In-work benefits

If you return to work after you've been on benefits or tax credits, you must inform the office that pays you the benefits of this change of circumstances. You must inform each office that pays you a benefit. These may be different offices. You may still be entitled to the benefit you were receiving, but the amount you are entitled to may change. See the sections on the benefits you claim for information on how to notify a change of circumstances (see NHS Choices links).

Working less than 16 hours a week

If you start working for less than 16 hours a week and have a low income you may still be entitled to some Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, or income-related Employment and Support Allowance.

You may also still be entitled to a Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit.

If you have children you will probably still be entitled to Child Tax Credit.

Working more than 16 hours a week

If you're working 16 hours a week or more, you can claim Working Tax Credit.

You may also still be entitled to some Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit. See NHS Choices links for more information on both of these benefits.

If you have children you will probably still be entitled to Child Tax Credit.

If you're about to return to work, read the page on back-to-work benefits, explaining the financial support you can get when starting work.

There is a range of practical ways that Jobcentre Plus can help you to get back to work and support you once you're in work, such as equipment and adaptations at work.

Use the interactive tool below to see what benefits you might consider claiming.
