Pregnancy and baby

Pregnancy due date calculator

The calculator on this page can help you work out when you might expect your baby to arrive. This will give you a rough idea. As part of your antenatal care, your midwife will also offer you a dating scan that will give you a more accurate date for the birth of your baby.

Pregnancy normally lasts from 37 weeks to 42 weeks from the first day of your last period. To find your due date, use the drop down menus below to enter the date of the first day of your last period, and click 'calculate date' - the calculator will do the rest.

Some women's cycles are not exactly 28 days. If your cycle is shorter or longer than 28 days, please adjust the number below.

If you would like to save your due date, you will need to log in or create an NHS Choices account - you can do this in the box below.

Creating an NHS Choices account will also allow you to write and save your birth plan online.

I wanted to share my experience. After me and my husband got married we decided to try for baby number three. So my first day of my last period was 5th June I started ovulating around 15th we were intimate a lot in that time the day I was due my period came and went tested a day late negative result tested every day for two weeks still negative went to doctors negative. Got bloods done by this time I was three weeks late my hcg come back less than one. I got told there is no way I can be pregnant. Do when I was due second period a week later I tested again and got a faint positive I got bloods done and within a week my hcg went from less than one to 133 and confirmed I am pregnant. Now I am 8 weeks and over the moon. This never happened in my other two pregnancies but happened this time. My words of wisdom. Trust your own body

Can someone please give me their opinion?
My last period was on the 18th of May, I'm now around 16 days late. I've used two at-home pregnancy tests, both of which were negative.
I've been experiencing some nausea and dizziness, but I think that it's the effect of a recent change in my dose of medication.
What should I do?

Skylina, they are not fobbing you off try not to worry. There is plenty of information on here to tell you the things you should and should not be doing. The midwife will be in touch.
You will have had your first booking appointment long before your 12 week dating scan so nothing to worry about.
Doctors only get involved when something is wrong so it's not that they are not interested it's just that the midwives are the experts.
Just make sure your taking Folic acid as it's the first 12 weeks where the neural tube developers that this is most important. Avoid soft cheeses, raw meat, soft boiled eggs and liver and your fine.
Good luck and enjoy being pregnant!
I've got 24hr a day morning sickness so am not having too much fun at the moment, was the same with my first but I still came back for baby no2 xxxx

I've tested positive on 3 pregnancy tests, one very faint on the clear blue, and now 2 on the digital. First digital one said 1-2 weeks (doctor would date 3-4) and the second digital 2-3 weeks (doctor would date 4-5).
I've called my doctor, who tells me I'm pregnant, those tests wont get any more accurate then they are now, and wait for the midwife to call. Doctor wouldn't book me in for any appointment, they don't do further tests apparently. She said look online for what I should/shouldn't do, should/shouldn't eat.
Everything I look at online says call the doc, the doc says wait for the midwife. I look on the NHS site for the nearest maternity team, their phone number takes me to an answering machine that directs me to go to the GP if 16+ and urgent, call someone else if 16+ and not urgent, call someone again if you've already had the baby.

What on earth do I do? Am I overworrying because I haven't done this before? Or is this fobbing off normal?

I posted on here back on the 22/04, my last period was the 07/03, I have now missed 2 periods 31/03 and 24/04 (24 days cycle) All home pregnancy tests are negative, my breasts are so sore and the nipple area has changed shape. Doctors took blood last week and when I asked what they were testing for she simply responded "hormone levels" I did ask if they would be testing for pregnancy and the doctor responded that they don't do that anymore as it is too expensive, seemed a very odd response to me!? anyway results back and hormone levels are as they should be. Whilst this is great it still does not explain the missed periods (2 of) and the sore breasts, my other half is positive I am pregnant but I just can't see how all of these tests can be wrong, any advice is welcome. Thanks all. Lilly.

Hey beeps1 i to went down the same path as you at home the test said "pregnant" when i we to the doctors it said "not pregnant" so my doctor advised me to go to the early pregnancy unit at my nearest hospital i had a scan done to my surprise there was nothing there so i would advise you to go there and plus our bodies the hormones can play tricks on us (trust me i know) the doctor who examined me said next time you miss a period and its been 10 days still you see nothing dont go your gp or spend money on tests come to us and we will do your test and plus put you on the scan

All this just recently happened my due date is today i did 2test saying "pregnant" but im going to wait until next week then im going to go to early pregnancy unit ward

Feel like I am going mad. Had a positive home test done with clear blue digital. Then doctors one apparently too faint and took to long to be regarded as positive. Does that mean I am or I am not. Is a home test more accurate than a doctor's one?

To bella1980 sperm can live inside you for upto 7days and you can caught anytime in that time. It is also possible for you to release an egg early so this could explain the due date. I hope this helps take care. X

I know you all probably get asked this question a lot but I am 38 years old, 39 in May, my last period was 07/03/14, I have had 4 negative tests, my next period is due this week around the 24/04 as I have a short cycle of 24 days, can anyone tell me what is going on here as I can't believe that 4 tests can be wrong? I have never missed a period before so slightly concerned, I do worry that as I am nearly 39 my body is starting to change and that this missed period has nothing to do with pregnancy. Any advice welcome.

I was wondering if anyone can help me.

I am 26+5 days pregnant and my due date is on the 10th July 2014.

I split up with my boyfriend just a few days before and had sex on the 7th November with somebody else but just once. The last time I remember being on my period is August and I think in September but they have always been sketchy.

I had my scan late on but both of them were July 10th. I have worked out that my estimated conception was the beginning of October but I don't know how wrong they could of got it? Surely not 5 weeks ahead of what I actually am?

