having had a break from it for a few months.

INSERTION
The local anaesthetic hurt a little, but only for about 10 seconds. I didn't watch what was happening when the implant was inserted, but didn't feel any pain at all, just a little bit of poking of the skin. I had assumed I would have a horrible long scar, but I only have a small, mosquito-bite size dot on my arm. Barely noticeable - I have shaving cuts which are worst! I can only faintly feel the implant in my arm - less prominent than the demonstration model I was shown by the Nurse. I had quite strong bruising for perhaps 3 weeks or so, but it wasn't painful. I had just come to the end of a period when I had the implant fitted, and seemed to briefly start again for 2 days the day after it was inserted. I've had one, weak, period since.

No miserable side-effects to mention really. A couple of tiny spots on my back. Slight itching to my arm atm (which I did wonder if it might by psychological - but a quick google has shown a few similar complaints.)

Based on my overwhelmingly positive experience, I would recommend the implant. My friends are certainly all interested now. It's so nice not having to think about contraception at all!

One thing I would think about is, if you are on the pill, the side effects of coming off of it. When I came off the pill I lost a lot of hair (not in a noticeable way - but so much came out when I brushed/washed it!). This lasted for a couple of months and concerned me quite a lot at first, but my hair has since recovered. I also had a terrible outbreak of spots, and I have very clear skin normally. This all lasted for three months or so. So if you are coming off the pill as you get the implant fitted, don't assume the side effects you get are from the implant - they may be from having stopped taking the pill!

But like loads of people who have allready commented since having it i have suffered with mood swings, headaches, loss of sex drive, and weight gain. i was a health 12 stone before having it (my idieal weight) but now weigh much more and none of my cloths fit me that well, and me and my partner of 4 years have nearly split up on numerous occaisions because of my extreme moodswings. My implant ran out in febuary this year but i have been unable to have it taken out because it has moved and my doctors cant find it! i hope this helps anyone considering having the implant :)

Hi,
I'm genuinely really surprised by the number of negative comments regarding the implant- I have nothing but positive things to say about it!
I'm 24 and this is the second time I've had the implant and would definitely recommend it-although like anything, it might not be for everyone. The first one I had fitted when I was 17 and kept it the full time until it was taken out when I was 20. During this time I had no problems at all- the only thing to note was that I had no periods for the first two years, then during the third year I had irregular ones of varying lengths, but this didn't really bother me.
After this, I went on the Depo injection until now- this was just for a change as I don't like to stick to the same contraception for too long just to give my body a break. I have recently got married and we will be trying to conceive in the the next 2-3 years (after I've finished uni). Knowing that Depo can take 18months or so to conceive after stopping it, I have had a new implant put in so fertility levels can return in the mean time. The only difference with the implant this time is that I found it far worse to have put in, this may be the difference between Implanon that I had last time and the Nexplanon this time as the device that puts the implant into place has been changed to prevent application problems.
I've now had my new one for a couple months, it is fully healed and comfortable and I have had no problems. I am not expecting to have periods as I didn't last time, but I know it is common to get irregular ones in the third year as I did last time.
Overall, I would highly recommend giving it a go- it's so easy, there are no pills to remember to take at the same time everyday so is ideal for people like me (I'm a student nurse and working shifts, so taking pills isn't easy!) and is also great as a form of contraception that enables your fertility levels to return very quickly after stopping.
From my experiences of it I'd say give it a go!

I originally went to my surgery to have the contraceptive injection. I spoke to a nurse who suggested the implant. I had always hated the idea of having something in my arm, under the skin but she gave me all the facts and some helpful leaflets. I gave it some serious thought and later that month decided to go for the implant.

INSERTION: The insertion only took about 10 minutes. The Dr numbed the area with a local anesthetic which was the worst bit as it stung a little. After that I could not feel a thing. They made a small cut and then inserted the implant and covered the area with a plaster.

It didn't feel as bad under the skin as I imagined. If you run your finger firmly over the area you can feel it but other than that I am unaware it's there. You really have to look for it if you want to feel it. All that is left from the insertion is a tiny scar like a pink dot.

The bruising was minimal and didn't stop me doing anything. For the most part I forgot it was there unless I knocked it.

3 months on: I have had the implant for 3 months and it has been fantastic. I am prone to being quite low and a little depressed and the regular hormones from the implant seem to have helped ease this. I still get a bit blue like many girls but nowhere near as much.

I have not had a period for 3 months. I had a small ammount of spotting at first but since then nothing, which has been a blessing as I was always in great pain once a month.

The sexual benefits have been great to. I am in a stable relationship so not having to stop for a condom or the risk of it splitting and having to take the morning after pill has been brilliant.

In short the benefits of the implant have been fantastic, not only the physical benefits but the emotional benefits have changed my life. I am so glad the nurse suggested it.

I would recommend anyone to at least give it a try. It can make things so much easier and I am so happy with mine!

Hello guys! I thought somebody may benefit from my input on the implant so here's my story. Origonally I was on the injection and it almost destroyed my relationship. By the end I was constantly moody, aggressive and emotional and so my doctor decided I obviously wasn't agreeing with the amount of progestorone I was having at once and suggested the implant. I had begun to put weight on with the injection and had never had a period on it. A year into the implant and my periods came back spasmodically and I'd put on a stone and a half. By the end of the third year I was having periods for two weeks at a time but decided to continue on with the implant as it was my only option. now 6 months in I am constantly on my period, tired and lethargic continuously and have been depressed and low for at least 2 years. I beleive contraception effects everyone in different ways and I would never tell anyone not to go on the implant but if you do... be prepared to be affected in some way and do something about it sooner rather than later. As so often is the way with contraception - you are usually the last one to know how much its affecting you. X x

since having the impant, i have suffered a very very heavy constant period since the day it was fitted. Along with the period, strong tummy cramps. I have also been very hormonal. My doctor advised me to take the pill for 3 months (as well as the impant) and hopefully this will stop my constant period and give me one a month. I rejected ths idea, as i was feeling very hormonal with just the implant, and i thought that both would be too mucvh of a hormonal overload! I am so glad i've had it removed and i am now going to take the pill.

I didn't get any major side effects in the first 2-3 months of having it in but have lately started getting quite bad pain in my upper arm where it was put in. My arm started off itching and now its turned painful. I was wondering if this is a fairly normal side effect and if anyone else has had this sort of problem :/

Thanks.

