Vasectomy - Stephen's story

'Vasectomy was a sensible choice of contraception for us'

Picture of Stephen Belfield

Stephen Belfield, a graphic designer from Chiswick in west London, had a vasectomy in 1995. He lives with his wife, Anita, 45, and their two children Luke, 17 and Jessica, 14

“After Jessica was born, I felt that with a boy and a girl, our family was complete. Shortly after her birth, I discussed having a vasectomy with Anita. She wanted time to think it over, so it wasn’t until 18 months later that I went ahead with it. By then, we were both 100% sure we didn’t want more children.

“We decided we would concentrate on giving our two beautiful children the best life we possibly could. For us there were other things to consider, such as the size of our home, and the fact that we both feel strongly that the world is becoming over-populated.

“I thought vasectomy was a sensible choice of contraception for us. It's a fast operation, which doesn’t really hurt, and it has been tried and tested by thousands of men.

“If I didn’t have a vasectomy, the contraceptive choices available didn't really appeal. Either Anita took care of it by going on the Pill or having a coil fitted, or we would have to use condoms, which ruined spontaneity. If Anita was the one to be sterilised, it would have meant a major operation, which isn’t always successful.

"I was a bit uneasy just before the operation, but only with regard to how much it would hurt. I was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t really hurt at all because of the local anaesthetic. All I felt was some tugging. I did have some bruising afterwards, but within a few days it was gone.

"I never worried that the operation would affect my sex drive, as I did lots of reading on the topic beforehand. I also got advice from the doctor at Marie Stopes, the clinic where it was carried out.

"If anything, I would say having 'the snip' has benefited my sex life, as we have absolutely no worries about pregnancy now. The 10 minutes of minor discomfort I had while my vasectomy was being carried out was well worth it. Like most men, I’ve had no side effects or complications since the operation.”

Listening to people like the person above has left me in constant pain and regretting having had it done more than I could possibly say.
You just ca`nt go back when you`ve had this.Once a man has been damaged with some of his most
precious goods it`s to late.
How do you know if you are are going to have life long pain?
Look up Vastectomy Pains on the net and save yourself life long pain by not having the snip.

I find what has been said above to be nothing like what I have experianced. I have had constant pains and found beeing "cut off" awful. My testicles do not get protected like before, when if in danger my scotrum would have shriveled to safe guard them from getting trapped. Now they get trapped and then I get further pain because of that. I have not been able to sit in an easy chair since my op. because of constant pain on the body side of my cut. This is awful but just pain after more pain and this has gone on for nearly thirty years.

Had my vasectomy 2 months ago and must say I've no regrets at all. With the local anesthetic I would describe the procedure, in terms of pain and discomfort, as being very similar to having a tooth extracted - not horrendous but not pleasant either.

I didn't suffer any swelling, just some bruising which disappeared after a week. I did take the advice of the consultant and basically stayed in bed for two days and for the month after used my 'tight' m&s pants!

I've had no residual pain or change in sex drive, so would definitely recommend the procedure.

I chose to have a vasectomy after the birth of our third child. I am in a stable relationship, and my wife and I both thought a vasectomy was the best choice for future contraception.

My experience has been 100% positive, and I wanted to report this to give some balance to the negative comments, which I am sure are true and I am very sorry for any blokes that have suffered after the op. However for me, the procedure was painless, I was back at work two hours later, has minor discomfort over the next day or two but ibuprofen was enough to deal with that.

My GP referred me to a "no scalpel, no needle" practiotioner and the keyhole procedure was great - very quick, no stitches, and no bleeding afterwards - just some bruising which faded after a few days.

Four months on from the op, sex is the same as it always has been, and I don't have the nagging worry that we may fall pregnant again.

So to anyone considering it, do your research and realise that there are risks, including a risk of persisent pain after the op. Any surgery has the risk of complications. But for me, it was a painless, convenient, and overall incredibly worthwhile procedure - and all free on the NHS.

I find the comments above most unhelpful as I have had a" sawn-off "feeling ever since I was pushed into this op.Lads just do`nt let anyone persuade you into something that you ca`nt go back to.Some men are it seems OK after but how do you know that you are not going to be one of the many vasectomy sufferer's. Sex for me has also been spoilt as I get a sharp sort of pain when I climax. No medical help has been any use for me either.

The main story above seems 'too good to be true' and a little scripted.
I had the Op and found it very uncomfortable and acutely painful at times - not an experience that is easy or one that 'you could sleep through' as has been described on similar web sites. Not something I would buy as a 'Red Letter' day or wish to repeat again!
Afterwards though the symptoms have been minor; aches and swelling the only discomfort and now that the Op's out of the way it was worth the discomfort for the result.
I spent quite a bit of time researching the procedure and possible complications, which my surgeon put at a one in six risk ratio. Not many people write reviews to say things went 'well' or 'average' so thought I'd balance the above views out a bit.

My husband has suffered so much since we made the awful mistake of listening to rubbish like the comments above. In my opinion vasectomies are advised to provide jobs for the people who give or sell them.

Having a vasectomy was the most stupid thing i`ve ever done.I was told that this procedure was nothing much, how wrong that was,Ever since i`ve been in constant pain and sex is about half what it was before. No doctor has been able to help me, antibiotics, pain killers, nothing has helped.
I have been so embarrassed with this problem, I am pleased to be able on this wonderful NHS site, to at least warn others that this op. dose go wrong. I also suspect that because of the sensertive nature of the snip, many other men like me have been reluctant to come forward and tell.