My period was 21st oct which would mean I conceived around 5th nov but my dating scan said I was 1 week ahead meaning I conceived 29th oct. I am so confused.

Hi, I'm just wondering how you're getting on? I was in the same position - period was nearly 2 weeks late and I had 2 negative home pregnancy tests. I went tp my GP this week and tested a faint positive, and today, results showed that I'm pregnant. Don't always trust home kits as studies show they're not as sensitive as they claim...or, you could have ovulated late and therefore not as far along as you think. I'd make an appointment with your doctor :) Good luck x

No, whoever you had intercourse with after you period (21st Aug) that person is the father. Not your ex.

Evs95...in early pregnancy the test result is more accurate if you test first thing in the morning, that's when your pee is at it's strongest, because fluid dilutes it! Try waiting a few more days and then if symptoms carry on then test again.

My last period was 19/07/13. I did a test on 15th of august that was negative. I then got tender breasts and did another yesterday. The 24th august which was positive. I think conception may have been the 13th though we did have sex up to and during my last period and after ie immediately for a week after an during then a little break then again from 30th for a few days. The calculator here says I could e 5 weeks but he test was negative on the 15th could this just be because it was ok early to detect? I'm trying and asking basically how far along could I be?

Hi, would really like some opinions please.

My last period was 03/06 and today 10/07 (37th day of cycle) I have had some light red/pink blood. I wouldn't usually be worried but I know that exactly 14 days ago (26/06) I had unprotected sex. Would this be on my ovulation date? I have no idea why my 'period', if it is a period, was so late. Usually I have a 32 day cycle, it's never ever been this late before. Do you think I could be pregnant even though I'm bleeding a little? I've felt hungrier, had cramps last week when I expected my period and have been feeling a little more tired than usual. Any help or advice would be really appreciated. Thanks

Hi Velvetee,
As far as I know the weeks and due date estimated in the early scan are the most precise ones. I had a couple of day's difference between last menstrual period and early scan estimates, and all professionals who've seen me after the scan took that date as the most certain reference. So I'd stick to the scan one.
I think this is because a) menstrual cycles and conception dates can be more irregular than we think and b) the week count and due date estimate from the scan are based on some kind of foetal measurement which is very accurate. Congrats on your pregnancy and good luck!

Confused about due date and how many weeks I am.

I used the Due date calculator on this site and several other sites and my due date came up as 8 weeks. However when I went for an early scan they dated me as being 6 weeks 5 days, that was on Friday so I would be 7 weeks + 2 today according to the scan. My last period was 12 April and I believe I conceived around 26/27 April.

Can anyone explain this please. How many weeks am I and when will the baby be due. The Hospital said 27/01/2014

@tonicambell, from my quick calculations if the ultrasound says your babys is 32 weeks then u got pregnant sometime at the end of september, if u don't remember when ur period was then just count back from today 32 weeks, I got end of september so more than likely the baby is ur boyfriends. If u do know when the first day of last period was then the baby was conceived about 3 weeks after that. When doctor date ur pregnancy without an ultrasound they include ur weeks period and the 2 weeks befor you ovilated. Hope this helps

Ok, I have a question if anyone can help. I had my last period on the 23/2. I have the copper coil fitted and have had that over a year now. My period cycle is short, every 3 wkend & 2 days making a 23 day cycle, meaning my period was due on the 18th March. So far it has not arrived, now 6 days late, but saying that as of Friday just gone have been having brown spotting but nothing else. I never have late periods, if anything they will be early but can't remember a time when I have ever been late? I have done a preg test (Wed) negative. Now due to my cycle would it be too early to test anyway? Thanks for any response.

Hi,
My last period was on the 18th of february and I haven't been on since then. I am urinateing more frequently than I used to, I have been getting back pains, my breasts are sore, i have been eating a lot more and I have been feeling sick all the time. Every time I have had sex in the past two months I haven't used any sort of protection at all and every time he has ejaculated inside me.
Would someone please be able to help me out? Thank you

Hi, Can you please give me some advice. My period is currently 6 days late so I have taken a pregnancy today and it appears I am pregnant although the line indicating so was faint and not solid, i'm wondering if this could be due to early days?? My biggest dilemna is figuring out who the father is. So I started my period on the 17/01-22/01, I had unprotected sex with the first guy on 23/01 although he pulled out before ejaculating inside me. I then had sex with the second guy on 06/02 who ejaculated in me quite alot. I'm hoping its for the second guy as we are more stable, however I need to know for sure so I can make a decision whether to continue with the pregnancy. Can I find out at this stage how many weeks I am?? I'm guessing 2 or 4 weeks. I just really need to figure out who i'm pregnant for?

Im so confused I hope someone can help

I had 2 scans yesterday an internal ultra sound, and external ultrasound
It was done by BPAS ( abortion clinic )

They dated me at 7 weeks 6 days
The external scan showed me as 6 weeks 4 days

Does this mean my likely conception date was around 5 weeks 6 days ago?

Reason I ask is because I had intercourse with someone on 9th December ( he didn't ejaculate, I know this doesn't matter)
Then I had intercourse with a new partner on 19th and 26th December ( he did ejaculate inside )

im almost certain it must be my second partner who has got me pregnant.

I understand the only way is a DNA so please don't suggest that im just after friendly advise

Thankyou for the advise! Im 7 weeks and 5 days now and still no sickness! My gran said it will prob be a boy as well!
Im not fussed what i have as long as its healthy!

Anyway i went to my gp on thursday morning and she was most ungelpful and very quick, she was a lot younger than me so weathter that had anything to do with the way she treated me!
All she did was ask me when my last period was and check my blood pressure and said she would refer me to a midwife.
She didntgive me any advise ask how i was or even do a pregnancy test to confirm it! I could be lying for all she knows!
Also she gave me no indication of when the midwife was likely to contact me. so all in all i left feeling very upset!!
thank you again for all your advise, good luck with your pregnancy!