This is my second implant, i had my first one removed sep 08 after having it in a year, i hadn't had any really bad side effects,i bled every 3 months which was heavy (had to take medication to stop me bleeding though).
I had it removed so i could get pregnant, (this took 3 months to acheive) and so decided once my baby was born to have it put back in as it suited me and my lifestyle. That was oct 09 and i bled whenever it wanted, it could be every 5 days or every 2 months, at one point i bled for 2 hours every day for 2 weeks. THAT i could cope with, in the past few months i have bled any time i get stressed and it gets heavier and heavier, even medication wont stop it for long. I have had dizzy spells from blood loss as well. The doctor advises it being taken out, but there is no other option for me and my lifestyle except being sterilised.
I agree it can be fantastic when it all goes to plan, yes it hurts going in and out and the brusing is awful. But for the majority its living hell, i have never had so much pain and blood loss and thats coming from a woman who's had three ceasarean's and a m/c.
Hope this helps someone x

Hi guys

I had my implant fitted in July 2010, i thought tbh that it was great as i was having no periods etc, but now iv started noticing things and after reading most of these comments i think im at a conclusion it could be due to the implant. Heres my list

*Very emotional at the most silliest things
*Get very stressed out and snappy easily
*Cant really be bothered with sex
*Always tired and have hardly any energy (im 20 i should be full of life)
*And the main one, although i havent gained any weight im finding it extremely hard to loose weight and i really want to loose weight as its a big issue in my life just now

Tbh i think im going to get it removed and see if there are any improvements to the above

Hi everyone,

I got my implant fitted in April 2010 after being just plain unreliable taking the pill. I have been thinking about getting it removed for some time now. As it has changed my life and me as a person dramatically.
1. Mood swings
2. Becoming emotional for unexplained reasons and over silly things. Things that i would never get upset over before. Sometimes becoming so emotional i would just cry on my bed for periods of time. At one stage i felt so down, there were times when i wish someone would just take me away.
3.Aggression, feeling like i just wanna punch things and scream.
4. DRAMATIC weight gain. Before having my implant i was a lovely size 12 now i have piled on at least 1 stone maybe even 1.5 stone, i cant bring myself to weigh myself its just too upsetting. None of my jeans or trousers fit and i just feel plain upset about the way i look in clothes compared to how i used to look. This has caused my confidence to plummet.
5. Headaches sometimes so strong, feel as though my brain is gonna explode.
6. Spots, i get alot more spots now which i never used to get any,

My sex drive was lowered with my boyfriend, sex felt like a chore. It sounds sad but there was times i couldnt wait for it to finish and for him to get off me :( My boyfriend felt as though i didnt want him or feel the same as i didnt feel like showing him affection. It wasnt him it was just the way i felt, i had no explanation. I didnt know why. Because of the constant arguments, my aggressive moods, grumpiness, not being myself. Our long term relationship ended. For a long time i just thought it was me, but from reading everyone elses comments it seems like it is the Implanon Implant.

I just want to get the old me back again, the happy person i used to be, the person who wasnt so down all the time and most of all the figure and confidence i used to have. I feel like getting the implant removed will be one of the steps to achieving this.

I'm 18 and just had the implant fitted yesterday I have a massive bruise, persionally I don't think the precedure hurt, the numbing needle stung but apart from that was fine, I thought the implant would be really good for me because I get things like tonselitus alot and have to take penecilin to get rid of it and keep it away, however the penecillin stopped the pill from working (cerezette) also I suffer with migranes so thought the implant would be perfect, I did not look into it properly before having it fitted but now wish I did as I am now worried after Reading all of these comments which about 90% of are negative, I am going to wait and see if I get Any side effects or if it works out well for me, as I understand everyone is different,

I was just wondering if I do get bad side effects can I have the implant taken out straight away or is there a certain amount of time you have to wait till you can have it taken out? Does anyone know?

I have just had my second implant taken out today after 5 years. I haven't had any problems with it, i've had significant weight gain since having it but i did change my job around about the same time which involved a lot of food so I put the weight gain down to that, however i have struggled to lose weight (it has taken a year to lose 1 stone). I haven't had a period since having my first inplant, which was great (not looking forward to my first one in 5 years!)
When i had my first implant removed, they gave me a local anesthetic and then a small cut and push out the stick, however due to the weight gain it took her a while to find it and there was a lot of pushing and pulling on my arm. This time round however it took about 30 seconds to cut and take it out and that was it. It does hurt a bit a few hours later, but nothing too bad. Be prepared for the bruise that gets left behind and don't get it taken out if you have anything special planned where you show your arm as the bruise is really bad for about a week or so. I'm hoping that I will have more sucess with my weight loss now i have had it removed. Does anyone know how long after having it removed does it take for periods to start again? hope my post helps
:)

Hey Everyone, I thought that it may be useful to say about my experience with the implant. After having my son 3yrs ago i thought the implant was a great idea (having a reliable contraceptive that should prevent a 2nd pregnancy). However as a result i suffered so many problems. The first thing i noticed was weight gain i was a 12 stone once my son was born and i now weigh more than 15 stone. I eat more healthy and exercise more but i could not get rid of the weight as much as i tried. I also had servere migraines and my moods were affected in fact in April i was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and put on medication. I thought at this point it can not get any worse, but it did. My periods were so heavy and lasting for 3 weeks at a time off for 2 weeks and then back on. I put up with it for a long time because i thought maybe it would get better and then finally i had enough and went to have the implant taken out. I had three doctors try to locate the implant in my arm but could not, i then got referred to another clinic has an ultrasound scan on my arm, local anesthetic and had it cut out my arm which was pretty deep. I had to have internal and external stitches and have a deep horrible scar on my arm. I have since lost 7lb in weight, no migraines, periods back to normal and the best news i am no longer on my bipolar medication and feel myself again. I really do think the concept of the implant is great but the bad expereince put me completly off and so ive opted for the pill which i should have done in the first place.

I am 24, I had the implant put in in July 2010. It has now been almost 7 months and my periods are terrible.
Before the implant they were light and lasted 6 days maximum. Since having the implant my shortest one so far has been 12 days. This one started on 31/12/10 and is still ongoing! That's 24 days!

It disrupts my relationship with my boyfriend, my mood, my work, etc.

Is there anything I can take alongside the implant to calm my periods?

I thought i would write my story as this page helped me so much.
In september i got the implant after my doctor recommended it to me to help my ibs. the first month was great i had no period no mood swings, no problems at all. However at the end of october things suddenly changed and all of a sudden i was tearful at everything, lost my feelings for my boyfriend and couldnt eat i was so down. My period then came and i had it for 3 months straight.
As a result of this i went back to the doctors and was diagnosed with depression. I had no idea that it couldve been the implant that was doing this as my nurse said it wouldnt have done this until i found on this site that others were experiencing the same as me. Then decided after 3 months of being on anti depressants and not getting any better i decided to get it removed. However i went straight back on the pill and i am still depressed so im having to wait til the implant is out of my system and the pill has settled. but im hoping that i get better really soon as the strain im putting on my relationship with my boyfriend is so hard and my mothers constant worrying.

If your thinking about getting the implant please read the bad experiences as well as the good. then decide if you still want it or if you definatly need it as it seems that its 50/50 on if it works or not. i also would say that the doctors don't tell you about some of the side affects as they know less people would get it however after you have them they then say oh yeah that can happen.

I've had the implant in for almost 2 years and it's only been the last three months that I've had irregular bleeding in a continuous sense. My health adviser has suggested having the old one taken out a new one put in as the last year can some time be temperamental.

The insertion was no problem didn't feel a thing however, slightly worried about the removal, can anyone tell me what to expect? Anyone thinking of getting the implant I do recommend it, it takes some getting used to but once it's settled it is possibly one of the best methods. No period pains and light to non existent periods.

Thought I'd write on here as I've had my implant 3 years and I'm having it out next week!

