Hip replacement - Expert view

Orthopaedic expert Mr Andrew Hamer on the questions to ask

Hip replacement

More than 62,000 hip replacements are done each year in the UK. Orthopaedic expert Andrew Hamer suggests the questions you might like to ask your surgeon.

Ask your surgeon

  • How often do you do this operation?
  • What is the infection rate? (It should be less than 1%.)
  • How long will my new hip last? (You should not need a revision in the first 10-15 years.)
  • What is the risk of dislocation? (It should be less than 5%.)

We asked Mr Andrew Hamer, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, what he would want to know if he was having a hip replacement.

Can any surgeon perform this operation?

Hip replacement is major surgery. Choose a skilled surgeon who is experienced in performing the operation.

What do I need to know to make this decision?

Make sure you fully understand all the benefits and risks of the operation for you personally.

Can I do anything to help my recovery?

Get as fit as you can before the operation by losing weight if you need to, stopping smoking and getting any infections treated.

How will I cope after the operation?

Make arrangements to have your support system in place for when you come out of hospital.

Will my hip joint last forever?

Your new hip won't last forever and will wear in time. It's important to look after your hip joint after the operation.