This is my fourth pregnancy as I have lost two. I have suffered alot of cramps with my son and was never sick once. They say that women are less likely to be sick if you're having a boy......but of course it's not always the case. With this pregnancy I have felt sick but still never been sick. Hope all goes well at the docs, you have probably been by now anyway.

I think it's the 2nd guy but clearly that is just my opinion. If the first day of your last period was on 23rd November and you ovulated in the middle of your cycle it will be him. Not everyone does ovulate in the middle of the cycle but it's most common. Going from your dates 8th Dec would be one of your most fertile days in the month. I know you said you had a light bleed but I'm 12 weeks pregnant and I had a light period but got pregnant the month after too, also I was on the pill. It was just one of them things. Hope this helps ;-)

Then i had sex again with someon on the 8th Dec and quite a few times in the weeks after that.
I stopped taking my pill for the usual one week break on the 23rd Dec and still no period. I was due to take it again on the 31st but have been hesitant so far so I took a first response test last night and i was pregnant.
Please could someone help me as i am unsure who the father will be?? Would it be the 1st or 2nd person i slept with.

misstrl - If you have missed two periods and have negative tests it will have nothing to do with pregnancy. I've heard the test failing at perhaps 5-6 weeks due to low hcg levels but nothing more. I can't give you my opinion on why you're not having periods because I'm no doctor. Have you had a smear test?

dancinginthestars said on 02 January 2013

i86 you may have ovulated really early (like the day after your period) which could make you pregnant to the first guy. Although saying that the after pill does not always work.

Can you remember if you had a period after to you slept with the first guy?

If you want me to take a guess from your dates given I would say it was the 2nd guy.

Hi, I wonder if you could help me. I found out 2 days ago that I am pregnant, I spoke to mt GP and he said that if the 1st day of my last period was the 21st of Nov it means that I am 5-6 weeks pregnant. What is driving me insane is that I had sex with someone about 6 weeks ago, he didn't ejaculate inside. 2 weeks ago I had unprodected sex and he did ejaculate inside however I took the morning after pill straight away. Therefore I am pretty sure that the child would be of the 1st sexual partner I had 6 weeks ago, right?? Or could it be the second one? When I went for the morning after pill 2 weeks ago they did a pregnancy test and it came out negative so I am confused as I reckon that I would have already been about 3 weeks pregnant, is it normal that it would show as it may have been too early?

Some help would be great please!! Thank you!

Hello, just a quick question. My last period started on 11.09.12 and ended on 15.09.12. Me and my partner have had unprotected sex 3 times since my last period and I have not come on yet. I have been regular since the birth of my son 14 months ago (well after things settled down). From what I can work out I am over a week late and it's driving me nuts not knowing. My partner said its to early to do a test and it will be a waste of money this early and he thinks we should wait another 2 weeks before discussing doing a test. If I was pregnant will a test tell me at this stage or should I wait another two weeks to see if I come on? The other problem I have is that when I was pregnant with my son I did 9 home pregnancy tests over 5 weeks (a bit much I know lol) and they was all neg. I ended up going to the drs to get a blood test done and they confirmed I was pregnant and sent me for a scan as my levels were so high they believed I was quite far gone (I was 9w 5d). I'm worried this may happen again which is why I don't know when to test / how long to wait. Any advise please. Thank you :-)

Hi,
I currently expeienced some very light pinkish spotting on monday which is about 6 days before I am due to come onto my period which will be around the 19/10/12 maybe a few days later and I am always 28 days and sometimes a couple of days late never early.
With this I am also feeling sick and dizzy with very frequent head aches which are unlike me and mega sore breasts which feel very hot and heavy plus extremely tender.
Plus I am going to the toilet more frequent and feeling more tired than usual... I am feeling like I have lost my apetite and that i have a bitter metallic taste in my mouth after eating or drinking....
Could I be pregnant as we have been trying for nearly 3 years....... anyone any ideas...????

Jess265 - it's unlikely you're pregnant if you haven't had sex since your last period.

However, some women who are pregnant do have a light bleed, so there is a chance that this could be the case. If you're still worried, the only way to know for certain is to do a pregnancy test. Hope this helps.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could help me? This may be a stupid query but I am a bit worried so I just wanted to ask for some advice.
My last period started on 28/08/12 and lasted until 1/9/12. I haven't had sex since then (I had sex about one week before, using a condom) but now I am still waiting for my period and it is ten days since it should have started. I know that really I shouldn't be pregnant as I havent had sex since then, but on a general basis I am quite regular and this month has not been particularly stressful and I am not ill.
I know that I should take a test but I don't have much money and it is not easy for me to get one at the moment anyway.
If anyone can shed any light on my situation I would be very greatful :)

Hi nat12 - if you've had unprotected sex since your last period, there is a chance you could be pregnant. The only way to find out for sure is to do a pregnancy test. The earliest you can take a pregnancy test is the day your period is due, or if you don't know when it's due, you can take a test 21 days after you had unprotected sex. If your period is already late, you can take a pregnancy test at any time.

Hi Ostillie, I'm sorry to hear about the difficult time you've had this year.

As you aren't sure when your period is due, you can take a pregnancy test 21 days after you had the unprotected sex.

If you've had a negative pregnancy test and still think that you might be pregnant, wait a week and try again, or see a GP. You can find out more about when you can take a pregnancy test via this link:

I hope this helps.

Hello. I have a question.