I decided on an implant because I was useless at taking the pill, and my sister had also fallen pregnant on the pill! For having it fitted, they numb your arm so if you dont like needles look away! Doesnt take long and it was affective for me right from the start. I went to see a family planning nurse 6 weeks later as she said some girls bleed a lot but you can have tablets to stop this. I was fine! I've never had a period in all the time of having an implant. I had it fitted when I was 18 and I'm now 21, so I had no nights out clubbing on my period or stopping over at my boyfriends when I was on!

It really has been a brilliant 3 years and I'm sad to see it go! Cant decide whether I want another or not! As brilliant as no periods are I think I'm missing them, although they were very irregular and heavy! I'l probably be back to the Drs in 3 months time to have another implant fitted.

If anybodys had an implant removed Id love a response on that? I'm hoping for no pain! hahah

Hi all,

I got this implant fitted in january as I get migraines and had to come off the pill. As I don't have any children my doctor isn't too keen on me getting the coil fitted.
I bled continually for the first 6 months, then had maybe 2 days at a time period free before it started up again. At the start of August I started getting really bad indigestion, upper and lower abdominal pains, vomiting and bleeding from my back passage. After months of pills that never worked my doctor send me to the hospital last week for a colonoscopy and scan of my internal organs. I was told that with sedation and pain medication I wouldn't remember much of the colonoscopy. Wrong! It was extremely painful and I cried the whole way through. Afterwards the surgeon told me that she thinks that I have IBS caused by my implant which is why the procedure was so painful. I have to go to the doctors next week for the results of my scan and get proper medication. I've been popping painkillers and zantac like smarties this past while just to get through the day.
I'm lucky enough to have a pretty amazing boyfriend who has been there for me through this whole thing and even he told me to get the thing out. He's offered to get a vasectomy (neither of us want kids) and even to use condoms until then. A man offering to wear condoms! Wow! LOL!
Seriously though ladies, think very long and very hard before getting this implant fitted. I know it works for some people but my experience has been a year of absolute hell. Doctors should give us more information on side effects apart from mood swings, weight gain and skin issues. Which I never got by the way.

Hope this helps someone else. :)

Hi, I felt I needed to add my point of view here, - so many of these reviews seem negative - and I just don't feel that way about the implant!
After 9 yrs on the pill I was ready for a change, plus I'm quite forgetful, so I spoke to my NHS nurse and she told me the alternatives: coil, injection and implant. So I did some research on the net and chatted to her.
I've always had a high sex drive, and many who'd had the injection said they'd lost their libido, so I wasn't keen. I've never had kids and I also read that without being "stretched" by childbirth, insertion of the coil can be painful. That left Implanon.
My nurse said that I'd be best changing pills to the one with the same hormonal content of the implant and to try that for 3 months (the usual "bedding in" period of the implant) to see if I got along with it. In the 4 months I took that pill, I had 2 one week long periods and one 3 day bleed.
These hormones work by shedding and reducing the lining of the womb, so that you will be left with a much thinner lining, reducing the chance of pregnancy, hence the long bleeds when you first start.
I felt happy with my body's response to the new pill (and I recommend you try this system BEFORE getting the implant too!) so I went and had it inserted (done VERY well at the Roehampton walk-in clinic in London!)
I have now had it in for 2 months (from Oct 2010) and here's my response:
1. No periods! Bliss!
2. My skin is fairly normal for a 30 yr old, but would get spotty each time I had my period, but since I have no periods now - no spots!
3. No mood swings. No highs/lows/stress outs!
4. Sex drive is normal and dare I say it (since no one else has) my orgasms are so much more intense!
5. My weight is definitely UP! But its winter, I've been eating more and exercising less, I also usually do weight watchers but I haven't been, so my 8 pound weight gain could be the implant, but could also just be me!
6. I am VERY happy with my choice!

I am confused after reading this page.
Under 'benefits' I read "it's not affected by other medications."
But, in the section 'What else should I know?' it reads "Some medicines ... may reduce its effectiveness."
This is just another example of poorly written advice which should be eliminated by NHS choices website.

I've had the implant for nearly 2 years now. It has been great .. I stopped having periods completely! Didn't have any side effects to my knowledge. However just recently, i've started having periods every 2 weeks and not sure why this is!?!??? could it be that the implant is stopping working?????? I have no idea, seems a bit strange that I went so long without them, and now they're back :S. Anyone else had this issue??
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks :)

I'm 39 and have two children under 2. I also have PCOS and a family history of heart attacks so couldn't use the pill. After my second child was born I wanted to use something so I got the implant in June 2010.
I'm awfully sorry for the people who have had such an miserable time but I have not had any mood swings, spots, hair loss or loss of sex drive. The only thing is that I haven't lost weight after having the baby, but having PCOS means that I find it difficult to lose weight anyway. I've had a few very short periods, but the current one is the first time it's lasted longer than a day.
This has really worked for me, so it will for others as well. Look at the statistics to make an informed decision.

hey

i got my implant at the beginning of this year and at first it was brilliant the worse thing was the bruise from when i got it fitted which went down after a week or two didnt have a period for 3 months but since then i have had crippling period pain every month and recently my periods have come back and are extremely irregular .

after reading some of your comments im also beginning to think it maybe connected to other things going on in my life such as regular arguments and extreme mood swings with my boyfriend and changes in my personality i find myself getting extremely exmotional at things that would normally not bother me and our relationship is extremely strained

all though the implant is reliable at not getting you pregnant the side effects impact your day to day life to much to really think this is the best thing , im going to get my implant taken out as i think that its best for me , it may be different for other people.

Seriously considering getting the implant, I've been on the pill for about a year now and I'm terrible at remembering to take it, so naturally the implant seems like a good idea, I just have a few concerns,
My first concern is getting pregnant after it is taken out, 3 years just seems so permanent, & I would like to have children in the future, basically I'm scared it'll just leave me unable to have children. So some feedback would be wonderful
And my second concern is weight gain, its a big no no if I'm going to gain a lot of weight, so some feedback on that would be nice?
Thanks x

I have only just had the implant fitted and haven't had any issues as yet but just wanted to say that when I had it fitted my GP said that you can take the pill for a few months to regulate your periods and get them into a routine if you have problems with that. Thought this may be helpful to those of you suffering from long or irregular periods. So if you are having irregular or long periods or spotting, ask your GP if you can take the pill for a while and see if this sorts it before having it taken out.

I had my implant fitted in June 2010 and personally I think it's great! I was on the Depo injection for three years and decided to change to the Implanon because of the increased risk of osteoporosis, and also because I gained quite a bit of weight while on the injection, so I thought I'd see if changing would make a difference. I've noticed no major side effects and I haven't had a period on either the injection or the implant.

However my friend started on the Depo injections the same time I did, and she was on her period for almost a whole year, despite stopping the injections after the second one!

It's important to remember that everyone will react differently and that just because a lot of girls on here had bad experiences doesn't mean that you will.

I am surprised at the number of negative comments. I had the implant put in 6 months ago and have generally been pleased with it. I lost weight after having it in but I was traveling and very active but I dont think it made any difference to how I would usually be. I havn't had any mood swings (I dont think!) or any massive side effects. The only negative is I have long but light periods, 2-3 weeks sometimes (not always) with out a big gap in between - it makes it a more effective contraception though! This would be the only thing to make me remove it early but Im going to see if it settles down in the next few months. I have a lot of friends with the implant that have no periods and no side effects.

