Lifestyle changes

Avoid triggers, such as cold wind, and wear sunscreen

  • Can prevent mild flushing, visible blood vessels and thickened skin
  • Not always practical or easy
  • May not prevent moderate or severe symptoms 
Antibiotic gel or cream

Topical (rub-on) metronidazole reduces inflammation and kills bacteria

  • Effective for mild to moderate spots
  • Less irritation to the skin than azelaic acid
  • Suitable for sensitive skin
  • Required for several months
  • You need to avoid strong sunlight and UV light
Azelaic acid gel

Azelaic acid unblocks pores and kills bacteria

  • Effective for mild to moderate spots
  • Does not make skin sensitive to sunlight
  • May be more effective than metronidazole
  • Symptoms take a month to improve
  • Can cause mild burning, stinging, dryness and itchiness of the skin
Antibiotic medicines

Tetracycline or erythromycin tablets or capsules reduce inflammation

  • Effective for moderate to severe spots
  • Useful if affected area is widespread and creams are difficult to use
  • Effective for eye symptoms
  • Required for several months
  • Makes contraceptive pill less effective, so alternative contraception should be used
  • Can cause sickness, diarrhoea and mild stomach pains
Vitamin A medicine

Isotretinoin, taken in capsules or tablets, is derived from vitamin A and is very powerful

  • Effective in treating severe acne caused by rosacea
  • Can be prescribed only by a dermatologist
  • High risk of causing serious birth defects, so women must use reliable contraception
  • Can cause inflammation and dryness of lips, nosebleeds, headaches, inflammation of the eyelids and eyes, skin rashes, muscle, joint and bone pain, blood in urine, easy bruising and bleeding
Lasers

Aimed at the blood vessels to shrink them

  • Effective for shrinking visible vessels on the face
  • Side effects are mild and last only a few days
  • Can cause bruising, swelling, redness or blisters
  • May be painful
  • You may need to avoid sun for few weeks before and after treatment
  • Not available on the NHS in many areas of the country
Camouflage make-up

Covers up redness and marks on the skin

  • Can improve confidence and prevent embarrassment
  • You need to learn how to apply it
  • Does not cure symptoms
Surgery

Surgery to reshape the nose

  • Effective for thickened skin (rhinophyma) on the nose
  • Only for severe cases
  • May not be available on NHS