I normally have regular periods but on the 24 of May 2012 I had to have an abortion (a very difficult decision to take but i though it was better than having to raise a kid who would suffer all his life due to spina bifida).
Since then my periods have been a bit irregular.

Last month, on the date of 23 August I had my period.
What i'm "worried" now is that i might be pregnant.

Like i said, my periods have not been regular lately and even though we used condoms, one managed to slip off.

Basically, I took a pregnancy test today and it came out negative but still no period.

Do you think it might be too early for a home pregnancy to detect it? calculating around 2 weeks after intercourse? Should i wait another week or so and do another pregnancy test or...?

thank you! :)

LunaD,

A woman's pregnancy is dated from the first day of her last period, not from the day of conception. You had a period starting on 19 July, so if you got pregnant after this date your pregnancy weeks will be counted from 19 July. The surest way to find out how many weeks pregnant you are is via an ultrasound scan.

After ovulation, the egg lives for 12-24 hours. You can find out more about when pregnancy can happen via this link:
http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/getting-pregnant.aspx

If you're worried, you can always talk to your midwife who can discuss your dates with you. You can also contact the FPA helpline on 0845 122 8690, or their email enquiry service:
http://www.fpa.org.uk/helpandadvice/askwes

I hope this helps.

Please help if you can, this is driving me loopy!

I found out I was pregnant two days ago on the 16th of August. I was really pleased, but surprised as we only got married on the 26th of July. My cycle is usually 24 days, but changes sometimes. The first day of my last period was 19th of July, meaning I would have ovulated on the 29th July. I had sex with my husband on our honeymoon on this date and the day before. So I was thinking that this is when I conceived, making me 3 weeks pregnant. I did a Clearblue conception test to make sure and it said I was 2-3 weeks pregnant. These tests are 92% accurate for the conception dates.
However, as my husband is aware that I made a stupid mistake and had sex on the 8th of July with another man. It was a drunken, stupid thing to do which I regret very much. We didn't use a condom but he didn't ejaculate inside me. However I am aware that there is still a chance I could get pregnant this way. According to my phone app I would have ovulated on the 5th of July. I didn't have sex for about 2 weeks before the 8th July. Would the egg have survived long enough (from 5th July) to be fertilised by sperm on the 8th, making me 6 weeks pregnant rather that 3? And if so, how can I find out for sure? I need to be sure the baby is my husband's and not this other man's. I feel so stupid for making such an awful mistake, I just want to die at this moment to be completely honest.

Really I need to know if I am 3 or 6 weeks pregnant.

I had a miscarriage at 8 weeks in April and waited 5 weeks for my period after. Since then I had to wait 40 days for my next 2 periods, however 10 days after my last period finished I felt off food and felt twinges in my stomach and thought I would take a test. Turns out I'm 1-2 weeks from conception date. How do I work out how far along I am? Technically I shouldn't be able to get a positive test without my next missed period, and my conception date and first day of last period are so close together? Confused!

In fact google 10 week fetus, then 14 week fetus and even you will see a massive difference, trust your ultrasound, mine said baby was 3 days younger than my lmp dates, so if they can tell the difference in 3 days, i really dont think you have anything to worry about

littledollydaydream said on 22 May 2012

Hi, It must be hard to have that bit of doubt, but you are most likely to be the father, ovulation takes place around 2 weeks after lmp and the egg only survives for a day, sperm however can live for upto 7 days so the other fellas sperm would have had to survive 4 weeks for him to be the father. However there is a small chance that the last guy got there on the last ovulation and your girlfriend had a period following this, but if it was a real period the womb lining would have been shredded and the baby aborted, there are always rare cases though and if your girlfriends period was not a period but an early pregnancy bleed, then there is a chance that itsh is. But judging by the dates from the scan, I would say congratulations Daddy, as the sonergrapher can tell the difference in a few days development never mind 4 weeks

She had an ultrasound on 3rd jan 2012 saying she was exactly 10 weeks pregnant and was given a due date of 31st july 2012. Is it possible that the other guy could be the father (I realy hope not!)

Hi Lolaknows,
Congratulations on your pregnancy.
A woman's pregnancy is dated from the first day of her last period. In women with a regular menstrual cycle, the last period usually happens around two weeks before she actually gets pregnant (at the time of ovulation). So when we talk about a woman being eight weeks pregnant, she actually conceived six weeks ago. I hope this helps. If you are still confused, do talk to your midwife, who will be able to go through the dates with you.

Hi,

I am a currently pregnant, first time mom!.. and i have a few queries which have been stressing me out really bad.

First of all i do not know my LMP as i am so irregular and can go months without a period. I had my first ultrasound scan on February 9th which stated i was 11w4days. So when worked out would have taken me back to November 19th/20th 2011. Would this be my LMP? Does the ultrasound just assume this?. The only problem being the only time i had unprotected sex was around December 3rd-4th 2011? i was just curious as to why the ultrasound had dated me 2 weeks prior to be having sex and me not knowing my LMP.

First ultrasound - 9th Feb 2012 = 11w4d
Second Ultrasound - 12th April 2012 = 20w4d
Due Date - 26th August 2012

Could someone please help me as to how this is all calculated as i am desperate and stressed to know

Today on 1st May 2012 = 23w2Days

I had a miscarriage before having my first baby. I remember that my cycle was absolutely screwed up afterwards with cycles from 14 days to 40 days! But that doesn't mean that you aren't still fertile. My sister-in-law conceived quickly after a miscarriage so that, like you, she was left confused and unsure as what was happening. She is now well into her 2nd trimester.

As Anadd said in the post previous to yours, this dating based on your last period is only an estimate. Once you have your dating scan, that due date is revised.

