Causes of genital warts

Teenagers and contraception

Find out what teenagers think about contraception and get tips on contraception options available and how to use a condom.

Genital warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV targets a type of tissue that is known as epithelial tissue, which is found on the skin, and on the lining of many of the body’s cavities, such as:

  • the female genitalia, including the vagina, vulva and cervix
  • the anus
  • the mouth

In many cases, HPV does not cause any noticeable symptoms, so many people can be infected with HPV without realising it.

The most common way that HPV can be passed from person to person is during sexual intercourse.

Other forms of sexual activity where HPV can be passed from person to person include:

  • oral sex
  • anal sex
  • non-penetrative genital to genital contact

Less commonly, a mother can pass HPV on to her newborn baby during birth.

Other possible causes

It has been suggested that it may theoretically be possible to pass on HPV by a person with an HPV infection on their hands touching their own or somebody else’s genitals.

Alternatively, infection could be spread by coming into contact with an object that has been contaminated by HPV, such as bedding or towels.

However, both of these suggestions remain unproven.

I am a pensioner who met someone over a year ago and we became partners. I noticed just before xmas a lump as I thought, I visited my nurse practitioner she reffered me to the GUM clinic. They tested me for everything and all came back clear but they sent me to the gyacology dept where I had a biopsy in late Feb. While I have been waiting for the result to come back I now know for definate I have genital warts and have purchased treatment on line. My partner has no signs of warts could it be possible that he was /is carrying the virus due to him haveing diabetes? I have not sept with anyone for 10 years until i met my partner why has it taken over a year to appear?

My bf found some what looked like scaring on himself he had had it for atleast 2 months.. Just to be safe I went to the gum clinic to get checked.. I got the all clear for everything including warts.. then received the all clear for everything I was tested for but on the same day I received the text my bf went to the clinic and was told that he had warts.. Apparently they told him that we created the virus together (neither of us cheated) and that I was just lucky that I didnt get it.. We always had unprotected sex after I had the implant put in so why have I not got them? Could it be possible that they missed something? Should I go get myself checked again? Im getting worried as Ive never had any sti and know that it may cause cervical cancer.. Is it possible that I am actually just immune to the infection?