Hi Ladies,

From reading through your comments Mood Swings appear to be the biggest symptom of this implant! I had mine fitted about 1 n half years ago, it was a pretty straight forward procedure with no pain! I was feeling emotional for about two weeks afterwards and then i returned to normal! sex drive was normal too!

BUT

over this past year iv notoced slight weight gain of approx 1 to 1.5 stone : ( and my periods have been so irregular from day one! maybe lasting 3 weeks at a time!

having read through your comments i've realised that i've had enough, going to get it removed asap! i guess different things work for different people! x

I am now on my second implant. I had my 1st implant in over 3 years ago as i was on the depo injection, which was perfect for me, however i had to stop taking it as apparantly it can cause osteoperosis. I had no problems with the implant, no periods and no weight gain, except extreme mood swings to the point i thought i was losing my mind, aggresive and argumentitive especially when drinking alcohol and my relationship with my boyfriend was under serious strain. This went on for a full year i didn't realise it was my implant, i went to my doctor who suggested anti-depressants which i started taking but then stopped as i don't believe they are a good solution. after a year passed i went back to normal and for 2 years my implant was bliss so i had no hesitation in renewing it 6 months ago but i am right back to where i started, mood swings, being nasty and argumentative especially towards my boyfriend who, after the last experience, recognises and agrees that my attitude is a result of my implant. I am now considering having it removed as i know that this time round it could cost me my relationship and mental health, i am not prepared to put my boyfriend or myself through it again. I am actually frightened. I do not know what other form of contraception i can use. The pill makes me sick and i do not want the coil especially as i have not had children yet. I have 4 friends who have had the implant in and had it removed months later as they to suffered extreme mood swings.

Reading all of this I thought it would be a good idea to post some good comments about the implant as I have had a good experience with it.

I had it April 2010 and have had no problems with it. You cant feel a thing. The worst part is the actual injection to numb it, which, lets face it, is just a tiny prick.
They numb it and inject the implant in. (I didnt watch 'cause I hate watching needles go in.) It didnt hurt or bruise afterwards either although the bandage was a bit of a pain to keep on when I'm running round after my 13 month old (who is now 19 months).

I dont have a period (which is what I was hoping as I hate it!) and to begin with it was just spotting but now I only come on after I have had intercourse, and even then, it is only for a day or two, which doesnt bother me much.

I am planning to have it removed in December as my partner and I are planning to have another baby in September 2011.

I am just hoping I can conceive quickly like I did when I came off the pill last time.
And I also hope it will be the same again for me when I have it after my next child.

Hope this helps those of you who needed to see a good comment on the Implanon.

I've had the implant for 3 months now and I wish I never had it. I know they say it takes 3 months for the side effects to settle down but I've probably had every side effect going with this... Really bad mood swings, I've cried every day for the last three months, bad period pains, bleeding for 2 months... It's caused a lot of stress between me and my boyfriend and I haven't been myself. I've considering having it taken out soon as it's affected my life far too much. I can't wait to be myself again and stop having periods so me and my boyfriend can go back to our normal relationship.

I've been reading through the comments and it seems that quite a few people on here are having problems with the implant... There are obviously pro's and con's to getting this but you shouldnt be put off because of other peoples experiences, you should give it a go and you you may be fine.

Pro's: Last's 3 years, easily insterted by your GP, easily removed by your GP, painless, small and un-noticeable when inserted, quick restoration of fertility when taken out, you MAY have lighter periods or stop all together...

Con's: You MAY put on weight, You MAY have heavier/longer periods, your skin MIGHT get more oily and spotty, possible mood swings...

My advice is to give it a try, everyones different! =)

I have been so moody since having it in and my emotions are all over. I think I've had the grand total of about 4 days of no period since having it in. I have rang doctors today to arrange to get it removed. Really would not recommend it. I just cant wait to feel normal again and make my family life easy again. Good luck to all and please pay attention to all comments although it may be good for some people.

After reading all these comments I'm thinking of getting mine removed! I got the implant shortly after becoming a mother in june last year. Since then, my periods have been extremely irregular, painful and heavy and have lasted longer (sometimes up to 3 weeks!) My mood swings are terrible, my hair has been falling out everytime I wash it and my sex drive is non-existant. I thought, at first, that this was all due to me having a baby but after reading all these comments I'm pretty certain it's my choice of contreception!

I had my implant in on the 18th of december 2008. I had it took out on the 18 february 2010. There are many reasons i had it out,
1. I was having periods for up to 2 months.
2. Mood swings.
3. weight gain
4. lack of sex drive.
5. wanting to start a family

All of the above caused so much hastle and upset i asked to have my implant out on the 15th february 2009. I wass told i hadn't had it in for long enough and my body was still getting used to the changes. Two months later the side affects were gettin worse. I went back to have the implant out and was told by the head doctor it wasn't going to be possible for atleast another 3 months and so i went away with a box of pills to be taken everyday. These pills made me worse, i would wake up with a head ache and go to sleep with a migrane. I went back to the doctors crying and stressed and they finally decided a year after me asking to have it out that they would remove it. I am now not using a contraceptive and my life if getting back on track. Im still not expecting a baby but one day it will happen.

So this goes to show research about the implant befor hand. It's not all plain sailing. :)

I had the implant and only lasted 2 months due to constant bleeding, lack of sex drive and mood swings.

BE WARNED! I had the implant removed and was given the pill....HOWEVER i fell pregnant within a few days of having the implant removed!!

I am now pregnant. Although happy, this was unplanned and is completely unprepared for! When the Dr's tell you that it may take several months for ovaires to 'come out of slumber' do not take this as the gospel truth.

Hi there,
I have had the implant since September 2009. My son is now 2 1/2 years old. (Born Jan 2008)(I am now 28) I have always had the greatest amount of patience with my son. But since getting the implant, this has faltered almost month by month.

These are MY side effects;
- Serious Mood Swings (absolutely no explanation for them)
- Feeling down with no explanation
- Very short tempered with my poor son
- Very short tempered with my poor husband
- The most painful headaches, feel as though my brain is about to burst through my skull. (This NEVER occured before getting the implant.
- The feeling of 'RAGE'!! Where I could just scream or punch something (not someone :-) )
- There has been very little bleeding, which is a plus side.

So.....tomorrow, I am going to get it removed and hopefully I return to my normal happy, placid self.

May I also mention that my friend (Also 28) Had the implant 3 years ago. She described serious Mood Swings, Anger Issues and feeling down. She worked through it and seems to have reached the light at the end of the tunnel and is now having it replaced. But she has no children and its only her partner who had to put up with the aftermath of the dreaded implant.