Since what is considered full term varies from 38 to 42 weeks, I wouldn't worry about what exactly your due date is as baby comes when baby is ready anyway!

Congratulations and get yourself booked in with your midwife!

Hi, just wondered if any one could give me advise.
I had a miscarriage back in Feb, and had a period in March which was longer and heavier than my normal period but I was told this was expected for the first period after a miscarriage so I thought my periods were back on track.
I was due on a few days ago, we did a test today and it says I am 2-3 weeks pregnant so in fact im 4-5 weeks and the baby is due in December. Is this correct? Surely my cycle would have changed due to my miscarriage and longer period.
I am slightly confused. Does any one know?

thanks!

Expecting87 all i know is count from the first day of your last period but you are actually conceived after your period when it was due ovulation. so it should minus 2 weeks. does it make sense?

because it dose not mean you conceived on the first day or your period, it just start counting from it but when you conceived, it should be in later day after you finish your period and near ovulation where the eggs release.

hope it helps

Hi
I had my first scan this week at which I was told my due date is 17th September and I'm over 13 weeks gone!
How is this calculated I have read lots of eyesores saying its taken from first day of last period which would make my last period 12th December which seems about right to me but have never been regular so can't remember exactly.
My issue is that the first time I slept with my partner was 11 weeks ago Monday 26th December which is 14days after the day yey are dating my pregnancy from
Is this right? Just need some reassurance because obviously my partner is thinking hang on that's before we did anything!?

I am 40 and have been told that it will be difficult to get pregnant. Last month I went to the A&E as I found my belly in pain, I felt so tired and especially my breasts, it was so sore, so big and heavy. The doctor did the urine test and said I was not pregnant and in fact I've got some infection and gave me some antibiotic. So, I thought everything fine after the medication but my breasts are still like a melon and so sore, I was panicking that I have breast cancer. Today, I went to the near walk in centre to see the nurse, she did a urine test for me, I thought , it probably will be an other infection or something, but she told me the test result was positive. I was, What? What is positive mean?( I was so shocked! ) she said, you are pregnant. look there are 2 lines!

I use the due date calculator, it said I am 4 weeks pregnant, but I went to the A&E last month after my period and took antibiotic, will it harm my baby? or maybe I should do more test to make sure I am really pregnant?

by the way, the due date calculator told me my due date and that is my birthday !!! hahaha

worriedgirl!

Stop worrying, I'm in the same boat but two weeks behind. My GP was very understanding and initially only asked me to start taking folic acid, and we discussed reducing my meds. It was pretty much the same with the midwife, who gave me a load of leaflets and info - tho a lot of it will be what you've read on here already!

My only advice is to have someone to talk to that you trust, and if there isn't anyone make sure you get to the midwife and talk to her, because you'll need someone to offload to!

Hello everyone, I wondered if anyone would be able to give me any advice.

I have just found out I am pregnant for the first time, and It works out that I am 9 weeks pregnant. I am pretty worried as I am also suffering with depression, so haven't really been looking after myself as well as I should, so am worried this might have had a knock on effect. Could someone tell me what happens when you go to the doctors for the first time, what happens next kind of thing?. Also do you get given some sort of pregnancy book or is this down to me to get?.

This would be great news at any other time but I am so worried my baby won't be healthy and I know its not the kind of thing I could find out, so I am worried my hand might be forced into doing something I don't really want to do, but I wouldn't want to have the baby then forever hate myself if there is something wrong.

Sorry to ramble on, please don't judge me I am sure someone out there can understand my worry?. Thank you so much for reading and responding if you do.

Hi everyone. I did a pregnancy test on Valentines Day which showed positive after having missed my period and had sore breasts. Since then I've done another 4 tests, all showed positive as I do not believe I am pregnant. My other 2 pregnancies over 12 years ago, I got morning sickness but apart from swollen breasts and slight nausea, I do not feel pregnant. Using the NHS direct due date calculator I am 8 weeks pregnant. Also I am having trouble getting a date for my 12 week scan which would prove or disprove whether I am pregnant or not. I also have had lower back pain for months which is continuing on and off now, so I am worried maybe I am not pregnant but it's something else like Cancer. What do you guys think?

Dear BUNINTHEOVEN,
I think that you have decided not to lean under the pressure of your partner is very admirable. You are entitled to make this decision for your own benefit and that of your child.
Although you may find your situation uneasy and beyond what you expacted I think you have had a lucky escape. People show their true colours when their idea of normal is challenged and if this is how he will react when thngs happen out of the blue you've had a lucky escape.

It is possible that he has gone into blind panic and feels so out of control he feels trapped. I think if you have a good support network from your family and friends everything will be fine. Let him simmer down and realise that this isn't going away and is actually a special gift. If he chooses to move on then you know you he wasn't worth having in the beginning. Enjoy your pregnancy and the baby to come. It will be the best gift you ever received and you will live knowing you did what was right for you.

Well done you and very good luck!

