Periods

Introduction

Watch this...

This 3D animation explains how the menstrual cycle works

A period is a bleed from the uterus (womb) that is released through the vagina. It happens approximately every 28 days, although anywhere between 24 and 35 days is common. A period is part of a woman's menstrual cycle.

It is possible for your periods to begin between the ages of eight and 16 years, but they most commonly start around the age of 12. Your periods will continue until the menopause, which usually occurs between 45 and 55 years of age.

As a baby girl, you are born with all your eggs stored in follicles (sacs) in your ovaries. As puberty begins, your body starts to produce hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone, which cause your eggs to mature. This is the beginning of your first menstrual cycle.

Having periods is part of the female reproductive cycle. The cycle begins on the first day of bleeding and continues up to, but not including, the first day of the next period.

Different amounts of each of the female hormones are produced by your body at different times during your cycle. As a result, lots of bodily changes occur throughout your cycle. For example, you may develop swollen breasts, and/or have mood changes. Your basal body temperature (your temperature first thing in the morning) will also change depending on which point you are at in your cycle.

Hi, I really need some serious advice. I'm 18 and for the past 3months ive been on my period constantly. They are sometimes heavy or light. I don't want to visit my doctor because I really don't like to speak about things like this to someone I don't no face to face. I'm a virgin so it can't be anything to do with sex. I'm currently with someone though and having to put off sex all the time due to this is becoming a HUGE problem. I'm really worried there is something wrong so please can anyone reply.
Thanks.

TO JESSIE
Firstly, what an eloquent comment!
Re: advice on inserting a tampon, I had great difficulty with this too during the early years of my period.
You already know to relax, great start.
It can be easier to insert if you stand with one leg on the floor, with the other foot and leg on the toilet seat. Sounds funny but it can help!
My other piece of advice is try using a vaginal lubricant, such as KY Jelly. I know it might be embarrassing to buy, but it definitely helps. Discuss this option with your mum- you don't want to worry her that you're having sex too early, it's just to help with tampons.
As for everyone else who is still waiting for their period to start and worrying- DON'T! I miss the days when I was pain-free and didn't get bloated and depressed because of my periods (I get very heavy ones)! It can hurt, make your breasts uncomfortably swollen (it hurts to take my bra off during this time because they're so heavy and tender) amongst other things- just enjoy being yourself- adulthood comes quickly and it doesn't go away! It doesn't make you any less female or grown-up/mature if your period hasn't started and other girls have. It just means you save yourself some soreness and you can spend the money that you would have spent on sanitary towels/tampons on something nicer!
Hope this helps. xxx

To almaaa,
Hi My name is Jessie and i'm 14, i have only just started my periods this year. I used to stress and stress over it, and i was so worried that i would never start. But actually you need not worry if you havn't started your periods till you are arounf 16. And then you should visit your doctor. my mum started her periods when she was 14, knowing that made me feel better before i started, and at the moment my periods are very irregular, i have one in april then one in july and then one in september that has just ended! I think you should ask you mum when she started, and it will probably be around 14! That really made me feel better to find out! And recently I got an amusing leaflet about periods which i passed arround my class and we all had a good laugh, then when we talked about it (this was year 9) i descovered that only about 75% of the class had started, that surprised me cos i thought everyone whould have! But I think you should just not worry about it! Because when you get your periods its a relief but actually you might get period pains (i didn't till my third period and my mum gets them all the time) but even if you dont you have to buy all the stuff, then change them reguarly, which is annoying at school, then you have heavy flow at some times in the period (i have it on the second day of 'flowing'). Then yuo cant swim unless you wear a tampon, (and tampons are quite easy to put in (if you relax, tensing muscles makes it impossable) but can be uncomfortable if they are not in properly and i can never seem to get them in far enough!
So please dont worry about them, because they are not that bad, but they are not that good, just wait till you get them and dont try and bring them on, they start when your hight and wieght even out (fat people start earlyer than skinny people who start later). But dont put on weight just to start, there is no need!
If anyone has any advice about putting in tampon i will check this page regularly!
Love Jessie xxx