Hiya All,
all i can say is oh my god, reading most of these comments, it could be me writing them. i had the implant in almost 3 years ago, after having the injection for several years and i had lots of side effects from it, i thought id try the implant, i was constantly on my peroid for about 6 months, for the 1st 2 months it was heavy and then it went light, i went to the family planning, to get it took out and they said i hav'nt give it enough time and wouldnt take it out, instead they gave me the pill to try and regulate the bleeding, which defeats the object. i have had loads of the side effects listed by other people, i just thought it was me, im constantly ill with headaches, feeling sick, aches and pains, and my sex drive is non-exsistant which has caused problems with my boyfriend, because neither of us knew why i had changed, when i do have sex its not enjoyable at all, and before having the implant in it was good. i am always emotional and cry for nothing, always stressed because i did not know why i would always be emotional, also i would become moody too and have mood swings. i wish i would of looked into this a lot sooner because it would of solved it all, instead i just put it down to stress from work and being tired. I was going to have another put in, in 2 weeks time but after reading this, im definately not, its like deja-vu. my boyfriend told me to look into side effects which i did, but after finding this site with comments, its made me know for sure that all these problems are caused through the implant....... i would say to anyone the irregular bleeding happens to nearly everyone, but if you have the other symptoms, have it out, because in my case, it ha not got any better, i cant wait to have it out and i will update on how things go.
Take care everyone xxxxx

They also increase fertility, I don't know if this makes it any easier for after the implant is removed, but still

I had the implant fitted almost a year ago, when my third child was a new baby. I regretted it almost straight away. My sex drive is almost non existant, and I feel down and moody most of the time. I've also had hair loss. I put this down to the baby, but perhaps not after reading these comments.
The only positive thing was no periods at all, but that all stopped a couple of months ago. I bled non stop for 6 weeks, stopped for 2 weeks, then started again 10 days ago. It's ridiculously heavy aswell - like post birth bleeding :-(. I'm trying to get an appointment to have it removed but really struggling.

I'm 18 and I've had the implant in for exactly two months today and it's been terrible.
Since I got it done (when I was on my period) I came off and thought great, because there's a lot of cases where your periods stop completely but no, I've been on ever since, heavily for a while then spotting then heavily again.
It's COMPLETELY killed my sex drive, and me and my boyfriend used to sleep together a lot, so obviously unhappy boyfriend, when we do sleep together I just want it to be over, it's almost like it's a chore, which it's most definitely not!
I've had constant mood swings, I've been snapping and shouting at my boyfriend a lot and because of my unstable moods it's making me upset about shouting at him; he really can't win!
I've also had a constant headache, which can range from a normal ache to a dehydrated sort of headache to a full on migraine. I've also had aches and pains since I've had the implant in, I don't know if these two symptoms are 100% the implant because I was quite prone to headaches anyway, but not for a full two months...
I haven't suffered the loss of hair or bad skin that some people have on here, thankfully, but the weight gain is a big problem, I have my boyfriend's sister's wedding next weekend and since the implant has been put in I can't even fit into my dress, which is also 100% more upsetting cause of my moods...

I'm wondering if:
1) anyone's had these problems and they've got better after the "3 month rule"?
2) anyone's taken the implant out and gone on the pill and it's been better?

I'm sick of these mood swings, I feel like it's a bit pointless having a boyfriend if you're just going to batter him with hormones all the time! I'm also snapping at my sister a lot too and it's really stressing everyone out.
The implant has definitely been a pain.

Thank you in advance x

I’m 24, 25 in November and I got the implant 1 and half years ago, after being on the injection for 6 years, thank god for not having an injection every 12 weeks! Usually only have light period about 2 months apart and its always old blood. I have been on now for the 3rd time this month (first 2 were the same as ever) this time its heavier than before and new blood and got a numb ache for the first time since starting my period when I was 14, is this normal? I know my body and it’s just very unlike it so I’m concerned. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello, I had my implant when my daughter was around 7months old. Its the best thing that ive done. Before having the implant I suffered quite badly with postnatal depression after having the implant fitted the depression went and I even was able to come off of my medication! I also find it very helpfull as im terrible at taking the pill which i did try and didnt get on with. I was able to have the implant and still be able to breastfeed. I did have irregular bleeding at first but now my periods have stoped completely! But I am a bit concerned about my periods stopping, does anyone know if this is normal?

Hi, just an update to my post on 8th June.
I had my implant taken out on the 27th June, best thing I have ever done. My sex drive returned to normal within a week, ( very happy husband!) ( the implant all but killed it) My hair is pretty much back to normal, and the best thing is what my 8 year old daughter said to me which was " I've got my mummy back" as I said in my previous post my patience for the children was all but gone due to the implant, I did check on the dosage of the implant and it is a high dosage to start then it dwindles to a "normal" level after a year or so. Yes everyone is different and not everyone is going to have the symptoms that are very often described on here, but would I consider another implant in future?? not on your life.

Hello. Iv just given birth to my 3rd child on 2nd June and as I am now the proud mother of 3 under 4's I'm not crazy enough to have another...just yet.
Am considering the implant but some of these comments are worrying me. I know each person is different, and could cope with a little weight gain I suppose, but really unsure on the mood swings and lack of sex drive as since this child (and for a short while before the pregnancy) my sex drive was pretty low anyway and may end up non existant!!
Im wondering how quickly have people returned to "normal" after having it removed? xx

Hello All,
first of all thankyou guys iv found this sight sooo useful!!

Here's my story!!!!!!

At the age of 16 I went on the pill I had to try many pills as none suited they made me really poorly, finally I found the perfect pill! 10 years later and I heard about the implant I thought WOW a contraceptive that I don't have to remember to take! So I went to the doctors and away we go the next week (dec 09) I had it fitted!! The nurse told me how amazing it was and how there's no side effects I thought BRILLIANT just the same as pill I'm on now except I don't have to take a tablet... Perfect!!! Before I had the implant fitted I was around 10 stone and a nice size 12, bubbly person always happy, lovely soft skin, never really ill and a very high sex drive!!

7 months later I'm a 12 and a half stone, none of my clothes fit me I'm depressed about my weight cos I'm hardly over eating yet the weight still keeps creeping on! I cry over the smallest things, I'm soooo emotional, I'm slightly depressed, I have no confidence anymore!! I have dry skin, I get head aches, my hair falls out a treat when I wash it, my nipples are sooo tender, and I have very low sex drive!!!!

I am going the doctors tomorrow to request they remove it asap!!! Can anyone in same position as me tell me how long it took them to loose the weight after they had implant removed? And if they had to fight the weight off or did it fall off? Someone has told me it's water retention n should loose weight within a month???

This is the worst thing I have ever done!!! I have never been this fat before in my life!!!!!

Im just wondering if anyone could help me, and tell me if its normal or not, because Im getting a little bit worried about this now.

Other than this, everything is fine. Ive lost some weight, i dont get any spots no more which is great :)

Hope someone can get back to me soon.

Hi,
Ive had the implant twice, 1st implant i had put in sept 07, 1st month and half i had very light bleeding constantly, which i did go to the doctors which informed me it should stop! soon after they did and didnt have periods.
Ive had my implant changed beginning of may 10 to a new one due to it will run out while im abroad, and again im bleeding very lightly so i do no that my body is just adjusting and hopfully will stop like before. I was a little bit more emotional for the 1st 2wks for the 2nd implant but now all back to normal!
Ive never experienced a loss in my sex drive (ive actually seemed to want it more), weight gain or even hair loss!

Personally the implant has been great for me, loved the idea of waking up and not worrying about having to take anything!