The babys father did not want another at the time even though he already had 2 girls asked me to have an abortion or threatened to leave me. As much as I love him there was no real choice there and I just accepted that I would be a single mam but no matter what wouldnt be doing it on my own I have a lot of friends and family around me to help. He has since changed his mind and wants to be involved with the baby just a shame he didnt put through what he did or we might have still been together, however im not stopping him being there and I hope he sticks to his word.

however i cannot understand where all his behaviour has come from he is not usually like this
so really i am just looking for some words of wisdom to help with my conflicting emotions as i am ecstatic about my little peanut but am devestated that my love hass abandoned me :(

Marey an internet questionnaire cannot determine whether you are pregnant or not, it can only recognize symptoms, and every woman could have different symptoms at different times, the only way to be 100% sure is by taking a pregnancy test, however sometimes a negative result can be wrong whereas a posotive one is almost always reliable. Try taking another test - I imagine you have by now as your post was a couple of weeks ago - but to the rest of you out there if your tests are negative and you still think you might be pregnant, then visit your GP and tell them your situation and he or she will most likely give you a blood test as this is more sensetive to the hormones released when pregnant and will for sure give you a definite answer. God bless you all :)

To Marie23

I had a miscarriage in May and was told that my cycle should arrive at about 6 weeks after the miscarriage although mine was actually a bit later than that. Your HCG levels should come back down to normal after 3 weeks so if your cycle has not arrived and it's been over 3 weeks a test should be accurate. The best advice i would give is if its been longer than 3 weeks since the miscarriage take a test and it should hopefully show up correctly but if you are still not sure contact your doctors x good luck

Hi ladies, I am not one of you, I am an expectant dad, my wife of almost 24 years is approx 12 weeks pregnant with our eight child, (and yes I do work and support all my children without state aid before someone suggest I get a tv)my wife won't go to the docs /midwife to register as our beautiful son, who was our sixth very sadly died the week he was due to be born, this effected us both tremendously which I am sure you guys can understand . Our seventh child was subsequently a nerve wrecking episode, but thankfully was fine, my wife wanted one more as there was a seven year age gab between the youngest , now almost three and the next child.I love kids and my wife is a great mum, so we started trying, had a miscarriage in January of this year and fell again in June.
Where I need some advice is this, my wife has sworn me to secrecy, she is 46 and in great shape, but at an age where she should need closer supervision, she won't have any medical intervention.
Any more mature mums out there who can advise me, at this rate I think I will need to get up to speed on delivery proceedres!!!!
Sorry for winging, but hey, I am a bloke

Congratulations to User588628...I too am 39. Have just found out I'm four weeks pregnant (based on first day of last period) with my first . I'm in bed, trying to think of ways to reduce my stress levels. I had a myomectomy last year to remove fibroids but in January this year found out I have a couple of small ones on my left so off to the docs tomorrow to just talk through how we manage things. I know they may say see how the next few weeks go but I just want to make sure I get into the 'system so they can keep a close eye on things. I'm trying to think that whatever will be will be but my age, the fibroids and I'm overweight are all things that are causing me a little worry. Nice to be able to get this off my chest here as although husband very supportive, he doesn't fully understand how overwhelming it can be to in this situation and I don't want to tell friends of family yet. To all the newly pregnant ladies, I wish you the best and I pray that things go well for me and my little one too of course!

I'm lying here in bed in shock! Partner away - been feeling unwell for a few weeks, headaches, tired and short of breath. Didn't even occur to me that I might be pregnant until I thought (in the middle of another sleepless night) I better rule it out before I go to the doctors.... Did test, am 3 weeks pregnant. I am 39 and have 2 children age 13 and 9 by a previous relationship- we had given up really, not used contraception for 3 years, had an early miscarriage last summer and since then not been living well really, drinking too much etc - god, can't believe it. Not holding out too much hope for full term but at least I've caught it early, shall be healthy from now on!! I can't believe I thought my symptoms were stress or illness - I've been having such a hard time recently, money problems, work stress, arguing like cat and dog! This is really a bolt from the blue, I didn't consider it....just had to share! X

Wow – a lot of unanswered questions on here, I hope if people don’t get answers they go elsewhere. Rather than worrying whether you are or aren’t pregnant just do a test – no one on here can say yes or no. I used a super cheap supermarket one. If you’re getting negative tests then maybe it’s too early to be testing or you’ve drunk too much liquid or you’ve not used the first wee of the day. Doctors don’t usually test you when you have your first appointment to say you’re pregnant as the tests they use are as effective as the over the counter ones these days, with my first child the doctor simply made sure I was transferred to midwife care, spoke to me about healthy eating, exercise, folic acid, smoking and alcohol and saw me off on my merry way. As a low risk pregnancy I didn’t see my midwife much but if there are no problems that’s fine – let your body do the work. Goodness knows why the clearblue test is different to the standard week measurement (as starting from the day of conception gives you a standard 40 week human gestation), it’s clearly confused a lot of you.

I was worried by the post about a boyfriend who’d rather a new car than a baby – will this be his attitude when his child is born? It sounds like he is too immature and selfish to be ready for fatherhood.

Of course you can have sex while pregnant (unless advised otherwise by midwife or doctor if you have a conditional like placenta previa or an incompetent cervix) – it’s the ideal time to celebrate your changing body, to be close to your partner and to stay normal!!! (It can be better too due to an increase in the amount of blood in that area!) And I’m making the most of it now as sex was out of the question for a fair old while after my first child – do it while you’re pregnant as afterwards you’re likely to be incredibly sore!

Hi Tillym,

Your due date is worked out from the first date of of womans last period (not the date conception took place)so that is where the 25th June would of come from. Your daughter arriving on the 5th of June might just mean she wanted to come and meet you early, which im sure you know sometimes happens. You can never actually pin down the date of a babys arrival only they make that decision. I think you should enjoy your new little on and stop worrying 20 days early is very common. Congrats by the way

Hi,

I have just found out on Sat that I am pregnant. I am 29 and at 18 I was told that I would never be able to have children with out medical help so complete shock for me! I have done a clear blue test and it makes me 1-2 weeks, I have been getting loads of symptons, all the norm that you hear about like sore boobs, nausea and tiredness but I have also been getting feelings as though I am about to come on my period. Is this normal? This isn't a symptom I have heard of before. Obviously hearing that I am pregnant when I thought it was something that would never happen is one of the best things to happen to me and now I am worried I am going to lose this before it has actually began. Please can someone tell me if they had those feelings too and carried on to have a normal and healthy pregnancy.

