Trichomoniasis

Causes of trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is caused by a tiny single-celled parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis.

The parasite is usually spread by having unprotected sex (without using a condom).

In rare cases, the infection can also be spread by sharing sex toys. However, if you make sure that you use a condom to cover your sex toy and wash the toy after every use, you will not spread the infection.

If you get trichomoniasis while you are pregnant, you may be at risk of passing the infection on to your baby.
