Vasectomy - Expert view

Family planning expert Toni Belfield on the questions to ask

Toni Belfield

'Vasectomy has no effect on sex drive or the enjoyment of sex'

Ask your consultant

  • What risks and complications are associated with vasectomy?
  • What type of training and experience do you have in this type of surgery?
  • Where will the operation be done?
  • What kind of anaesthetic will I have?
  • How long will it take me to recover and what can I expect during recovery?
  • Can I expect any sexual problems?
  • What type of operation do you recommend?
  • Will the operation affect me psychologically?
  • Is there any alternative?

Toni Belfield, former director of the FPA (formerly the Family Planning Association), suggests some of the questions that you might want to discuss with your surgeon.

Will a vasectomy affect my sex life?

Many men worry about this procedure changing their sex life, but extensive research over many years has found that a vasectomy has no effect on sex drive or the enjoyment of sex. It will also have no effect on your erections or your ability to ejaculate.

Physically, what difference will it make?

The only difference is that sperm, which will still be made in the testes, will be unable to reach its destination because the tube has been cut. The sperm are reabsorbed by your body with no ill effects – the same as they would be if you didn’t have sex or ejaculate for a long time.

Can I still ejaculate when I orgasm?

In terms of volume, sperm makes up only a small fraction of semen, so you will not notice a decrease in the amount of semen you ejaculate.

The last words in my comments should have said "ruined the quality of my life"
What a awful opperation to have with so many problems if it go`s wrong, which for far to many is not acceptable.

Further to my last comments, the final wording should have read " This procedure has ruined the quality of my life"
I would also like to add that awful "cut off" feeling has been for me unacceptable . If the testicles are in danger of getting trapped ,before vasectomy they naturely are protected by the scotrum shriveling up tight. This has not been the same since, hence it is very easy to trap the testicles with further pains. After my opperation I was not able to sit in an easy chair for more than five minutes at any time due to pressures to the body side of my cut and this is still the same after nearly thirty years.
What an awful opperation this has been for me.
Having a vasectomy just cannot be worth not using a condom alongside your partners contraceptive to make sure, if a risk of pregnancy is not acceptable.

I have just had so much trouble with my vasectomy if I were asked to compare say condoms with the snip then I would give condoms 99 out of a hundred to 3 out of a hundred for vasectomy.
If you want discomort, pains,a sort of cut off feeling, your testicles often trapped and reduced sexual pleasure then take notice of the lady above

The expert is wrong when she says that having a vasectomy does not effect sex drive or the enjoyment of sex. I had a vasectomy 2 years ago and although the initial operation seemed to go well I began to suffer a pain in my balls which began as a dull ache. This has moved into periods of pain especially during and after sex. This has dampened my enjoyment of sex and I am less interested in sex because there is a risk of increased pain.

What a pity the "expert" is so very wrong, my vasectomy was all that is not described above. This op. is so very degrading particularly for those of us who have continuous pain and discomfort ever after. There are just so many better alternative ways than this horrible procedure.

Vasectomy can and does have an effect on sex life. I had a vasectomy 19 months ago and still have intermittent pain which interferes with sex as well as day to day activities. It was only after I had undergone a snip that I found out that long term pain is common. The more men i know who have undergone the snip the more I find had and have long term pain. There are many studies showing the risks of long term pain which the expert view has not taken in to account. Make sure you do your own research.

I just wonder how Toni Belfield had her vasectomy? Her comments are so very wrong, many men suffer pain and discomfort for ever. Type "vasectomy pain" on the web and read about pains that so many men have suffered.I have regretted having my op. more than I could discribe, which was the worst decision of my life.
