'Don’t rule out HRT. It actually protects against osteoporosis and bowel cancer'

We asked GP Dr Dawn Harper what she would want to know if she was going through menopause.

What can I do to minimise the symptoms of menopause?

Try looking at your diet. Menopausal symptoms are almost unheard of in Japan, where they eat a diet rich in soya. You should also make sure you're eating enough calcium in your diet to maintain healthy bones. Eat plenty of low-fat dairy products, leafy green vegetables, seeds and nuts.

How can I stop getting hot flushes?

Think about what you drink. Alcohol and caffeine can make hot flushes worse. Limit your alcohol to one to two units per day, and try decaffeinated coffee and tea. Some women find that drinking any hot drink triggers a flush. If that’s you, stick to cold drinks. You should also increase your exercise. Weight bearing exercise will keep your bones strong, and exercise will help keep your flushes and mood swings at bay.

My doctor has suggested HRT but I am worried about the risks.

Don’t rule out HRT. Yes, taking HRT can increase the risk of breast cancer, heart disease and stroke, but the risks are small – much smaller than the media would have us believe. And it’s not all bad. HRT actually protects against osteoporosis and bowel cancer.

What are these?

Help - I know that I am going through the menopause - irregular periods, night sweats, feelings of depression for no reason, being very short tempered and irritable. When I have to visit the doctor. It seems that they are not really bothered so I now do not know where to turn. I can cope with most of the symptoms but I am waiting for someone to say something at work with regards to my temper (I am the only woman in a male environment) Any ideas what to do?
