Head lice - Prevention

Preventing head lice

A head lice infestation cannot be easily prevented. Regular detection combing – for example, on a weekly basis, is the best way to find new lice quickly.

See Head lice - diagnosis for information and advice about detection combing.

Medicated lotions and sprays are not effective in preventing head lice infestations. They should only be used if a live louse has been found on your or your child’s head.

See Head lice - treatment for more information about medicated head lice lotions and sprays.

National bug busting days

National bug busting days are educational days that many schools across the country take part in.

The aim of these sessions is to inform children and their parents about the behaviour of head lice and how to detect and remove them. Co-ordinating bug busting days across the country can help to prevent head lice circulating.

There are three designated bug busting days each year:

  • January 31
  • June 15
  • October 31

See the Community Hygiene Concern website for more information about bug busting for schools.