Hi All,
Having missed my period a few weeks ago I did my 4th test this morning and finally got a pregnancy confirmation! i just thought i woudl share that as a lot of you on here are also getting negative results even though you feel you are pregnant. It is very possible to get a false negative!!! I have used various tests (this is my third pregnancy) and have got false negative with lots of brands even when they are supposedly accurate from the date of your period. In fact I actually got a negative result from the doctor and then he called back a few days later and said the lab report showed i was pregnant. I did a Clearblue test last week and it was negative and this morning it is saying 2-3 weeks!

Also in answer to tiny83 - sore breasts and tiredness are absolutely symptoms that I notice when pregnant. Even in the first few weeks. For me the tiredness lasts 8-12 weeks but the soreness does fade quickly.

Anyway good luck to everyone who is trying and for those of you already pregnant i hope you have an easy 9 months and a beautiful healthy baby at the end of it! Now i'm off to give my husband a bit of a shock....

@ edolly, it's lovely you can give hope to other people who are disappointed with trying and trying and almost feel like giving up. I always thought becoming pregnant was supposed to be the easy bit. Me and my husband have a son (coming up to 6 yrs old) and got pregnant by accident with him when i was 17. A year and a half ago we started trying for a second baby and only just now have i managed to get pregnant!! i tried not to think about it too much because i know stressing out and getting frustrated is bad but its so hard not too when you have been trying so long and when 1st time round we didnt have to try at all! good luck with your pregnancy, when r u due, mine is roughly 11th jan.

I am new to this site and any other pregnancy site as I have just found out I am pregnant... I wanted to give some inspiring words to any women/ couples who are trying for a baby and not having much success. My partner and I had been trying for a year and half and had recently gone down the IVF route. We had just been told that I had v low AMH levels and probably couldnt concieve on r own. We were waiting for the appointment to start treatment in July! I was 3 days late and did a cheap pregnancy test that I had form months ago when I stil thought it would happen! It was positive... Tried again with a clear blue.... positive! only 4/5 weeks but am praying to God that he keeps this amazing gift safe and healthy.. never give up hope and good luck everyone.... x

Fao excited m2b

The 2-3 on the test is the number of weeks since conception. 5 weeks is the number of weeks pregnant u are. They always date from the first day of ur last period although u don't convince to around two weeks later. Hope that makes sence and congratulations on ur pregnancy :)

This is my first comment and although I am apprehensive to tell the world I am delighted to say I have just found out that I am pregnant!! However, the clear blue test said I am 2-3 but when I checked my due date on here and with the doctors they said 5 weeks what is all that about I am confused! Any clues ladies?

Thanks

ive just found out im pregnant the only reason i did the tests was because i suffered heart burn for 1whole day and my breasts have been tender mind you we have been tryin for near enough a year after coming off my pill which i was on for 7years. i did a cheap test then sent my partner to the shop for a clearblue test which came up 3+weeks which actually means 5+weeks I must say i didnt understand why we have to work it out from our 1st day of our last period as wouldnt that have been us releasing unfertalized eggs in our last period so that also means we wouldnt have conceived at this date ?? confused but yes i also went on what i was told to do

@Autumn Treasure

I'm so sorry to hear about your boyfriend's change of heart. Emotions cannot just be turned on and off.

With regards to your situation and whether you could be pregnant. I have been trying to get pregnant since May last year (I'm currently 7 weeks now after two previous miscarriages). I have been using the Clearblue Ovulation Test machine which is great and it has allowed me to chart my most fertile days.

I'm averaging a 32 to 33 day cycle most months and my fertile days vary from day 12* to day 20 but seem strongest between day 16 to day 19. My day 12* high result was on a 23 day cycle, very soon after coming off the pill so it could be a bit of a red herring.

I understand the average ovulation is around 2 weeks after the first day of your period i.e. day 14. On a slightly longer cycle I'm coming out at day 16 onwards.

If you are only at day 14 now then chances are you'll be ok. The main risk would be if you had sex in the last day or so and you ovulate at around two weeks.

The Clear Blue pregnancy test is very accurate from before you're due, but I would recommend you test on the day your period is due just for that peace of mind.

Good luck.

, putting a car before your family and it's s bit late to say that now) I usually have a 35 day cycle and I'm just a little worried as I had Intercourse without protection for around 10 days i would really appreciate it if someone could help me I can I b pregnant already, and if so r there any signs I could spot this early on as I'm completely confused

Just really want to no what I
Can do my period is due in just under 3 weeks

Please help
Congratulations to everyone making a baby or had one xx

Hi, I turned 46 in January and after 2 (unsuccessful) rounds of IVF last year (June and November), I have found out I am pregnant (6 weeks). Absolutely estatic but have concerns, as I have a history of fibroids (I had abdominal myomectomies in 2007 and 2010). As I am still quite early, I keep on being advised not to say anything until 12 weeks but how difficult is that? I work in law and often lift heavy files and boxes. I can understand obviously because of the risks associated with pregnancy at my age but, so far, so good - my HCG reading was 7000 and I'm about to have another blood test tonight, with my first scan next week. Problem is, I am now worried about miscarriage, etc etc. Any advice?

I am looking for some advice, my girlfriend of 4 months told me she was pregnant at the beginning of feb. We had agreed on a termination and the consultation was yesterday. At the consultation my girlfriend was told that she was actually 22 weeks along and too far along for the termination. She is confused as this puts the date of conception in mid October and she has had periods since that time. She stopped seeing her previous boyfriend late September and we didn't start seeing each other until mid November and there was no sexual activity until late November early December and no intercourse until January. My queries are how accurate are the dates determined by an Ultrasound? Also my girlfriend does not eat very much, usually just one meal a day, could this affect the size of the foetus and throw of the scan date?

