Tomatoes

1. Open
remember tinned fruit and vegetables also count towards your 5 A DAY and can make a cheaper and easy cupboard staple. Use tinned tomatoes to make pasta sauces.
2. Snack
baby cherry tomatoes make a sweet, yummy snack. Try with chopped celery or cucumber for an extra portion of their 5 A DAY.
3. Add
most kids like tomato based pasta sauces, but there are lots of other places you can pop them in, like cottage pie, spag bol and stews.
4. Layer
tomatoes look great when you layer with other brightly coloured veg. Try making a layered tomato, grated carrot salad and cucumber ‘traffic light’ salad.
5. Drink
on its own or try it with some carrot juice.
6. Chop
and make your own fresh tomato salsa as an alternative to ketchup. Delicious as a dip with toasted pitta bread, in sandwiches or on top of grilled fish or chicken.
7. Bake
take a large tomato, slice the top off and scoop put the middle, bake at 200ºC or gas mark 5 for 25 minutes then fill with cooked rice, sprinkle with a small amount of grated half fat cheese and grill for a few minutes until the cheese bubbles.