I know everyone is different but i would def recommened people to go and give it ago!

hi i actually keep getting told by my doc that the implant doesn't make you put on weight! But i have put on alot of weight , and i was a healthy size 12 and 9 stone before, i too am arguing with my hubbie and have no sex drive, my skins is terrible too. I also feel sad all the time, but this is my 3rd time having it and i didn't get this the first 2 times only this time, I'm just letting you all know that it maybe ok at first and even the first time you have it but it can do it at any time! I mean i know its supposed to protect from getting pregnant but whats the point if you have no sex drive and you keep crying , look terrible from spots and yes my hair keeps falling out too! :o( I'm going to have mine took out and i know its what's causing all these horrible symptoms too.

For the people who asked, its normal to have no periods and then all of a sudden have it for 3 months solid! So don't worry , you are ok! I'm speaking from almost 8 years experience!

To the person who said there's may of snapped, please go get it checked!

and poor you sarah sunshine!
Your experiences sound almost the same as mine, my first 2 implants were ok! apart from no periods! and not a very good sex drive! Then i had this one and its been in now for a year and i have never felt so ill, and i have never been this weight I'm almost 13 stone and not happy, my skins is terrible too! And i have had the experience of spotting all the time for months, of course my hubbie wasn't happy about that!
I think the doctor needs to realise that you want it out and its not up to them! what a cheek!! Tell them its not working and tell them if they don't remove it you will find a doctor who will! After reading all this i'm 100% that all my horrible things are down to the implant! I can deal with crap periods, But hair falling out and this severe weight gain and spots that i have never had in my life! I'm 33 so its not down to being a teen ! I'm getting it out now!!

Hi everyone!
I have had my implant in for almost 3 years now and am due to have it taken out in August. My opinion of it is mostly fab, you don't even know it's there and you don't have to worry about taking a pill. I also don't have periods anymore. My downsides are that I have put on a lot of weight, and I've also found I have practically zero sex drive! and I seem to be a lot moodier. A lot of people say these things are myths but I've only ever been like this since I've had it in.
When I have it taken out I am completely unsure wether to have another one put in or to try the pill instead to see if it raises my sex drive and I lose any weight?!
If anyone has any opinions on this it would be great to hear from you as I am totally unsure which route to go down!?

Thanks :)

Hello, i am 18 and i thought i would give my story about the implant. I got with my boyfriend in 08 and at the time was on the pill, however i am a very forgetful person and kept forgetting to take my pill which was bad because we had a lot of sex and didnt use condoms.
I heard about the implant and it sounded great! I didnt have to worry about taking my pill ! So in may 09 i got the implant. It didnt really hurt i just felt pressure when she was puttin it in.
My periods stayed more or less the same for the first 3 months and then became lighter and lighter and i had my last period in october 09. I put on some weight i went up a dress size and i started to get tiny little spots that were underneath the skin and my skin became quite greasy. I started get really bad mood swings without realising, like id start snapping at my boyfriend for no reason and i started being really horrible to him. I started feeling down and stressed all the time and the worst thing was my confidence and my libido dropped completely like it was very rare for me and my boyfriend to have sex! Which killed me because i love having sex with him but i just didnt want it and it got so stressful for both of us because i didnt know why i was acting that way and he couldnt handle it so he ended things because it was making him unhappy. I then decided to get my implant removed.
I got it removed may this year, i got a period the day after which lasted about a week but my periods normally last a week so it wasnt any different and within two days of having it removed i felt soo much better! I elt like myself again i started craving sex and i felt more happier and i wasnt stressed or upset anymore and i couldnt believe it was just that little implant that made such a huge differenct to my body. I got back with my boyfriend a week ago and we have already had sex 5 times!
I still would recommend the implant because everyone is different and you wont know unless you try!

This is my second implant, I had the first one done 3 weeks after my daughter was born in 2007. at first my hair started falling out at an alarming rate, which I put down to just having a baby and hormone changes etc... my periods were up the wall, I could bleed for 3 months at a time, stop for 2 weeks then start again, Nightmare, but after persevering for about a year, it settled down, so when it was time to have it removed and a new one put in I didn't hesitate, but boy am I regretting it now, My hair has started falling out again, my periods are again all over the place, think I'm on my 3rd week of bleeding now, I have started getting spots which I never suffered from before, and I have now come to the conclusion that it is in fact due to the implant and my poor husband has to put up with the mood swings which are quite bad, as I can't explain why I'm in a mood, because there is no reason for it, plus my patience for the children is very short. I can't wait to have this thing out and get my life back.

I have also put on a stone.I go to the gym about 4 times a week and eat healthily but the stone wont budge. Im thinking of going on to the pill instead to see how i respond to that.
It didnt hurt when i had it put in. you just feel a bit of proding. Any ideas what is the best pill to go on?

Hiya im 17 my mum had me get the implant because i was scared to take the pill because my friends had all put so much weight on with it, so when we went to the family planning clinic the first thing i asked was would i put on weight and they told me i wouldn't, LIES i went from a 9 stone to almost 12 in less than a year, also i get really bad migrains that sometimes keep me up at nights, ive also got loads of stretch marks on my legs and stomach and arms, im depressed now because of the weight gain, i also get alot of spots now which i never got. My periods r never on time and when i do eventually get them they last nearly 2 months im spendin so much money on tampons!! lol, i get very upset i cry at everything and think every thing is the end of the world but before i got the implant i was just a very bubbly confident person who always looked on the bright side but now i just cant. i am going on thursday to have the implant removed and am now scared about gaining more weight with the pill. & reading above a girl said she couldn have hers removed because they said she never gave it a go =/ i have gave it a go and its gave me almost 3 stone! so i hope they let me get it out. i have no confidence in myself or my body now and its all down to this implant it was the worst thing ive ever done getting it put in! if i wanted stretch marks and a belly i would have got pregnant! i hope ive helped some people :)

I've literally just this second had my implant taken out after 4 months to start trying for a baby - been told and read that fertility comes back instantly but the nurse that just took mine out says a minimum of 2 weeks for ovaries to come out of their slumber but for some it can come back sooner or later.

Hi, Spongebex. Everybodys different so you may put on some weight but then again you might not. I have put on about 1 and a half stone since I had it put in, but I know a friend who hasn't put any weight on. My mood swing haven't changed, I still get upset about small things when I should have my period but nothing major. Give it ago and if your not happy you can always get it taken out. Good luck. Stacey1991 Xx

Hi, Domdidom. Get it removed a few days before you want to start trying. My friend had hers taken out on the 11th February 2010 and did a test on the 19th and it was positive. She falls pregnant easily though ( this is her 2nd child ) so that may be why she fell pregnant so quickly, but it just shows you do become fertile again very quickly. Hope this helps and good luck for when you start trying. Stacey1991 Xx

When is the best time to get it taken out? How long does it take your body to get back to normal? Doctors say your fertile instantly but am not convinced.

Hi All,
After bad reaction to the pill and my general forgetfulness, I have decided to get the implant. But before i go to get it done, just have a few questions.

I'm 21 and weigh about 7.3 stone and i'm only 5''2, i dont put weight on easily due to high metabolism and wouldnt mind putting on a few pounds, but what are the chances of me pilling on a couple of stone?? Also, a little worried about mood swings.