However, I'm writing in response to *kellielstl. A couple of weeks ago, I went to doc's to sign up and to get an appointment (had 2 +ve tests!). The lovely receptionise told me I can self-refer now and gave me the number for Midwife Direct. Might be worth giving them a bell? 0800 121 4400

However, am not sure if it's just for Manchester - so worth maybe checking out with your local triage/maternity unit?

Good luck everyone xx

Hi Casseroll. Just do a test! If it's negative you know and can get on with life. If it's positive, fantastic! If you're anything like me, once the ideas in your head you can't stop thinking about it, so get on and find out girly. Set your mind at rest one way or the other.

I had cramp like feelings for the first few weeks. Found it difficult to tell the difference between that and normal period pains and PMT to be honest. Still got sore boobs, although the cramping has stopped.

For the other lady who has done a couple of tests and they're negative, perhaps try using your first wee of the day. Providing you're using the test correctly they're very, very accurate so unlikely to give an incorrect result providing your period is late. If your period is really late and the test is still saying negative, it's time for a trip to the GP for a chat I would say.

Hope this helps. Good luck ladies.

Hey. I'm another person who found out on Valentines day! Had been feeling rough with a nasty cold which didn't want to go. Had been taking a cocktail of meds to help with it.....oops. NHS direct were really through and reassuring on that account. Thought I would do a test just to get the idea out of my head that I might be pregnant. Burst in to tears when the +'ve appeared on the test. We'd been trying for over a year and I'd begun to give up on the idea. Still don't really believe it. Have first midwife appointment next week. Don't think i'll really think it's real until I have the first scan......must be some mistake! GP was lovely, not much to say though really at this stage....'don't eat this, take that, we'll get you a midwife appointment, let us know immeadiately if there's any bleeding'.... Fingers crossed it's not some terrible mistake. Good luck all other valentines babies!

I also found out I was pregnant on Valentines day. I did a home pregnancy test. When I went to my doctor I was surprised to discover she felt no need to do a retest to confirm and simply said I believe you. Last Thursday I woke up to discover I was bleeding old blood (dark brown as though your finishing your period). It was not in line with my period dates so it was quite scary. I planned not to tell my mum but found that I had to because I was so confused and scared. I went to the early pregnancy unit at hospital and had a scan. Bleeding is a possible sign of miscarriage. Old blood is not so bad but new red blood is not a good sign. Stomach pains is also a bad sign but luckily i did not have this problem. When I had the scan they found a heart beat but the baby is a little smaller than expected so I have been called back for another scan in 2 weeks to confirm the baby is developing fine. Wish me luck!

Hi, Just reading some of your comments. I also found out i was pregnant on valentines day. I phoned my doctors and the receptionist told me to make an appointment which i did. I had heard that i didn't need to see the doctor just ask for a referal to the midwife, so i phoned back. Got another receptionist who told me that this was true and to bring a sample in, i asked if i could do that straight away and i gave them one within the following 10 minutes. I returned 2 day's later without an appointment and the receptionist told me it was positive, told me a rough due date and booked my midwife appointment there and then. therefore to kellilsti comment on the 21st call your GP's back and ask to do the same. This is obviously my first pregnancy and although we planned it and extremly excited, i do keep getting anxious thoughts - i'm sure you know the type i've been told it's normal. Fingers crossed for the midwife on the 28th March!

However not sure about an issue that's cropped up, had some bleeding beginning of the week and found some teeny weeny clots in amongst the blood. Been told by my doctor it's too early for a miscarriage and I should wait a week to see what happens gut partner and I are in complete limbo. Good news is that the bleeding hasn't gotten any heavier and my period pains have disappeared but not sure if that's a good sign as i've had pain throughout. Any ideas peeps?

I do think its bad that the calculator on the NHS website adjusts for the number of days of your cycle, yet the NHS midwifes have to use a standard 40 weeks with no adjustment (unless you have a dating scan)- a distinct lack of consistency across the departments

For an NHS website, this pregnancy planner section is not very good. Some sections are OK, but others need to be improved. For example, there should be a way to simply 'Change your due date' without having to go off lasy period date. This is because women will get a more precise due date at their 12 week, and/or 20 week scan.

Similarly, when I miscarried twice this year, there was no way to tell the site that I'd miscarried other than to delete my account. It's an upsetting time as it is.

Pregnancy websites which do both of the above and I'd highly recommend:

http://www.whattoexpect.com
http://www.babycentre.co.uk/

Come on NHS - improve this website!!

squirreltz said on 11 June 2009

The reason for that is very few people actually know the date they conceived. We were lucky, as circumstances at the time narrowed it down to one event - so to speak. But it could still be up to 5 days later than that, as sperm can live that long inside the female's body.

By using the date of your last normal period, it means everyone can use the same scale. Think how confusing it would be if someone said they were 10 weeks pregnant (gestationally) but another lady at the same stage said 12 weeks as she was using the last normal period. Both women would be expecting their babies around the same time, which is actually all we need to know. That's why people tend to use the period date, makes it easier for everyone.

And since only about 3 in 10 babies are actually born on their due date, I don't think that 2 weeks matters too much. A first baby tends to stay in longer anyway. Only baby knows!

From what i have been advsied, you need to know the date of you last period. The date you actually started your period not the day you finished. It seems a bit strange because you may only get pregnant in the middle of that month so you are two wks out straight away. But i just went of what the NHS site said and the nurse.