Should i just go ahead and try it, steer clear or not worry??

Thanks all!

Hello, i wondered if someone could help me. I was on dianette for about 6 years with no problems at all, but towards the end i got terrible migraines. Last year they put me on the injection, its great apart from i've put on a stone in one year! and my eating habbits haven't changed at all if anything i'm eating healthier. I'm now getting the implant in next because of this, i'm really worried i will put on weight with this as well. Has anyone changed from the injection to the implant and do you think if i put on weight with the injection the same will happen with the implant? the Dr told me the implant would be minimal weight gain compared to the injection but i'm not so sure.

Thanks

I was on the pill for 7 years before my family planning nurse said it was time to change (as after 8 years on the pill there are no longer any health benefits aparently?) and thank god because the pill gave me terrible pmt (crying for no reason, water retention, etc etc blah la la) so I opted for the implant. Had it put in on 8th january and was given the pill to take for the first week just to cover me whilst the implant got settled in. For the first week or so I just spotted which I felt was a bit of a pain, but I obviously wasn't prepared for the further month and a bit of terrible heavy bleeding.. it cost me an arm and a leg in tampons, lol. But after that I had a little bit more of spotting for a week and now 2 months on i've not had a period at all. Typically my husband and I have decided we want to TTC so i'm having it removed a week on friday. The only side affect i'm having now is spots which isn't totally ruining my life but when they break out they go for it. Much better experience than being on the pill, though after/if I do manage to have a baby I might opt for the coil as i've heard magic things about it.

Iv'e recently been back to my doctors and they put me back on the pill to control my periods aswell as having the implant put in,
but now i am scared that its too many hormones and i'll get really spotty or fat or something! Haha,

Hello there, I am coming up for 19 and have had the implant for just over a year. I decided to get it as the relationship I am in was becoming more serious and neither me or my partner were ready to be parents and I was still a student and hoping to go to Uni this year. Like everybody says everyone will be different, but you won't know until you try it. You may be put off having the implant because of what everybody says (I nearly was) but when I got it, it was painless. I was surprised it didn't hurt at all. I even asked my GP if he'd even put the implant in yet. I still get periods, every 4 months, which I am very happy with. Also 3 years is a long time that you don't have to worry about contraception. I was on the Pill for a year before, and I was useless at remembering to take it. My advice is, give it a go. You never know, you might not have any of the symptoms that other people have. Dont get put off because of what everybody says, we are all different. And if you don't like it, you can just get it removed and use another kind of contraception. I would reccommend it, but only because I am happy with the way it is for me. If you want to ask any questions feel free, I will check this regularly.

Hi,
I will have had my implant for 2 years this coming november and i have had no problems with it at all. My periods are irregular but are so light and only every 2 to 3 months so the irregularity doesnt really bother me. I know this sort of comment section is for people to encourage or discourage those who are considering getting an implant but im not going to do this as its very apparent it works differently for everyone. Its the same with other forms of contraception as my friend was on the pill for a long time to combat heavy periods but all it did was make her gain over 2 stone where as now she gets the jag and it works great for her even though the jag is known for making people gain weight. What I will say is a really good advantage of the implant is that you get it put in(which is quick and painless) and then you dont have to worry about it for 3 years, no taking pills or trips to the doctors every 3 months to get a jag in your bum lol.

ive had the implant in for a full three years now imgetting it taken out in 3 weeks because meand my husband are going to try for a baby.

I would definatelty reccommend it, before i got it put i had a really heavy flow, so heavy that i was feeling faint quite regularly i dreaded each cycle. when i got the implant in it changed dramatically, my flow is so much lighter there are a day or two extra in length but i can live with that. as i never felt faint any more. the cycle itself has increased a week in length from 30 days to approx 35-36 days. they are regualr as clockwork every month i am never late now and its great that i have dont have to worry about the pill as im so busy i always forgot to take it, and the implant is so invisible i often forget its there. my husband is pleased as he neverhas to remind me to take my pill. although it is different with everyone and when im ready for using it again i dont know how it will react but i dont mind cos i know it is a good idea and very useful especially as i have a busy life. good luck to all and i hope this helps everyone considering it. i will let everyone know how i getone when ot comes out.

Hi,
Just thought I'd let you know of the experience I am going through at the moment. My 16 yr old daugher has been in a relationship with her bf for over a yr and decided on the implant. I went with her to have this done, it was painless and she was fine, all was ok for a while. Probably the wrong time to have this implant really as she has her exams in a few months and is stressing over these. Now she could just be a moody teenager but we are close and I have seen a dramatic change in her. She was given the pill form of this impant which she took for about 2 mths prior to having the impant fitted, so it has been about 3 mths now and the side effects are kicking in big time. Not much bleeding, just spotting which if this is all it was we could cope with. She has really bad depression, crys all the time at the littlest of things, eats constantly so is piling the weight on. Every little thing that goes wrong is major at the moment and really does make a mountain out of a mole hill. She has bad headaches and has trouble sleeping (this never used to be a problem I could never get her out of bed). She has split from her bf cause in her eyes he can do no right, they are now just friends!!!! bless him he said he didn;t know what he'd done wrong but just wanted her in his life, so would settle for this. She has had a major row on most of her friends who are all telling her she has changed and is moody all the time - which she is. She also told me last week that she had started cutting herself, it broke my heart to see her arm, what a mess. Now there is no proof that the implant has caused all this and I dare say some of it is down to be a teenager, but this is not my daughter and it has to take some of the blame, especially after reading on the intranet the side effects. I've asked her to have it taken out but she wants to give it a chance and try and beat the side effects, which she now ack. My advice would be don't have it, try something else.

I have had the implant in for about 10 months now. I kept forgetting to take my pill and thought the implant sounded great... i was wrong. I have been having 2-3 periods a month since it was first inserted and its really starting to get me down. Im considering getting it taken out but dont know what else to try. I could not handle the mood swings that the pill gave me and all other options (apart from sterilisation) seem to produce the same side effects. Help!!

Hi,
Ive had the Implant in for nearly 2 years now on June '08. I rang up the Family Planning Assocation and they were able to get me an appointment. They said the best time to get it placed into my arm would be the last day of my period, so luckily they got me sorted with for that day. They said it would take affect from the day it goes in because of this.

It didn't even take long to be placed in, a few seconds and thats it! Afterwards my arm just felt a bit funny like stiff but that was it. I couldn't believe I had got it in, I couldnt even bare to touch it! (I still cant lol). But I know its there because it gives a wee sting now and then saying 'im still here' lol.

When i got it inserted I was fine for a month or 2, but then after that I bleed lightly for 2 months or more none stop so thought of gettin it removed. A friend of mine had it in but told me to give it 6 months to settle in, so i thought i'll wait and see. When the bleeding had eased, I then had 2 periods a month for about 4 months. Now I still have it in and havn't had a period in nearly 14 months. I think it is just staying away because of all the hassle it gave me. I even went to the doctors for some advice of why it hasnt came in a long time, but he said its what the implant can do AND my menstrual cycle will return to normal when its removed!

But I would recommend it to anyone because everyone is different. I would never remember to take the pill so the implant is better for me. The only effects it gives me now would probably be craving for a lot of chocolate! lol but I havn't gained any weight so I know I couldn't be pregnant. I'll just give u a wee tip, make sure and use other percautions such as the condoms if you ever take anti-botics or other tablets so u definitely wont fall pregnant because u wont be protected!! Also take extra percautions for 4 weeks before gettin the implant removed or you may fall pregnant..

i had the implant march 2008 and have found it amazing
for the first year i had no periods which was a good send
my second year ive had irrigular light periods
i didnt get spots, i did put weight on but its all about self control , its simple and easy because i dont have to remember to take a pill, ive had no problems ive got one year left and i plan to have another one put back in, having it put in didnt hurt either just like a injection, best contraception other than condoms, discreet and over 99% effective, it may not be for everyone but i would suggest trying it out

I'm 21, have been on the implant for over a year now and personally, I think it's absolutely fantastic! Having it fitted only really hurts in the slight way that an injection does, and for me it's proved to have none of the side effects that I experienced during 5 or 6 years on the pill (mood swings reminiscent of my early teens, blemished skin and awful, AWFUL water retention!). Although it lacks the control over your periods that the pill gives, on Implanon mine have been fairly sporadic (perhaps every three months or so), generally very short, and nearly always so light that I don't have to wear any form of sanitary product or even abstain from sex!
Much more reliable than the pill and definately worth it if, like me, you're in a long term relationship and have better things to think about than 'oh crikey, did I take my pill yesterday?'. I think between us, my friends and I have tried just about every method of contraception there is, and the implant has turned out to be a firm favourite.
My only problem with it is that now I never have a valid excuse to eat my weight in chocolate once a month!

im one of the unlucky people who fell poregnant on the implant. when i had it removed i misscarried. i was so shocked i really didnt think this would happen they told me my body had rejected it. i was soo upset.

my friend wanted an implant in i told her to have it as everyones body is different but personally wish i never did and i would not ever ave it in again!

Hi Nick24,

Sorry if this is a bit late, but I've just seen your comment and was hoping I could help.
I'm a trainee medical lawyer, and in short, sadly, the answer is yes. The law states that in principle, contraceptive advice and treatment can be given to a girl under 16. It is essentially up to the clinical judgment of the treating doctor as to whether she is mature enough to be able to fully consider and understand the emotional and physical consequences of the decision she is making. (For more detailed information, type in 'Gillick competence' into Google.)
If the doctor feels this is the case then there is not only is there no requirement for parental consent, but it is not even necessary for the parents to be informed.
If the doctor feels this is not the case and she is not mature enough to understand, ultimately an appropriate person (usually the parents) must be told.

I hope this helps. Good luck

Hi, I'm 17 and have been using the implant since June last year. At the beginning my moods were only like those during a normal period, so nothing too drastic. So far i have had no problems with this contraception and I am so glad I chose to have it. Personally, I have had no weight gain due to it, and, most suprisingly, no spots - something which i was anticipating because I'm a teenager. It's just so much easier than remembering to take the Pill, as you can just forget about it. The only pain I had when putting the implant in is an injection which numbs your arm. My periods do vary from month to month, som its the normal length and sometimes its a lot lighter.

I did get asked if I was eleleptic when having a consultation, as some medications used for that causing the implant to be less effective. Hope this helps.

Im a sexually active 23 year old male who uses condoms when having sex, even if im told a woman is on the pill i never trust her to take it unless our relationship becomes seriouse.

I am very worried about being a father, it scares me more than anything and although i use condoms there is little choice for men regaurding contreception. So how can i tell if a woman has had the implant? I want to be without any condoms but still be responsible and not get a woman pregnant. I dont want to sound bad but when you have alot of good female friends who you sleep with on a friendship level for good fun and becouse were mutually attracted to each other, i need to make sure im safe.

Thanks all

I had the implant 6 months ago... Didn't hurt at all. Just like a normal jab, just make sure you look away :)
I was on the pill Cilest, it was fine, but i wanted something longer acting with no worries.
i had it put in and for 3 weeks nothing happened, then i got what seemed like a normal period... However, this normal period lasted for 3 weeks, varying from fairly light to pretty heavy. If it seemed to have disappeared... (AN OPPORTUNITY YIPEE), then sex brought it right back.
I had a holiday coming up, so i went to the doctor who prescribed me a 3-a-day (so quite high dose) of progesterone pills. These were to take over my holiday. Bleeding stopped. After my holiday i stopped taking them and had a withdrawal bleed, which is normal when you stop taking 3 pills a day.
3 days gap and the light bleeding returnred. It did not stop for a month and was worsened by sex. I piled on weight, a stone in 2 months, and my skin became spotty (small pimpley spots) and greasy.
I went to the family planning where i had it put in and begged them to take it out. The nurse told me it would be fine, sent me to the doctor. The doctor refused to take it out. She told me i hadn't givn it a fair chance. Hmph. I explained i'd had enough and wanted the bleeding to go away.
She put me on a combined pill called Marvelon. She said to take 2 packets (6 weeks' worth). During this time i continued to gain weight, and my skin is horrible, the Marvelon seems to have given me MASSIVE nasty spots all over my face all the time and the bleeding pattern of light bleeding/spotting all the time. UGH!
I plan to go back and insist on it's removal. I'll be happy to sett an alarm for a pill everyday, just get it out!
This doesn't happen to everyone, we're all different, but my friend had the same issue with her implant.
Don't mean to sound grim, but think very carefully about what might happen.

Hi. I got the implant in November 2008 after changing from the cerazette pill. Liked the idea of not having to worry about remembering the pill wherever i went and picking up prescriptions every month.
So i booked the appointment, was very easy. They gave me an injection which numbed my arm and then injected the hair grip sized implant and bandaged my arm up. There was no pain at all. At first i was worried about it falling out, even though i was assured it wouldn't, so i kept feeling for it and checking it was there.
Eventually i forgot about it.
After a month of having it in, i didn't have a period, and then i had one which lasted 3 weeks. I just assumed that it was because i had changed to the implant. So i didn't worry.
And i didn't have another period then until November, a year after the implant had been in. This lasted 5 weeks, so i just hoped that i would be a yearly thing. But then 2 weeks after that had finished, i had another period lasting 2 weeks, 2 week off and here i am again. I've been on this period for just over a week and have an appointment booked in at the weekend to see if it will stay like this, otherwise i'll have to change back to Cerazette pill again, where i didn't have periods at all.

I would recommend at least trying the implant, because it won't be like this for everybody, and it is very handy not having to worry about it for 3 years.

Hi, kd123 and beccae2k9,

I had the implant put in first of all when I was 18, I am now 21, I was also the worst at remebring to take my pill! I went to the doctor and because I get migrains this was the best option for me, you have it put in it does hurt im not going to lie, but not that much, it was as if I had sratched myself, once I was used to it, it didnt even feel like it was there. My periods did stop but that did not bother me, as I hate them too! lol.

After 2 years of having my implant put in, I felt for myslef that it was not working and then I had a new implant put in,(sep 09) and since I have had my new implant I have had periods every month, so I think that it depends on each and every person, but do not worrie about getting pregnant as this is one of the most affective contraceptive!

I hope that this has helped??
